M1917 Bolt Won't Cycle When Empty. Is This Normal?

Bought 1917 Eddystone enfield for $650 at a gun show in Denver two days ago. Just got it back home to take a look at it. As the seller said, it's in great condition. Wood has some rough ups on it, but the bore looks great. He said he's never fired it, that it just sat in his closet because he had four others.

Only thing I've come across, is that it doesn't cycle when empty. I don't have any rounds to test it with because this is my first 30-06 rifle I've bought. But is that normal for the M1917 to not cycle on empty? However when I push the feeding platform down a bit, it will fully cycle. I've never had or seen a bolt action do that, so this just might be some design thing I've never heard of before.
>>
>>32379493
Some old bolts do that. The feed ramp gets caught on the bolt. My mauser and mosin do this. My enfield and 1903 don't though. Just push down on it and close the bolt.
>>
>>32379493
Yes, m1917, mauser, 1903 all had followers that would hold bolts open.
>>
>>32379493
Yes that's normal. The following blocks the bolt. A lot of rifles from that era have the same feature.
>>
>>32379521
The Mosin does not have that. You don't own a Mosin clearly
>>
>>32379548
Considering the follower is bent which causes this. Yeah.
>>
>>32379493
Made that way. It blocks the bolt and allows you to insert a stripper clip of ammunition to reload it.
>>
>>32379561
What?

The Mosin doesn't have a bolt stop follower. You are wrong
>>
>>32379561
It's bent, which is not normal. The action on the Mosin is typically not a problem to dry cycle.

OP, as stated by others...

they fuckin do that
so do 1903s, most of the pre-ww1 mausers, and a few other guns
>>
>>32379521
>>32379537
My K98, Mosin, and Lee MkIII don't do that so it kinda struck me as odd.

Thanks guys.
>>
>>32379578
The top of the spring in the magazine that acts as a follower is bent in mine because that's what happens when you let idiots play with it. It being bent up causes it to catch the bolt.
>>
>>32379619
How the fuck do you bed the leaf spring on a Mosin magazine? It's not something you normally disassemble. Kys
>>
>>32379631
>letting noguns play with your shit
I think they bent it up wedging something in there and prying up. Plus a replacement spring is like $5. If I shot the garbage rod more than once a year Id care, but until then I don't. Good job keeping the trend of all trips being retarded alive though. Please kys yourself at the next opportune moment.

Also, top of the spring that acts as a follower? What the fuck you're an idiot
>>32379677
Lol no you're just retarded. Stay mad faggit.
>Mosin
>garbage
Kek try again
>>
>>32379725
So the top of the spring does not put pressure against the bullets to push them up into the path of the bolt? Huh, neat.
>>
>>32379493
Mag cut off. Maybe you shouldn't own a gun...
http://www.odcmp.org/503/rifle.pdf
>>
>>32379743
The spring isn't the follower dumbass
>>
>>32379765
I never said it was, it acts as the follower.
>>
>>32379818
That's still wrong
>magazine spring
>follower
Two different parts you fucking retard
>>
>>32379864
Then what does the top part of the spring do? Does it not follow the rounds up pushing them into the path of the bolt there by acting as the follower?
>>
>>32379894
No it doesn't act as the follower. Are you completely fucking retarded? They are two different parts. Pushing the follower isn't being the follower. What the fuck, and for that matter and that you think the follower is a spring, how the fuck did that get bent it's not exactly flimsy
>>
>>32379931
How did you figure I meant the follower to be a spring? Damn you're retarded. The top of the spring acts as in "behaves as" the follower without actually being one. And fuck if I know how, I lent it to my cousin to learn the basics and got it back bent.
>>
>>32379969
You're saying the spring acts as the follower. That's why it sounds like you mean the spring is the follower. Either way you're still wrong. If that were the case there wouldn't be a need for a follower. You're talking about the magazine spring. So which is bent the magazine spring or the follower. Either way I'm not sure how it is now acting as a bolt stop. Are you sure you're not just making shit up now
>>
>>32379677
>Claims mosins have a bolt hold open
>Is actually broken
>Can't be assed to get $5
>Lol faggot trips

You give trips a good name anon..
>>
>>32380033
>x is acting as y
>acting
>that must mean x is without a doubt y!
Jesus.
>magazine spring
Holy fuck what else pushes the bullets into the path of the bolt?
>follower
Mosins don't have followers ;D
And yes the little rectangular plat that tops the magazine spring, you know the one that makes contact with the bullets and follows them up is bent up causing it to catch the bolt.
>>
>>32380085
What? I'm not the one with the broken/bent part.
>>
>>32380085
I never said mosins have bolt hold opens, I said mine does because it was broken. Reading is a useful skill.
>>
>>32380095
>Mosins don't have followers
The part you immediately refer to after saying this is the follower. You're completely idiotic

