Urgent
Is the application of the ceasefire and directed by armed men from the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo was false, and negotiations are experiencing major complications, under tension and processes occurring in fronts.

So latest on T4 seems to be IS has completely besieged the base and has pushed as far west beyond it as Furqas.
I'd take it with a grain of salt, but it seems like the offensive still has some legs to it.

Man I'm usually pretty chill about people posting uninformed opinions on social medias, but all this "stop the massacre NOW" when the city has been a warzone for several years and the horror is living its final hours is rubbing me the wrong way.
Help me stay strong

>>

Supposedly ceasefire is back in effect and the evacuation will begin this morning, rebels having agreed to allow access to nearby villages they're besieging as demanded by SAA, which is what derailed things to begin with.
Taking bets now something else manages to come up at the last moment and the infinite ongoing siege of Aleppo will somehow continue further.

I don't frequent Middle East threads but I try to watch it carefully. I explained Aleppo like this to a coworker today.
>so imagine you're the Nazis, you have to take Moscow and the only way to do it is raping and pillaging your way to Moscow because that's warfare
>uh huh
>now imagine you're a red army soldier and you're told to take Berlin anyway you can which means rape and pillage because that's warfare
>uh huh
>so something similar is happening in Aleppo
>yeah but raping and pillaging is wrong
>YOU JUST DONT GET IT DO YOU THERE IS NO MORAL HIGHGROUND ONLY THOSE THAT LIVE
>>
>>32332237
Basically. And it was a somewhat recent anti Nusra pro tolerance/secularism kinda protest in Idlib. Nusra guys were standing around listening till it got to the point where they were butthurt and were like nah youre done talking.
>>
>>32332874
You argued wrong. If you want to appeal to a pacifist, you have to argue how peace could be possible (and then shred that naive notion by informing them just how shitty this war really is).

Like how the US and Russia are meeting for peace talks, but the rebels and the SAA have not even attempted peace talks once- and no faction in this war is even slightly interested in any form of compromise. The rebels in particular are so fragmented politically even after 5 years that they cant negotiate anything larger than one city at a time. If they bring up the no fly zone Kerry suggested, just ask them why they want to take sides in some brutal shitty civil war.
>>
>>32333354
Basically this. Everyone sucks and is faggots.
>>
>>32333354
>and no faction in this war is even slightly interested in any form of compromise.

Thats not 100% true though. There are countless of local ceasefires and amnesties.
>>
>>32333354

>The rebels are so fragmented politically

Same for the Regime, to my understanding. Does Assad even still have a relevant armed force loyal to him, and not simply with vaguely converging interests (aka the Tiger Force and the Desert Hawks) ?
>>
>>32333472
>(aka the Tiger Force and the Desert Hawks) ?

So far nothing really indicates that these forces act on their own without the order or consent of Damascus. They might act autonomous for the most part, but so far both units are always deployed where Damascus needed them to be and they always lead the attacks.
>>
>>32332874
>and the only way to do it is raping

I think what war is and what you think it is are different things
>>
>>32333472
He has political pull to be like "go here", but the regime has little control more than that if it makes sense.
After the war is over he's gonna be dicked over. I'd be shocked if there wasn't a coup and further fragmenting.
>>
>>32333472
There army is certainly fractured but Assad still holds political power and can speak for the regime. Who is the rebel leader?

The kurds have their shit together but imo theyre just a larger split-rebel faction..

>>32333466
Key word: local. That wont end the war and those ceasfires get steamrolled by larger forces at play when required.
>>
>>32333555
>Key word: local.

Exactly, but as you said, there is no overall rebel leader so all that can be done is to talk with the leader of whatever area to reach a compromise there.

Sorry very little ground movement since Aleppo ended. Not much going on even around T4 and eastern Homs. All this pro rebel whining reminds me of their revenge filled explanations on why they lost so badly to Israel in the 6 day war. Times change , excuses don't. The war continues however.

as a French i do all the times.
Its a next level of propaganda stuck into their brain : They literally say that they lost because they fought vs USA
>>
>>32334807
In a way they did though, their airforce(being really the only thing that could destroy the arab mechanised pushes) was basically completely destroyed, and almost all their air bases overrun. We show up, park a carrier right off the coast, give them planes, and they use the carrier as their air base to bomb the arabs.

Anon, that crazy stuff you are claiming never happened. First, in the Six Day War Israel was with the initiative, at least in the Egyptian front, pushing deep into arab territory with THEIR mechanised formations. Not just that, the IAF almost totally obliterated the Egyptian air force in the first hours of first day of the war.

And even if you are mistaking the Six Day War with the October War of 1973; in this case it was Egyptian SAM emplacements that hold back and took a toil on the IAF, and not the EAF proper. And even in this war, Israel lost the equivalent to, more or less, one third of their operational aircrafts, while the arab countries lost the equivalent to, more or less, more than two thirds of theirs.

