.357 Magnum is more than good enough for self-defense

Revolvers are more fun to shoot at the range IMO; you also get that sweet single action trigger for when you feel like putting the target out to 50 yards or more

how powerful is enough is a matter of opinion, but 45 is more powerful than 9 as a matter of fact

I started on the .40 with a Glock 22. Kicks harder than 9x19, but once you get used to it, I find it reliable.

Not gonna comment on self defence, but for plinking .22 is the cheapest by far, but it can get a little mundane being as light as it can.

In reality, 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP are going to be the most common handgun cardtridges for semi auto pistols in which you'll find ammo for anywhere. I'd advise you try renting a couple different guns (if your local range does that) to see what you prefer instead of letting memes dictate your choice.

When it comes to revolcers .357 Magnum is a good choice because it can fire the lighter .38 Special load as well, giving you a lot of ammo variety (keep in mind a .38 Special will not fire .357 Magnum though).

Overall revolvers are going to almost always be more reliable than a semi auto just because of a lack of moving parts and greater simplicity, but in the end it's gonna be your personal preference.

Plus ammo runs the gamut from .40 cal light loads to full house bear stoppers.

It's not the cheapest though, but plinking ammo can be had for roughly the same price as .45.
The only issue is local availability of ammo will likely be lacking, so one will have to get ammo online almost exclusively.
