>Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Not really /k/-related but people got mad at him for telling the truth and for giving real world examples. Basically he aired a bunch of dago dirty laundry and they all got butthurt that someone had the gaul to mention it.

Basically it laid people's practices out in the open and complicated the game even further in what was already the most politically fucked up region I can even think of.

I've never really liked how this stated that Washington declining absolute authority over his country was

>"...something no other man in history had done,..."

Because that completely glosses over Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, whom Washington was imitating in the first place, and whom did the exact same thing, twice. Once in 458 BC and the second and last time in 439 BC.

To further elaborate, the only thing he did that makes modern people angry is write The Prince. My post indicated that that is not /k/-related, but it also doesn't warrant anger. He did literally nothing wrong.
>>
>>32339798
>Not really /k/-related but people got mad at him for telling the truth and for giving real world examples.

For the most part he was a self-serving politician though. It's telling because The Prince was written during a time of political upheaval in his home city, and it's commonly accepted that he did it to try and get in the good graces of the current regime. Previous to that he'd written The Republic, which is considered one of his best works, and contrasts several of the points he makes in The Prince.

>we need to haze people to death to protect liberty and freedom
Yeah, real convincing.

>>32343422
Now this guy couldn't be more true. And it's not even for most of the reasons /k/ usually says.

Let's lay it out...

He's the head of security on a planet that's absolutely hostile to human life. Animals, air, natives, and probably the fucking plants all are happy to kill you without thinking twice about it. To the point where he nearly had his face torn off by some big fucking animal on his first tour there. He's been dealing with this crap for a long time, and probably seen a lot of people die. So with that in mind let's consider how he carries out his duties as head of security.

He takes his job very seriously when it comes to keeping people safe from wildlife (workers and scientists travel with armed guards and in armed gunships) and the jungle is kept far back from the walls of the compound. He also cares about his soldiers, by the simple fact that he genuinely tries to buddy up to what's-his-name with no legs, since he's basically the only member of the 'civilian' personnel that he can relate to. In fact, it can be argued that he cares about all the people on the base because of his dedication to the job, and his role in protecting them from all the hostile shit on the planet.

And then there's the attack on the aliens themselves. He doesn't go out of his way to seek conflict, but gathers intel in preparation for one since the natives are quite happy to put an arrow in you just for stepping on the wrong fucking flower. And when on the attack he's not some genocidal madman, he's just a guy following orders from the dickhead that corporate put in charge. Otherwise he wouldn't have started with some teargas, and only opened fire with lethal munitions when the natives attacked, destroying their tree but allowing them to retreat when they could have been massacred with ease.

Otherwise he wouldn't have started with some teargas, and only opened fire with lethal munitions when the natives attacked, destroying their tree but allowing them to retreat when they could have been massacred with ease.
but dude he's a buff white male soldier lmao

Forget the Marine who died; that was an accident, and, while Mr. Code Red broke regs resulting in his death, he should have received no punishment beyond losing his chance at stars.

But that wasn't good enough for him. He conspired to have two Marines under his command convicted (and possibly executed) in order to protect his career.

THAT was his crime. THAT was his sin. Semper Fi--and when it mattered, he chose his own selfish interests above the faith of his men in him.
>>

Don't you think it is possible to do both?
Move the space niggers away from the tree to get the resources. AND study shit? We've clearly seen that they were not the only niggers on the planet. They were just the ones sitting on the biggest ore vein.

Also the "research" they were doing wasn't on the biology as much as on the ""culture"" of the natives and their shit tree.
>>
>>32352262

Yeah but you forget that they love that tree soooooo much because the plot dictates the natives come into conflict with the humans and then the natives win.

If they had tried to do that it would have resulted in stupid trail of tears bullshit and then the same damn things happening anyway.