Also, in both those wars, US rushed their asses to stop the fighting and restore the status quo because they didn't wanted the oil price going sky high.

>>
>>32338921
It's in the process of being a major battle. I didn't get into T4 in yesterdays review because the lines are generally the same. Both sides claim the abandon artillery battalion nearby and i am not willing to vouch for either.

Regardless this area/mountain is where most of the combat is at while IS shells the airfield and the Ruaf bombs/strafes the outskirts to keep IS heads down.

tl;dr should be more heavy fighting there today, Ruaf will go HAM if IS breaches the base.
>>
>>32340699
Going to be a massive 'it depends' really, often they're built using whatever could be scrounged locally, other times there's been a more organised/centralised system for producing them that probably has a better supply of scrap and marginally more care in welding it all together than a couple guys chucking together a couple of them together the day before they're needed.
Also going to vary hugely depending on the chassis used, obviously you can't put as much shit on some shitty little town runabout car as you can a truck and expect it to still be capable of driving. If you've got a killdozer VBIED heading your way then better hope someone has a ATGM lined up and ready to go, even though it's all random crap having a couple tons of steel on the front is still going to take some penetrating.

The media won't cover that sort of thing because supporting Saudi Arabia openly isn't popular atm. It's one of those countries like the old pro-American dictatorships we propped up during the Cold War. Even though we know it's a horrid place, we ignore their atrocities because their government serves a purpose to us.
The media is going after the Assad/Russian camp because it's a matter of public policy for the media and current administration to try and oust Assad and to treat the Russians as enemies as if this is still the Cold War.

T4 battle review, day 4 or is it 5 I forgot. Not much. Almost the same lines as yesterday. Ruaf has been active on the outskirts with bombing raids as US bombing hit 14 IS tanks and some artillery pieces around Palmyra. Yes, the US military is probably looking for IS's newly acquired SA-3.
On a related note a uptick of fighting in Deir Ezzor by the airbase with a SAA BMP taken out by a ATGM while the SAA shells IS parts of the city.

Heavy fighting reported in eastern Ghouta. The Shia militias in Aleppo are detaining rebels trying to evacuate with civilians out of eastern Aleppo. Turkish FSA/Turkish army still on the outskirts of Al Bab. US backed SDF/YPG made minor progress north of Raqqa. Suicide bombing at a Damascus police station with a handful of casualties.

Everywhere has little lines changes. Another day in Syria is done.

I'm assuming you're an Arab because this myth is pretty much common in arab circles. The Israelis ran three sorties a day, and because the Arabs couldn't imagine how this is possible, those darn kikes MUST have Americans helping them.

At least, that's what you say if you're an air force general for a tinpot dictator that just had his ass crushed and you're concerned that he's about to strangle you with piano wire.

Joking aside, there isn't a shred of truth to it, it's just an assumption the arabs made to cover their assess.

normaly i would totaly agree, but kweires airbase was also sourrounded by flat terrain.
Deir-Ez-zor for example is or at least was for a long time besieged the same way (ISIS came close enough too)

both where not overrun...yet...(kweires is pretty save now)

Tabqa for example also had flat terrain and got overrun, but i think the commanders where retards
So, if the defensives of the airbase are good, this could be a new ISIS meatgrinder.
If they are bad, ISIS will most likely steamroll them any day...

ISIS lives from raids and capturing enemy weapon systems. IF the SAA and iraqi forces did give the slightliest fuck about minimalizing the possibillity that the enemy could gain shittons of your weapons when a damn village or town gets overrun, they would be in alot of better shape.

>>
>>32352543
What would be the point? There's only ever one realistic reason for a ceasefire in any conflict - as a prelude to peace talks. The media might treat ceasefires as an aim in itself, but the US and Russia have only ever treated ceasefires as a means of showboating to the populace at home. In the case of the US, to show it's doing something, and in the case of Russia to deliberately break it.
>>
>>32352543
yes. Russia/Turkey/Iran are going to negociate about that. The fact that the US and AS aren't a part of it increases the chances of success.

The old guys are mostly NDF. They had military training back in the day when they were young and thats it.
Those militias might have had some basic training in their country of origin as conscripts and maybe even more if iran gave them some.

But at this point most of them have seen plenty of combat i guess. War works pretty well to sort out able from unable soldiers. For each group of guys getting hit by an atgm because they cluttered together 10 other squads might have learned the lesson.

some people say a leppo is the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century. How true is this? I thought it was the tsunami in 2004 or the earthquake in haiti in 2010 but I might be mistaken, those weren't conflicts after all
>>
>>
>>32353300
If you apply a narrow enough set of filters then maybe.
As you mention natural disasters tend to top purely human achievements fairly easily in terms of fucking shit up.
If we limit it purely to conflict related then the stuff that goes on in Africa almost certainly affects more people since people like Boko Haram have been trashing sizable chunks of countries, and have little interest in humanitarian niceties. In fact plenty of pillaging and raping goes on there.
So if we limit it to human conflicts, and only look at what's happening over a very small area at any point in time, you might indeed be able to say it's the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century.

