Why aren't military blimps/balloons/dirigibles/zeppelins a thing again yet?
>>32352387
Big, slow, easy targets.
>>32352387
lack of giant Picklehaube for them, although I dream of a day Airship Gondola Crewman is an MOS and kaiser balloons sail through the sky dropping ordinance on unsuspecting arabs
tfw you will never brrrt an enemy airship
Could it be because they look like a giant floating bum?
>>32352394
>Big, slow, easy targets
With current optical and missile technology, couldn't they be up 100,000 ft+ and still be effective?
>>32352406
>Not wanting to drop bombs from a giant floating bum on people
>>32352387
They do.
JLens.
Now git.
>>32352417
>tfw you're manning your post when the captain announces that crewmen are no longer allowed to paint the bombs shades of brown, green, or yellow.

Never change America.
Look up the use of aerostats in Afghanistan. They are being used.

Putting missiles on mobile oppression outposts might be a little too 1984 for some people, best just keep them telling the drones what to kill.
>>32352387
They can't survive the frontlines but could work as coast guard ships. Loiter for months on end. Make the skin solar panels. Have docking hooks for modern biplanes to deliver fresh crews and supplies and you'll have essentially an aircraft that can stay on station indefinitely. Put an autocannon below it too.

Someone post the airship in the Hangar that looks like Mikasa's ass
>>32352408
How much does the ordinance weigh? That's a factor the would limit the elevation. Increasing size would counter, but how big would that need to be and what would the cost of the material be to withstand the elements and pressure changes. Honestly I think its a neat idea but we stopped using air ships for a reason.
>>32352406
Oh god, imagine the horror of some how making a 40mm gattling cannon that has brown colored tracers.
>>32353819
imagine some fuel cell/solar powered laser cannon on a blimp making kebabs go up in flames
>>32352387
There's actually some thought and ongoing RFCs on them being used for COIN roles.
They'll never be considered for something else, though
a mothership drone protected with anti-missile lasers that releases smaller drones that kills the target
>>32354116
what game is that?
>>32352394
You don"t have to worry about it if the main purpose is internal surveillance.
Israel used them to monitor the palestinian, while Thailand also used the same blimp as Israel to suppress secessionist rebels
>>32352387
If you can get one to go Mach 3 then be my guest. The things were obsolete by WWI.
>>32352387
Hindenberg.
>>32353400
this.
very good for border patrol as long as they havee units to direct in (ground units or helicoptered in).
>>32352399
the navy used to have airships: what did they use as job titles?
The real question is when are we gonna see zeppelins used in place of cruise ships...?
>>32352387
Well, in WWI, they were easy targets for rickety biplanes.
Now put an airship in the context of any aviation technology of the last 80 years.
What >>32354184 said.

They are in Afghanistan.