The only mistake quaritch made in all of that was even bothering with a ground campaign in the first place in assaulting the world tree, and not printing off some basic casings for his mining explosives and then dropping them from above the natives' flight ceiling. Or booking it through fast enough that they couldn't do much more than become shitsmears on the nose of the shuttle, if that. Thus reserving all his forces to protect his well fortified base while destroying his enemy's brainstem.

But no, that would have been too easy, so instead he has to fly a sortie and shoot at the ayys and run a retarded and completely pointless ground campaign. Because he's a hard charging son of a bitch and it's the only way the ayys stand a chance, and even then he still would have won if it wasn't for the power of friendship swooping in to save them

Perhaps to some degree, but more "they have it, we need it and they won't accept any kind of compromise or deal, so it's time for war.
If there are two people, one of whom is dying from from something treatable, but has a gun while the other has the cure but is unarmed and refuses to help the dying man, someone is likely to get shot.
You can argue who is right or who is wrong, but righteousness has never healed a bullet wound.

They never stated what the mineral actually does, only that it's really fucking expensive.

The diplomatic measures and the attempted less than lethal solution were just to justify their later lethal actions. They even went as far as to provoke the natives by intentionally bulldozing a holy site. No, anon, it was clear from the get-go that the executives there were only interested in money.

Most people have no idea what the fuck Machiavelli was really about. Dude didn't advocate evil dictatorships and tyranny. He really didn't even advocate being manipulative, just pragmatic. If anyone had bothered to read the Prince before going into Iraq or Afghanistan we could have saved a lot of lives. In fact looking back on both wars we pretty much did the opposite of everything he advocated a smart ruler do during an occupation.

>>32352735

Hey man, I don't know how much more simple it gets.

Humanity is having a terrible energy crisis, the only known and proven way to deal with it is unobtanium.

Yeah, you can screw around with studying the native shit - and they did, it was the retardation of the science team itself that they focused on muh native culture than on the actual ecosystem itself because Cameron couldn't be fucking bothered to deviate too far from the plot of "Study native culture, get immersed in it."

For all we know, there were science teams out there that were actually doing their jobs and studying the biology that we never saw because we were focused on the head retards, cripple man and hippie bitch. That got kicked the fuck off the planet because chopstick legs decided he liked the native tail more than a future for the billions back home.

They really were doing both at once.

But at the end of the day you have to put bread on the table. You wanna talk about postponing the inevitable? You will inevitably starve if you don't eat, you will inevitably dehydrate if you don't drink. Your entire life you postpone the inevitable.

What you're proposing is choosing not to eat because lol, we'll just get our top guys on reverse engineering photosynthesis and we'll figure out a way for you to do it before you starve.
>>
>>32352829
The heavily armed ones though

I wonder if Attack Helos in the future will ever carry that much fire

I want one of them walking things though, modified of course
>>
>>32352829

Handgun rounds penetrated the cockpit as well, as I recall, and it's not really that big of a stretch for those huge as fuck na'vi bows to propel arrows into high enough speeds to crack the glass. And there's no telling what kind of material the arrowhead is made out of.

>>32352843

>Humanity is having a terrible energy crisis, the only known and proven way to deal with it is unobtanium.

Yes, it's effectively fuel. Getting more fuel will only postpone the inevitable, like I said. It's the same thing we're facing in a couple of decades when oil runs out. Our whole infrastructure is based on oil, and the sooner we start overhauling it, the less of an effect oil depletion will have.

>Yeah, you can screw around with studying the native shit - and they did, it was the retardation of the science team itself that they focused on muh native culture than on the actual ecosystem itself because Cameron couldn't be fucking bothered to deviate too far from the plot of "Study native culture, get immersed in it."

The science team they sent was just there to appease people back on earth, whatever findings they made would be inconsequential. The executive being dismissive of the team's findings is proof.

And it really isn't a big surprise that the crippleman chose natives instead of his own people; his life back on Earth was shit, and getting his legs back wouldn't really fix anything. That and he could actually experience things on Pandora he couldn't on Earth. The callous treatment of the natives by the corp only solidified his resolve, I think. Remember that he lived with them for months.

