This next part is not directed at you, but one thing I always see in over-penetration arguments is that people treat rooms in these scenarios like they're empty aside from humans. These rounds are going to hit furniture and shit on the way out too. That is going to slow them down at least a little bit.

Question:

How am I supposed to defend myself during a home invasion in Australia?
I've been burgled this year once while I was out for about 10 minutes. Only the other night I caught someone climbing the staircase to my house at around 2am (live above shops).

I do have access to firearms -- but I'd be looking at jail time if I used them in this case. Other than that I was looking at scary machetes or a nulla nulla.

I keep my G19 mounted on my bed frame above my head when I'm sitting at my desk so I can swivel it down like pictured to grab it. When I'm laying in bed (it's a loft) It's right there. Also two spare mags and a flash light though I have one on the gun.

Also my G26 mounted under my desk with a magnet because I needed to put it somewhere. SCCY CPX-2 in a foot rest and Mossberg 500 behind bookcase in living room, shotguns in all the other bedrooms too.

Proud of my little setup here at least. I have a clear view of the living room from my bed elevated in the loft through the bedroom door so if it was an emergency I could illuminate the living room and fire from my bed if I couldn't climb down.

But it's still always right there if I'm at the desk. It's worked for me a few times because the dog will bark in the middle of the night or someone in my family wakes me up with panicking over something.

My bedside weapon is my USP 45 Tactical with a TLR3 on it. I live in a narrow townhouse, so I chose this pistol (it's also my field pistol when I go hunting) since it's reliable, has 12+1 rounds of Federal HST, has a light, and is able to be wielded in the confines of my home easily. I have a reload next to it should things be truly fucked, and an AR under my bed.

You can miss completely with either. And one you can just fire again, the other you're going to have to take time to cycle and or reload the gun. Both of those things again present you with a situation you can fuck up. And that problem isn't completely solved with a semiaut shotgun, since the recoil is also enough to throw you off target.

I don't know about the other guy but I specifically said a shotgun is not bad for hd. It's just worse than a rifle. You don't need any complicated scenario for that to be the case, either.

You can easily miss with a shotgun at 5 yards. Nothing has spread by that point, your pattern is going to be roughly 0.70" at that distance. And if you do miss you might just die. If you have a pump shotgun you might short stroke it, accidentally lock it, or even forget what to do. When you are sitting there pissing yourself in that situation those things can and do happen.

And again, don't get me wrong, there are a number of reasons to use a shotgun over a rifle for home defense. But those reasons are along the lines of:

1. I have more training with a shotgun

2. I don't have enough money for a proper rifle but can afford a cheap pump

3. I prefer a shotgun because of xyz reason particular to my case
