>>
>>32356900
I'll say the same thing I always say in these threads:

Conventional "mechs" like in the OP are retarded as hell for obvious reasons, but I think legged vehicles in general may have some real, practical uses.

The main advantage of legs over wheels is the ability to handle rough and unpredictable terrain, and to climb. I would like to see legged artillery vehicles of some sort, about the shape of those walking dog robots you can't kick over that Boston Dynamics made. Probably unmanned. Their use would be to get artillery and other long-ranged weapons in difficult-to-reach places on mountaintops.

Drop a shit ton of them around an area before a battle, and have them climb up to every hilltop they can. Once your battle happens, you have all these nicely placed guns on top of mountains that rain shells down from unexpected places
>>
>>32358502
Not really. Investing in a big 'ol piece of shit that offers no discernible difference to current tech despite being expensive as all fuck is a horrible idea.
>>
>>32356900
It will be cool to see mechs, they aren't even arguably practical for anything I could think of off the top of my head besides being very expensive toys (like sports cars or giant trucks), but still cool.

A proper walker would imitate arachnids, not unstable high CG humans.

>just rained, ground soaking wet
>mech sinks into mud when attempting to walk

Spidermech has low ground pressure and enough legs to probe surfaces before taking weight.

>mech patrol, afghanistan, 20--
>steps on IED
7 legs remaining to elevate body instead of tamp the IED. Central operator in thorax is well protected.

>105mm AP to the knee
7 knees remaining. Shoot on the move while scuttling out of Dodge.

>.50 straight into the cockpit
Arachnid design could support a much tougher cockpit.

>Hoth, Galacy Far Far Away, 0 BBY
>bullshit snowspeeders throw a cable around your legs and drop you
Spreading some legs while having others inboard would be stable while leaving some legs for extrication. If cables are a threat, blast or lase them.

Yeah, I really meant "Why design a bipedal mech?" I've always been with four-legged, insectoid, or arachnid mechs. However, one thing you have to consider is that unless your mech can run at 60 mph, able to evade shells thrown at it, like some modern tanks, you mainly have a siege weapon.

I think a better approach is dropping the 'make it look like a man' idea, and go for smaller, dog-sized drones that can climb walls.

Imagine drones. But they're on eight legs. They can climb walls, have infra-red vision, and they have box-fed machine guns on them. And there's hundreds of them being airdropped all over the city you're holed up in.

That's the only practical application for legged machines that I can imagine, at least for combat applications. Then again, the nation using them would be pretty much identical to Skynet.

By that metric, scaling down the servos and pneumatics to fit in a man-sized frame with light vehicle-level armor plate carried by the robot/framework would be a decent idea to bring back the heavy foot-soldier outside of mechanized light foot units. Not only does it obviate 95% of the armament of a light foot troop including the mainstay support weapons, but also forces anti-armor troops to waste cumbersome warheads on numerous single-man-sized targets in lieu of engaging primary armor elements; not to mention a powered, armored frame allows a force to equip a whole platoon as if it were a support gunner and anti-armor/local-air-defence team. With significant armor plating coverage and lifted weight concerns on a soldier's body it also allows more fantastic devices like rocket packs to be deployed without endangering members of the unit or, mostly, the equipment users themselves.

tl;dr hardshell power armor makes Heinlein happy; light power armor makes Heinlein sad

These are fucking stupid inventions. There will never be battlefield mechs, this isn't fucking Avatar or one of your shitty anime comics. In the real world, these would be lightly armored because if they had armor comparable to a MBT they would be way too heavy. Therefore >>32356923 is right, they would be extremely vulnerable to AT weapons. They also do not provide any advantage over LAVs or MBTs.

Gonna be pretty pissed off if China/Russia/America decides to blow the fucking planet up before I get to see a flying car or android waifu.
>>
>>32363626
There are a few magical and probably impossible technologies that make those work, and the control scheme is always hand waved bullshit that basically boils down to semi-operator guided AI (it's been described as you telling the mech what you want it to do and the mech is the one who does it more then piloting a vehicle). But those things are a hell of a lot more hard sci-fi then fucking gundam ninja bots that power up depending on the willpower of the operator.
>>
>>32368032
It would take that long if humanity was still in antiquity. The more advanced humanity becomes the quicker progress itself occurs.
>>
Anyone got that info pic about if you're making a realistic mecha manga, if have to design it low to the ground and maintenance heavy?

At last someone truly sees.

I think the main issue with Mechs is tactics. A mech isn't going to fill the roles of the tank. But if you could balance a heavy weapon and a not gigantic size I could see them being useful as infantry support.

Only when compared to bottom of the barrel designs like the suits from the third Matrix film.
By non super-robot Jap standards the AMP is pretty standard at best.
>>
>>32375870
We'll I'd argue that standard = the most potentially feasible in real life. The AMP is simple, and that's a good thing.

>I thought that the AMP mechs from Avatar seemed moderately realistic

Well obviously they are, given that the gooks have literally just built exactly that.

Battletech nerd here, let me try to explain the lore on how battlemechs are controlled.

Short answer is the helmet is the key man/machine link. The neurohelmet monitors a pilot's sense of balance and pumps that data into the battlemech's gyros so that it can stand up right and not fall down easily. Additionally, the visor provides a compress 360 degree field of vision, comms, and basic protection for the pilot's head. Most other aspects are controlled via pedels, throttles, flight sticks, buttons, knobs, dials, voice commands, and various other means.

The control scheme is generally hand waved because it doesn't make for an interesting part of the story often and is irrelevant to the majority of video games that have come out. Least of all to mention the horrid level of complexity and lack of unified standardization. Different companies have made these over centuries for different empires that were hodge podged back into service from scrap even Tony Stark would refuse.

I'm speaking more to how they fly like fucking ballerinas and there is rarely if ever any kind of control scheme to explain HOW the 'pilot' is doing that. And even if there are reams of data on some mechs for the most part they are sci-fi techno magic with absolutely no basis in reality and made up words.

And no, BattleTech is NOT with no basis in reality. It's fiction and ect ect ect, but example the 100 metric ton walking tank moves like a fucking 100 metric ton tank and is full of all kinds of controls. Where as 'gundum' or what the fuck ever are generally capable of doing flips and are somehow controlled by a single stick.

Battletech nerd back at ya. The control scheme is hand waved bullshit and in the earliest books where they describe how it works it also makes little sense. One flight stick controls the entire machine, another controls all the weapons. How the fuck do you make it pick up it's left arm as compared to it's right, as opposed to both, ect ect ect.

And the neuro-helmet does just what you said, but that is all it does. Transfer a sense of balance to keep the whole fucking thing upright. It has never been described what a pilot actually does to make the machine bob and weave. The closest is a reference to, as I said, AI doing the vast majority or the work and the operator more telling the machine what to do. It was one of the main books in Classic Battletech I think? It described a 'mysterious' incident where a dead pilot alpha striked her enemy and killed them. According to the 'teacher' in the fluff piece it makes a lot more sense when you realize the machine was just following it's last general command, 'Kill that guy'.
