Mossberg 500 12 gauge is a perfect choice. I have an ATI talon stock on it, the pistol grip is a bit awkward to work the tang safety but it reduces the kick so much I can shoot magnums all day. Or if you want a cruiser shorty get a hogue pistol grip not the shitty stock one that's hard as rock

If you aren't hunting, a shorter barrel (18.5" typically) is preferable for ease of movement indoors. You can also consider a "bantam" model with a shortened stock and pump stroke for the same reason.

I prefer a wooden stock over synthetic because it looks less intimidating

Don't spend too much on the gun. Any Mossberg 500 is good. Use saved money and buy a variety of slugs and buckshot.

Get a Hi-point carbine anon, they are great little guns. A 9mm or .45 hi point carbine will be around $350 with 2 extra mags and mag holders that fit on the stock. The guns are very reliable with a lifetime no questions asked warranted, you could literally beat one with a hammer for fun and hi point would still gladly fix/replace it.
