Hey lads,
Looking for good options for a first rifle.
To my dismay, 303's are actually almost always as expensive or more expensive than a factory new rifle (upwards of $1000 for a decent condition 303, $1500 for a great condition one).
I've seen a few Mosin Nagants (91/30, a 91, and a 44) all between $450 and $750, but ammunition is uncommon and quite pricey ($1.20/round).
I'm really not sure what I want, but I know it's not a .22.
Any suggestions? Trying to keep the budget at $1500 or less (including scope + scope rings if necessary).

What do you want to shoot - bunnies, porkers, sambar or just paper?
Have a rummage on (ab)usedguns.com.au until you get some ideas, then go looking at your LocalGunShop
>nuggets are a yank poorfag meme from when they were cheap junkers, you can get a decent sporter for the same cash in a better and more available calibre

Probably 95% range targets.
I'd like to hunt with it, probably anything fox sized or smaller. I think .223 could be decent for that.
I've looked at Howa 1500, and Howa 1500 mini action (though the 1500 seems more available and cheaper).
That's around $600 for a barreled action with stock.
I was thinking another $150 for a bipod, $80 for scope rings, $50 for flip lense covers, and then $250ish for a scope?

Why can't this just be murica where I can just get a $750 AR15 or $200 Mosin Nagant

You can get a Lee-Enfield in sound shootable condition for about $500. 7.62x54r and .303 are identically priced.

Get a 223. You can pick up ammo in Melbourne for as cheap as 50c a round. Howas are from what I've heard really good for the price, I'm picking up my Mini Action 223 Ultra Light on Thursday. I paid $519 from Cleaver Firearms (they're shits to deal with tho), they have them for $500 flat now.

223 is perfect for foxes, and is also a (more expensive) way to blow up rabbits and hare.

Your prices estimates are pretty dead-on. Don't really -need- flip-up caps per se, but if you want to be tacticool why not

I'd avoid any milsurp stuff for a first gun.

Ammo is too expensive and most have headspacing problems from decades of use. I would only go for one which had been properly checked over by a gunsmith (and not some cunt behind the counter who says its okay)

I would go for a .223 if you want a centrefire. Fuck paying 150 for a bipod. Get a cheap shit chinese knock off from ebay for 20 bucks if you are mainly going to the range and shooting off a bench. It will do the same job. Spend more on the scope.

If you want a 223 then tikka T3's are very popular and for good reason.

Seriously consider the benefits of a 22 (my first was a 270 win which I don't regret but three years and five guns on I'm getting a 22) especially if money is a concern.

Consider 243 if you're into the bigger stuff as it would be in the real of one gun that can do it all (but I strongly believe in owning as many guns as you can).

Get a quality .22lr.

Some places do packages with gun and scope. You can pick up a Savage or Ruger with scope in your price range.

.22 is a great gun to start off with. Ammo is cheap as shit and you can spend a whole day shooting the fuck out it without going broke.

Blame Martin Bryant for thinking that going Rambo on some inbred Tassies would be a fun idea and blame the pollies for introducing regulations for regulations sake just to try and deter anyone from going through all the hoops to get one shitty bolt action rifle because they don't have the guts to just come out and say that they dream of the complete abolition of non-commercial firearm ownership.
