Sup /k/, just finished my first semester of college and I want to become a gun owner. Is the 10/22 a good rifle to start with? I've heard a lot about them. What are some good stocks to go with that won't break the bank? Essential mods?

My new and improved flowchart

You don't really need any mods or aftermarket stocks for a 10/22. If you fancy a scope you can eventually get one but that's about all you really need.
>>
Extended mag release in my opinion. And 25 round magazine. I haven't done anything crazy to mine yet.
>>
An excellent choice, bonus points if you add tech sights.
>>
How cucked is NJ as far as gun laws go? I know they are incredibly restrictive on carrying and transportation laws.

They are one of the worst states to own a gun.

You don't really need anything OP, but if you want you can make it into anything.

Pic related, my 10/22

Thanks, think I'm going to go to a range tomorrow and shoot one, I love the flexibility of the platform, anywhere from a long range accuracy gun to a more tacticool feel like your pic related.
>>
do you plan to shoot up the college

this will affect my suggestions

ENOUGH

I would just use the stock that it comes with for a while.

Some helpful mods:
Volquartsen extractor
Volquartsen or DIY auto bolt release
Aftermarket or DIY bolt buffer
Sling and swivels
I think most brand new 10/22s come with a larger mag release but if not, this >>32339077

I'd say Tech Sights or some other aftermarket peep sights are a more substantial improvement than half of those things you listed, though I did start with an automatic bolt release and a soft bolt buffer. You can do both of those at home with little effort. Stock and extended magazine are cool but provide little practical benefit, unless you prefer the ergonomics.
>>
>>32339788
I agree, but everything I listed can be done for like $40 or less. OP mentioned budget being an issue for a stock, so I didn't want to give a laundry list of mods that could put them in a position to be waiting and saving up money to do it all before even taking the gun out to shoot. Besides, tech sights are best appreciated when you've had to use the stock 10/22 sights for a few range trips.
>>
>>32340032
The auto bolt release is just a little pin that needs to be shaved down right? Seems like a waste of $10 when you can do it for free.
>>
>>32340133
Which is why I said 'or DIY' and '$40 or less'. All depends on OP's level of confidence in doing something to their first, brand new gun.
>>
>>32339046
dont fall for the "git da .22 for muh frist gun" meme, it's retarded and after you spend 20 minutes learning how to shoot it, you have a glorified pellet gun with no pratcical use
>>
>>32340264
This is the most autistic thing I've ever seen posted on this board.

t. retard who is trying to justify dumping $400 into his $120 rabbet plinking gun

don't fall for the "glorified pellet gun with no pratcical use" meme, it's retarded and you will have a rifle that is cheap to shoot great for practicing trigger pull and excellent for taking small game

10/22 was my first rifle and it's awesome but if I had to do this all over again I would probably go with the henry lever action 22. I bought the 10/22 thinking I would buy a ton of accessories for it and all I ended up buying is a scope and extra mags.

>>32340367
or take that money you would spend on your shitty toy and by a real rifle

poorfag detected, get a job ya hippie then you will be able to afford more than one rifle

takedown 10/22 and absolutely no mods other than POSSIBLY getting an optic, but just do a generic 1-6 or 3-9 scope if you must; ironsights are fine.

You can start with an AR-15 as long as it doesn't limit the amount that you shoot it (due to difference in ammo prices).
>>
>>32339046
I would recommend you go with a 9mm pistol first, so you not only have a gun but something viable for home defense. .22s are more for really honing your trigger control and practicing gunsmithing, and shotguns recoil too much that you might get discouraged to keep shooting it.
>>32339073
This is such shit I can hardly fucking believe it. I'm drunk enough to make one of these that's not completely ass.
