I can recognise handguns, modern rifles and scatterguns (to a degree).

It's specifics (exact model) and older rifles that I can't do. I'm guessing the last one is in part due to the majority of them having a fairly similar design concept.

And I'm attempting to educate myself. I wouldn't say I'm a newbie though.
