The british government does not consider commonwealth citizens to be foreign, so if you have citizenship of a commonwealth country its quite possible- this is why lots of australia's navy specialists are british nationals.
I think you have to be a citizen to join the military, but the MOD website probably has all the info you want

Don't know much about the British military, but from my experience the average grunts are comparable.

Comparing Finland to the US and UK is a joke. The US and UK militaries have been frequently deployed to war zones for the past 15 years. The senior NCOs that make up the backbone of an army have more combat experience than the entire current Finnish military. It's doesn't matter how tough their basic training is. Training does not make a soldier. War makes a soldier.

not true, UK Army makes less than American army after housing pay, ect. I personally sat down with a color sergeant from 1 Rifles and compared pay, I'm a US Army SFC so equivalent rank on NATO scale and I made much more. Some of my lower enlisted did the same thing. US Army makes more.

If you´re under 30, and want a Finnish citizenship, you pretty much HAVE TO do the military service in FDF. There´s a specialized brigade for less fluent Finnish speakers, where most of the training´s in English.

FDF is a DEFENSE forces, which´s whole task is to defend the country from external threats.

Not gonna go into finer details here, but it must mark something when even the US troops praised the skills and discipline of "mere conscripts" of Finland in their joint training operation last summer.

Gear and training-wise, FDF´s is as fucking NATO (with tiny local twists of its own) as it is physically possible, without being an actual member.

How does one just become a mercenary? I did an enlistment as a grunt Marine and have documentation attesting to 2 combat tours/16 months in Helmand province and a combat action ribbon, but it seems that the worthwhile groups want 10+ years of experience unless I want to get sent to some bullshit boring assignment guarding some CONEX containers in the middle of no where. I'm considering an enlistment in the FFL next to get some more experience and learn a new(and valuable) language, and then jumping to the merc world from there.

Now if you want to go work for FDF as CO it's a bit more tricky:
>You have to be at least Corporal (NCO) when you complete your conscription
>apply to military academy to begin training (you have to be under 26yrs old)
>Graduate and get CO rank with papers
>Apply for job

There's also civie jobs in FDF that don't require higher military education.

i don't really think finland needs all that combat experience. it's a country that minds its own business and doesn't go on oil crusades. but a lot of the NCOs have been abroad in afghanistan or somewhere else. the amount of people working in FDF that are vets can train a LOT of conscripts and do so almost every day.

And FYI, Finland doesn't have proper "soldier career" unlike britain does. There is no active recruitment (because conscription). If you want an easy-to-get-in career in armed forces, I'd suggest Brits since they have that kind of system.

This very much. Finland has unpaid (only small daily allowance) conscription, and that's it for 99,5% of the people. Then they move on with their lives. There may be some refreshers in the future, nothing frequent at all though.

British military is a professional military. It's a whole different world in this sense. You need to be a British Commonwealth citizen though. Check out which one of those gives you the citizenship the easiest.

I looked into this a couple years ago and decided against doing my conscription. I don't speak a word of finnish or swedish so I would be the dumb fuck american that everyone has to prop up. they probably wouldn't let you do anything since you can't understand the commands.

Obviously we had to translate most of the instructions to them but by the end of the basic training they were a natural part of the group. The basic orders in dress formations etc are easy to just memorize.

Given that for both of these countries you have to be a citizen, you can't, unless you have citizenship through your parents.

Ireland accepts anyone from the EU though, so that would probably be slightly easier.

French Foreign Legion you can do but expect to get shitty pay, treated like shit, and have to learn a shit language.
