Why didn't the army airforces just bomb all the Germans at the Normandy beaches and then send in the infantry?
>>32327854
They did. Google earth that shit and look at all the craters.
Because the Germans had defenses for just that sort of thing in the form of anti-aircraft guns, bunkers, trenches, and so forth.
>>32327854
The bombers missed the beach

Why didn't OP research the premise of his question before asking it here?

because I've had a bottle of wine and I'm watching saving private ryan

>op said airforce
Whoops time to commit sudoku.
The germans had a fuck ton of AA all over the coast which is why airborne went in at night and got their asses handed to them in hopes to knock out and disable AA along with other raids against heavy artillery positions and capturing key positions.

All about dat abv senpai
June 5th saw massive amount of air units committed, mostly to drop the Airborne Divisions, but also many bomber units were committed to bomb the beaches.
Due to night time, the general inaccuracy of WW2 bombing, the heavy anti air cover, and heavy fog in the early morning, the bombing was only middlingly effective at best.
In the case of Omaha Beach, the beach head covered in Saving Private Ryan, the bombers seem to have missed the beach entirely. Overshooting by about half a mile to a mile, leaving the beach basically unmolested.
The navy did conduct shore bombardment, but due to fear of coastal gun positions it was done at great range. Their effect was varied, effective in some areas, but again in the case of Omaha, completely ineffective. Furthermore most of the navy was committed to protecting the invasion force from sea borne threats. Although the Kreigsmarine had been dismantled early in the war, the threat of shore based torpedo boats and U-Boats was all too real. Despite that, one Destroyer did commit to helping Omaha beach and sailed within range of shore based guns to attempt to provide close shore bombardment for the beleaguered troops.
Through all this, the most disastrous part of Omaha was the armor. To sum it up shortly, the tanks sunk. Almost every tank sunk in the choppy waters, the few that made it ashore did not survive long against dug in guns. One of the tanks did survive for a time, and the Destroyer used the fall of its shells to help guide their own bombardment, attempting to follow the shots of the Sherman with their own guns.
The British faced arguably even tougher defended beaches, with kill positions and intact gun positions overlapping the beach. Omaha is a much longer beach than is depicted in the movie, the actual shoreline would have been partially obscured by fog, but the long, flat beach offered very little cover for the Americans.
The British beaches were much shorter, and similarly had no cover, but also no obscuring fog.

However, the British had learned well from their disaster at Dunkirk. Without close fire support infantry attacking entrenched positions would be shredded, pinned down, and slaughtered.
Because of this they took enormous care into ensuring that armor would be able to make it ashore.
And it worked, the British tankers landed on the beaches and made short work of the defenses, and the British pushed inwards while the Americans floundered at Omaha, lacking anything but sporadic fire from a Destroyer and small arms to tackle entrenched guns and machine gun nests.
Progress came with blood and grit and time when small groups of men managed to worm their way up into German lines. A few miles away British tankers loaded High Explosive and punched through barbed wire with their tanks in a rapid assault.
Omaha was the fault of improper planning more than anything, and its success in spite of that.

It was Army tards until 1947

You mean Dieppe.
Though I never know how much of that is actual lessons learned, or justifying the disaster at Dieppe as an educational experience so it doesn't seem like as much of a disaster.

Navy thought they could do just as an effective job with a naval bombardment .
Army air was too busy dropping in paratroopers the night before.
Both arms missed their targets sorely....
Still got the job done though Froto.
