Bolt catch roll pin is hard even with the perfect tools. I've built a few lowers without scratching anything, but I usually have to crush the roll pins down a little tighter and lube them up.

A few of my PSA blems had tooling marks from goofed bolt catch installs.

Recently built a billet lower with no roll pins... that was cake.

Just get an upper with BCG and CH from PSA, and one of their lower build kits. You can use the money you save to get sights and mags. I think PSA has some uppers on sale for Christmas with BUIS and rails.

Get a complete LPK and save $30. Don't buy anything from radical firearms, you will regret it. With keymod or MLOK you can attach rail sections and only have them where you need them. I highly recommend magpul pro MBUS but regular MBUS are good too. You can also get a KAC micro rear sight from ebay for $60.

well, I marred up my deer lower pretty nice and I bent the fuck out of the large fat roll pin, so now I'm waiting for a few replacements, hence why my pic has no bolt catch.
But I'm not really phased since this isn't a safe queen gun and aluminum doesn't rust, just oxidizes a hard outer layer.

Yeah I've had to hammer some roll pins pretty hard, I think sometimes they're out of spec. I get that you won't want it walking out, but if your experience was anything like mine, there are pins that just physically won't fit. In those cases crushing them helps. You can touch up the finish with black oxide, too. Nice to have around but not necessary.

I would have liked chrome lining but its not a deal breaker for the cost so I'll just make sure to treat her well. I liked the barrel profile and since I figured out how the keymod works I fell in love. Way better than the sharp rails that I had gotten used to into in the army.

Pretty basic. That style of stock seems less likely to catch on stuff and I always hated how high M16s and M4s went up behind the grip. It made a "firm handshake grip" awkward.

Usually when punch+hammer doesn't work, I'd just break out c-clamps and lots of tape for protection in irder to squeeze some stubborn roll pins in, but that goddamn bolt catch ears won't even let me do that since there's not much surface to grab onto unless I want the clamp to slip.

matchfags will say that and use unlined stainless steel barrels as a result, but the truth is there are way too many factors otherwise present to determine whether or not chrome lining makes a rifle significantly less accurate
it's a lot more to do with the man holding the gun than that, anyways
chrome lining is just to protect the bore from the elements and make it last a very long time. a salt bath nitriding process like your barrel underwent accomplishes the same effect, but with a thinner, more durable coating.
even if you don't really take care of it, the bore should outlast you.

I bought an assembled upper from PSA. It has a square barrel nut. I removed the barrel and stripped the upper for cerakote.

Is it as simple as just tightening the nut back down, or am I missing something. Also, torque specs?

I already have an AR15 and was planning my current build to be a side charger. I really like the look of the Gibbz with the ALG EMR. Is the M4E1 upper worth getting for my first AR build? It looks like it has a proprietary barrel nut, and it could only fit a very certain few rails.

The barrel nut on the M4E1 is not used to mount rails, only to secure the barrel. The mass you see in that picture is actually a fixed and separate rail mount for BAR type handguards. Aero is not the only manufacturer that makes BAR type guards, but theirs are probably the most bang for buck.

To be real honest, even those Del-ton budget line PSA offers have reviews and personal accounts on here that they work.They just have bigger margins of possibly not working.
But if you want some semblance of reputation for value-to-quality, PSA offers lower line, mid line (freedom label), and their premium line (FN sourced parts) all at reasonable prices.
Aero Precision is also pretty good.
If you mix and match a quality upper and blemished lower, you come out at around $150~200 more than the good entry level AR's M&P/Ruger/etc.
