Grandfather is giving me his old astra 300 9mm short.
Anyone have tips for upkeep (he is 85 and I feel hasn't cleaned it in a decade) and any other details I should know?

neat, I love Astras, oil it up and run a brush through the barrel

I've only fired it a couple times, but it feels great. The magazine that he got it with has a pretty weak spring, do you or anyone else have a good couple spots I might keep an eye open for a replacement?

dig around gunbroker, they turn up probably
don't mess with ANY of the screws until you get a proper gunsmith kit with the proper sized bits
they WILL strip/chip easily

Modern gun cleaners consist of harsh solvents. I would use baking soda to clean it.

are the mags interchangeable with astra 400s? you can get new springs at wolff

Nah I don't believe so, from what I understand the 400 is a smaller version of the 400... I am not certain by any means but I believe they arent

Should I be making g a solution, or use the grit and wash it off?

It could be like how the commander 1911 is a smaller version of the 1911 and the mags are interchangeable, but since I've no experience with the astras I couldn't say.
It would depend on the caliber as well ofc.

I will cerainly be looking at that, that would make it easier to be sure
