shotgun thread

there was that 870 vs. 500/590 post a couple days ago and the consensus seems to be that mossberg is better. after additional research, it looks like the 590 is just a better version of the 500.

i've found this model for sale right at $400 shipped

http://www.mossberg.com/product/590-9-shot-heat-shield-50645/

should I go with that or spring for the 590a1?

also general shotgun questions and posts ITT, let me know if there's something else I should consider
>>
The only advantage the 590a1 has is that it's heavier. Which makes it a bit more pleasant to shoot heavy loads but is also that much more weight to carry.

I just bought a new 500 for 240, super killer deal from my place of employment. No regrets as I dont imagine needing the heavy breacher barrel any time soon and this is going to be a bang around blow up pumpkins kinda gun anyway. I can't imagine the heavier barrel helping for really anything other than being ran over honestly.
>>
>>32376703
the "870 has quality control issues" is a meme and is spouted by mosshills who have buyers remorse and regret that they bought the 500 instead of the 590.
>>
>>32376703

yeah the 590 is basically for breaching doors...and its a bit heavier as well which sucks.

just get the 500

The 590 is not 'better' than the 500. It has a heavier barrel but you are then limited in the different number of barrels available.

Go 500, install a metal enhanced safety and Mossberg metal trigger housing and then use whatever barrel you want for whatever purpose you'll be using your shotgun.

>>32376820
i'll cross the 590a1 off the list, but the 20" 590 with the heat shield seems pretty nice compared to the 500 models. i guess i could get a 500 and just put one on

>>32376779
that's actually a bit concerning
does this actually happen or did the guy do something before to compromise the integrity of the gun?

>>32376809
I've heard it from a lot of people, not just /k/, that the freedom group acquisition really did lower the quality control

>>32376859
i thought it was the 590a1 with the heavier barrel?
>>
>>32376877
They both have a heavier barrel than the 500.

I bought my 500 and it came with an 18" and a 28" barrel. I put the metal enhanced safety on it, the metal trigger housing, and bought a vintage stock and forend and refinished it.

You aren't going to be able to use the 500 barrels with a 590.

My 500 came with the same heat shield. Bought it off of budsgunshop

fudd lore. ive never had this problem and i bought the a1 specifically because i wanted a weapon to throw around and not baby like my others.
>>
>>32376703
Or, you could save another $100 or so and get the Maverick 88. Aftermarket parts interchange with the 500 series.
>>
>>32377189
>poorfagerick 88
>>
>>32377265
Like the 500 series and 870 aren't already bottom of the barrel. They're pump shotguns. They are nothing fancy and not used for anything in particular. Spending more for the 500 name is pretty much a waste of $100 extra dollars.
>>
>>32377322
>bottom of the barrel
didn't realize I was talking to a holland and holland owner

>>32377678
I do have an original parker brothers. Let's face it, these are all cheap sporting goods store shotguns. They are all basically the same quality and reliability. It's not like the 870 is one from the 70's when they were much more then they are today and often came with the poly choke.

If you're not buying a shotgun for a purpose (hunting, trap, skeet, home defense) then you're just buying a utility gun and for $100 less you can get the Maverick 88 (which I do own, along with an 870)

$400 is a good price for a 590

in case you werent aware...
the A1 has parkerized steel parts, inside & out..
and has a heavy-walled barrel, & aluminum trigger-assembly housing..
action-wise the two guns are mechanically identical, so it just depends on whether you feel the A1s features are worth the extra buckerooos
>>
>>32376703
So go buy a Mossberg. You'll have the #2 gun in America.
>>
>>32376703

I did my research with shotguns, and I thought I was set on a mossberg. When I went to the gun store, I finger fucked a few different pump actions, and the 870 was by far the most comfortable and fitting for me. I haven't changed the extractor on it or done anything to it other than clean it so far. Took it out today and shot 75 rounds through it (cheap light target shells for clay shooting [low brass]) and didn't have a single problem with extracting even one of the shells.

The only thing I am concerned with is the possibility of it rusting, which just means that I get to clean it more often, shish I enjoy doing.

Just my personal opinion. The mossberg has a jangly loose feeling on the fore end, like it wasn't put together correctly. People say this is intentional, but I don't like it at all.

okay OP, you've been fed some misinformation.

The anons that are complaining about the weight are leaving on one very important thing: It's PARKERIZED. in case you're not familiar with that, it's a type of finish which is exceptionally better than the standard blued finish on the 500. Also, the heavier materials used on the barrel and trigger components wil llast longer. Plus, the heavier weight will take alot of the 12 ga kick away from the shots.

If you have the money then get the 590A1. It's used by the military for christs sake. The 500 is still a great shotgun, definitely better than an 870. But the 590A1 is definitely better than the 500.

Local shop just got a bunch of used police shotguns in, a whole bunch of 870s, 500s and Browning Model 12s in.
They all come in various fits and finishes, wood and polymer and all go for inbetween $200 for the wood 5+1 models and $270-$300 for the 590s and collapsible stock models.
I have no strong sway towards either but I do like the look of the wood finishes but the point is alot of these guns are BEAT looking but cycle reliably and have mostly what appear to be cosmetic blemishes.
Should I go ahead and grab one or hold out for something better?
>>
>>32380505
You have the potential to get a pretty good deal there, but really only if you buy one of the cheaper ones available. If you really want to get one, try to get one with the best mechanical condition at the least price, otherwise you'd be better off just buying normal used. Browning 12s aren't super common either, so it may be an opportunity to get one on the cheap.
>>
>>32377186
> i bought the a1 specifically because i wanted a weapon to throw around

I can all but guarantee that you baby that shotgun lmao. You're so in denial it's not even funny.
>>
>>32380590
Get what feels the best for you, all three designs are top tier *if* they are mechanically sound and haven't been abused. The Browning model 12 is (almost) an exact copy of the Winchester Model 12, which was an excellent shotgun through and through, and it should serve you just as well as the other two. Also, the takedown on that particular model is superb.

Be sure to thoroughly inspect the shotgun while at the store, and bring a flashlight with you to look into the action for rust or excessive wear. Just for the sake of caution, do a check on the pump release + safety just to be sure, and then you should be good to go from there. Finally, if you do run into any hangups when you first get it, don't immediately get too frustrated, it may just be a worn out magazine tube spring, which is super common on trade-ins
>>
>>32380505
hold all of em buy the one with the smoothest action regardless of brand a nicely broken in action on a used shotgun is a joy
>>
>>32377189
Except fore-ends and magazine extensions. The magazine tube is a different diameter than the standard 500.
Mavericks are decent enough though I've got a PGO one I keep as an extra bedside.
>>
I've owned a mav 88, mossy 590a1, Benelli nova, winchester m-12, and various autos; but the 870 express magnum is the only shotgun I've ever gotten rid of.
It became almost impossible to get through a tube without a malfunction. The main issue with modern 870s are steel rimmed target shells causing rough extraction. As we are all aware 870s nowadays are rougher around the edges and when coupled with rounds like that it becomes a recipe for malfunctions.
I honestly want another one though, an older wingmaster or police magnum, nothing feels quite as good as a well built 870.

Well mine doesn't get the same service use as say MilSpec 3443E tested a1s. You know, the test that embarrassed every other pump shotgun in service-use. Nor does mine get quite the same thrashing as say a military-service 870 -oh wait, those were replaced by the a1 too.

Ol' Johnny Fuddy Duddy and his video of a bent shell elevator (in the cheapest weapon model) is hardly credible. But I appreciate your input!