And i didn't quote you did i? Dont make me take back that trip fag compliment you dummy
>>
>>32380116
>mosins don't have followers
Have you not been saying that in every one of your posts? I'm impressed, you truly are committed to having a trip.
>>
>>32380119
No I see now. At first I looked like it was directed at me. S-sorry anon
>>
>>32380143
What? You just said that they don't have followers. They do. You're the one that said they don't. What in the fuck am I talking to retard doesn't cover it anymore... so I seriously need to go get all 4 of my Mosins mag springs, followers and floor plates for your retarded fucking ass?
>>
>>32380179
You were the one that said mosins don't have followers. I'd say you were a retarded trip but then I'd just be repeating myself.
>>
>>32379587
K98 followers also prevent dry cycling.
>>
>>32380204
Nigger what? You've been saying this whole time that the spring "acts as the follower" which is completely fucking wrong. I've asserted that because the magazine spring pushes on the follower doesn't make it the follower or make it "act as the follower" I clearly asserted to you that they are completely different parts.
>>32379864
In fact here is the post I told you so. I never said Mosins don't have followers, again I asked if it was the magazine spring or the follower that got bent as the follower "isn't exactly flimsy" I think I said. No wait I'll quote that too
>>32379931
Kys
>>
>>32380242
After you said that it didn't have a follower. So I'm not going to keep saying follower to try to explain it to you so that every time you'd go "nuh uh doesn't have a follower" in true trip fashion. Christ, you can't be this dense naturally can you?
>>
>>32380254
Go ahead, quote where I said the Mosin doesn't have a follower. I will wait.

You are the biggest retard I've ever seen on /k/ and that is saying something
>>
>>32380285
Read it yourself retard.
>my mosin follower is bent stopping the bolt
To which you immediately said
>nuh uh doesn't have a follower
So instead of having you shit all over every time I said follower I decided to explain it without saying follower to not flare your autism. But hey, here we are 20 posts in and I have a handful of (You)s from a trip. I should feel so special.
>>
>>32380313
I'm not the one that said their follower is bent.... I... w-what?

What the fuck? I must be getting trolled....
>>
>>32380313
Ooooh now I see. You must just be completely retarded.

I said the Mosin doesn't have a "bolt stop follower" like say, a 1917, Arisaka, etc. I didn't say it "doesn't have a follower"
>>
>>32380353
not the guy you're replying to but damn nigga, you are autistic as fuck. are you actually just LMJ with a new name?

>in b4 who's LMJ
>>
>>32379493
As others have stated this is completely normal for this rifle.
If you dont want it to do that you can buy a modified follower on ebay, I don't suggest doing it to your own or at least get a replacement follower first. Second there is a piece that holds the follow down that they used in training, can also be bought on ebay but is pretty expensive.
I made a piece for it out of a thin brass sheet.

They are great rifles and I hope you enjoy yourd
>>
>>32379493
uhhh

you mean the follower is blocking the bolt?

push down on the follower of the magazine.

i assume that rifle doesn't have detachable magazines like most others, but yes it's still a magzine and it has a spring and a follower to push teh boolits up.
>>
>>32379521
>The feed ramp gets caught on the bolt. My mauser and mosin do this. My enfield and 1903 don't though.
You clearly asserted the Mosin had a bolt stop follower. It doesn't, not to mention "feed ramp" is also fucking wrong. in any case this was my original point of contention, that the Mosin doesn't have that feature.

followed by you being an idiot and saying "the spring acts as a follower"
>>
>>32380441
fuck outta here, name-boy
>>
>>32380384
>calling a guy out for being an idiot is autistic
Kay.

Nope, not that guy.
>>32380419
No the 1917 doesn't have detachable mags, its internal like the 03
>>32380450
Make me
>>
>>32380441
>>32380450
>being this massive of faggots
>>
>>32380475
using a trip is quintessentially autistic mr. tripfaggot

im glad you're not LMJ. your writing style reminds me of him.
>>
>>32379521
>>32379537
>>32379538

On my 1917, it looks as though someone decided to round down the back of the follower so that way you didn't have to press it down to close the bolt. I kinda like it, don't have to do the extra work to close the empty rifle.
>>
>>32380498
Okay
>>32380529
Does that cause feeding issues? You mean it's filed so then bolt goes over and doesn't catch?
>>
>>32380529
Fairly common modification done by hunters.
>>
>>32379589
K98s also do that. So, you don't own a K98.
>>
>>32380567
Mine doesn't do that. So I don't know what to tell you.
>>
>This OP
Holy fuck, is this what /k/ has become? A place for absolute noguns newfags who are so retarded they can't even look up an answer themselves? Faggots need to lurk and learn

>Some retarded fuddlord filed down the follower on my Remington M1917 so it doesn't bolt-stop.
Why in all of fuck?
>>
>>32379493
its a normal feature dude. its a war rifle not a fucking hunting rifle. they designed it that way so soldiers would know when they were empty and reload.

would kind of suck to think you were loaded when taking aim at a charging jerry, when you actually ran out of bullets 2 shots ago
>>
Similar problem only with a hk91 clone. About one in thirty times my ejector will not ride into the ramp but jam the bolt. Anyone know the issue or dealt with it?

This should clear some things up for you. You should try owning guns some day, it's a lot of fun.