Unobtanium clearly isn't a cure for the disease, it's just treating the symptoms.
>>
>>32352843
>Humanity fucks over Earth with shortsighted thinking, greed
>Now wants to fuck over the only intelligent life besides humans in the known universe as a stopgap measure
So are you okay with humanity becoming a roving, destructive, selfish force, willing to kill and destroy and betray our own values because we refuse to learn and continually fuck ourselves over?

If "putting bread on the table" requires theft and violence against an alien lifeform with intelligence rivaling ours, then maybe starving is deserved. Are you in favor of men who have spent themselves homeless breaking into your house to survive? I mean, they are merely trying to "put bread on the table", as you said.

If you're killing without provocation to save yourself from your own greed and stupidity, you don't deserve to survive.

>Getting more fuel will only postpone the inevitable
Are you implying we should eat raw meat?
>>
>>32352909

>Are you implying we should eat raw meat?

No, I'm saying that instead of having an infrastructure that's based on expanding consumption of a non-renewable fuel source, they should instead figure out a way to tap into a powerful renewable one. Regardless of what happens on Pandora, a crisis will inevitably occur.

And for the record, eating meat at all in a situation as dire as that is a really bad idea.

>fuck it, war, we need this or billions will starve
>somehow billions of humans starving is better and more appealing than just relocating the aliens

Let me guess, you're against Planet Cracking as well?

Let me tell you, if tomorrow some NASA hotshot told me we could crack the moons of Saturn to get resources to supply Earth, I'd be the first one to sign up to mine asteroids. Your argument is the same as the people that hate Machiaveli, pragmatism and Realpolitik are truly the only things in this world that make sense. You do what you can to survive, help others when it is convenient.

I say that as someone who tithes and gives blood, because it is COMFORTABLE to give, and I'm not put out by it, but if push came to shove, I'd kill for Venezuelan oil so America could keep on chugging.

You should be happy, humans don't have to kill humans in Avatar, we just have to kill blue cat people who won't just move to another fucking tree.

You're on /k/ for christ sake, what do you expect?

Wandering alone in central park, on a galactic scale.

We need that shit,we're gonna take it. You can't eat the moral high ground, it won't sustain you. As much as people love to wax on about how great it would be, that's the way things have always worked and we have never been better than that. One civ runs into another, one's bigger and has better tech, it kicks the little one around and takes its lunch money. Maybe the big one invents excuses and lies to itself about how it's an imperative to do so, and for them it's different. But at the end of the day nobody is better than that, and nobody ever will be. Time and time again, it never stops.

There is no getting away from it. Trying to get away from it just gets you slaughtered by people who are desperate and don't care about the moral high ground.

If you're such a fucking moralistic weenie that you aren't willing to go hard when the going gets hard, then you deserve what you get.

Oh yeah? What makes us so special?

Language, cognition, complex social systems - all these things exist in the natural world. We got lucky and now we're the dominant organism, but I'm pretty sure that isn't gonna last.

Morality is a joke. There are so many differing systems, so many different cultures and derivatives - you can twist morality to justify whatever you want or need it to and if you beat people over the head with it enough they'll take it.

Morality is just another tool in the societal toolbox aimed at maintaining social cohesion. It doesn't make us speshul.

You know what we have over the rest of the natural world?

Tool use.

That's it.

I'll take that as a never.

Which is fine, because most of the blood in America is provided by people like me who give every 54 days, we make up a percent of a percent, and less than 10 percent will ever give blood, much less give blood regularly.

The obvious irony here is that the man who is being berated is the same man who goes out of his way to help others as much as possible as long as I am comfortable.

Thanks for revealing the depths of your stupidity. So what are you, a soldier, or a cop? Nice Jessup impression.

Btw, this isn't a cringe thread, but thanks for providing the material next time one comes around. You failed to mention "sheepdogs" but I'm sure it just slipped your mind.

You don't really pretend to believe that most western wars of the last century have been fought to "protect freedom", do you? I mean, it would be delicious and funny if you did. Few if any of the enemies we've fought have been likely contenders for "people in any credible position to take away my freedoms". In fact, many of these misguided interventions have actively worked against my freedom and safety, whether in the form of blowback from collateral damage creating new fighters or even rogue attacks at home. And then there is the matter of the patriot act and other 'reasonable restrictions' on all those freedoms you claim to protect.

I can't say those "large men with guns" have done much for my freedoms, instead of solidifying and widening the influence of their political masters, enriching the arms makers and other parasites who'd hang us all upon that cross of iron. But you are free to believe the fairy tale, if you helps you sleep better at night.

You don't understand deterrence of force, it is *because* we have so many men with guns willing to fight that people don't fight us.

Just because politicians use our military for the wrong reasons does not, under any circumstances, mean that those men in the military wouldn't fight to preserve your freedom when it comes down to brass tacks.

>enriching the arms makers and other parasites who'd hang us all upon that cross of iron

You want to know who will prevent that from happening? The millions of people, regardless of job, who are willing to fight tyranny.

Again, deterrence, as long as we have the *ability* to resist, and continue to make those bad men that would take advantage of us *believe* that we will resist, it won't happen.

I honestly don't see anywhere in there where he mentioned the military or law enforcement, so I am inclined to believe he just wants to call you what you are: a quivering pussy too afraid to fight for what he believes in.

This conversation began about Avatar. This isn't a matter of personal charity but a coherent moral philosophy. Besides, charity is not an indulgence. Being generous to one group of people does not excuse you crimes against another. You don't get to make up for a broken moral center by earning brownie points elsewhere.

What 'generosity' did I preach but a coherent and universal moral system where one didn't turn into a vicious animal when it saw someone weaker with something it wants.

or

>Earth starves

I would much, much rather force out the aliens. Reminder: it is not a war of extermination, it never was.

Pragmatism is key, Realpolitik is still the only viable strategy, and arbitration based on feelings is irrelevant.

You FEEL humanity should not kill aliens and ship home minerals, but humanity NEEDS those minerals, therefore we should kill anyone that tries to stop us.

If you were in a position where you had to shoot someone in order to have food and water, you would do it, and if you had the means and refused, you would be retarded, and dead. I would still be alive. I would even allow you the moral high ground after I finished my meal.

No I wouldn't.

>and if you had the means and refused, you would be retarded, and dead.
See, you talk of 'freedom' and 'charity' in times of plenty, when you have the means to give and you sacrifice little in doing so. But when the chips are down, when times are tough, you abandon those ways, and reveal who you really are. You admit you'd sink to murder for your own survival, a willingness to kill an innocent person just to save yourself.

You see, I'm not a savage like you. I might be dead, but at least my conscience could be clear. If you're willing to abandon your supposed beliefs in the times when those beliefs actually become difficult to abide by, then you never really stood for them did you?

You're stupid. Respectable, but stupid.

The best part is that during the time period depicted, that's one of the "good" guys.

Human civilization, as depicted in Avatar, has fusion technology and interstellar capability. There shouldn't be an energy crisis.

No, that'd be Kurze; who literally bitched about his legion being filled with murderers and psychos despite being the one who decided they should recruit from murderers and psychos. Angron was a simple man with simple desires surrounded by selfish idiots.

That would be an interesting perspective and make a great movie.
>TFW Hollywood would never make it

The movie is pretty, but none of the characters are likable in the least because of how stupid they act in order to advance the plot.

As a veteran of the Morrowind campaigns I can assure you that this is literally the worst thing that can happen. Ever.

And this is why we're never, ever gonna be better than that.

Because the guy willing to kill to survive does so, and you die so prettily upon your nice little moral hill.

Case in point.