Let's do T4 first.
Tiger forces claim to be on the offensive in eastern Homs after taking the Qaryatayn cross roads toward Palmyra with little proof of this as IS still holds the small village of Sharifah west of T4 claiming to have killed and captured a handful of SAA and one Afghan Shia militia member. Both sides shelled each other around T4 airbase. Airstrikes continue. Fighting continues.

Heavy fighting in eastern Ghouta at Mid’aani town between JAI and the SAA. To make it clear the SAA captured Rayhan weeks ago however Midaani goes back and forth. Other than this assorted action Syrian wide with tit for tats in Latakia, northern Hama and new shelling airstrikes in southern Aleppo as the SAA looks to move on post Aleppo victory.

SDF/YPG continue advances in northern Raqqa while Turkish army/FSA have entered into parts of Al Bab city.

Bumping with SOHR account of T4 today, backing IS's side of the story of about 3 tanks destroyed. SOHR has improved a lot. The guy pulls no punches lately be it as rebel's lost eastern Aleppo he would consistently post SAA advances. SOHR caught a lot of flank during the beginning of the last battle of Palmyra when he report IS already in the city after pro SAA sources basically claimed IS was repelled. Turns out he was right. The only reason IS wasn't in the city briefly was due to heavy airstrikes. I don't believe everything SOHR reports. Another problem with SOHR is a lot of his shit is old news by the time he put's it online. You can find out this stuff as it happens and not wait for SOHR.

#BREAKING Russia says ready to veto UN measure on Aleppo observers

Hmmm looks like they wanna hide something :d
>>
>>32364106
Easier to keep control of things with buses where by their nature you only need to process a relatively small number of people at a time and can keep track of them the whole way, making sure you didn't have people sloping off to become a nuisance immediately would mean putting men along the whole route, which is then a lot of men to keep from lighting up the guys they've been fighting for so long. SAA need to have these exchanges work smoothly so they can keep offering them, big picture it's easier to bus out each pocket in turn than fight to the last man every time, locally there's always going to be a lot of anger to manage, probably too much if you have to have 1000s of men lining a route out. Plus there's likely plenty of wounded going that couldn't make that walk even if it was a option.
>>
>>32364106

They got away with literal murder that day because of an incident.
And these days, all they want is to truly test the AA systems, any of them they dragged to Syria.

Also why rebels dont focus on airbases ? They proofed they could take menagh airbase, even without isis (with turkish help) they could retake Bashar's airbases

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8pvtoaE79E
>>
>>32364574
What are they gonna do with an airbase? Even if they could use it and fly things they'd get shot down in ten minutes, and the US/Russia can just use out of country airbases or carriers.
>>
>>32364602

>>32364602

The airstrikes would be a lot more difficult, and rebels could anticipate the airstrikes by spotting the recon squads
>>
>>32364634
>rebels could anticipate the airstrikes by spotting the recon squads
That applies as much now as on some notional future scenario.

But really you're asking the rebels to take some of the better defended military installations, all across the country, and hold them all indefinitely. And for this to even remotely work that includes kicking the Russians out, even though they can just fly in from outside to keep dumping tons of FUCK YOU on any significant rebel concentrations. If you were saying this a year or two ago it wouldn't be a completely outlandish suggestion, but right now the rebels can barely pull off much in the way of large offensives, let alone multiple of them around the country.
>>

They have literally no air power.
Assuming you meant by artillery bombardment, that still requires getting sufficient arty in place to both eliminate the airfields and keep them from being repaired. Marginally easier than actually taking them, but still requires them to commit sizable forces to fairly static positions, once they even managed to get there which is still no easy task.

>With a massive and surprise offensive like T4 attack was, it is possible
That was IS not the rebels, they're still durkas but on average IS rank several levels above the rebels in terms of capability, especially when it comes to blitzing positions in surprise attacks. But they too lack the capacity for large attacks over widely disparate areas and have done for a while, they have enough fight left for a few surprises but they aren't going to suddenly push into massive new areas, because if they could they would have already.

Quite simply neither the rebels nor IS currently have the ability to go and take significant new territory, either on their own or even if they suddenly started acting entirely in concert with one another. Barring any remarkable turnarounds such as Russia deciding out of the blue to ditch Assad and let US/Turkey do what they want in Syria both factions are firmly on the path to defeat so far as being large standing 'armies' goes, the questions remaining are about how long will it take and how much damage can they do on their way out. I can see the answers there being quite some time and a lot, but that doesn't get them the ability to go on the offensive to the scale of what you're suggesting.

So the only chance for the rebels to survive longer than half a month is to plead allegiance to ISIS and wreck SAA somewhere and thus keep the war going for longer.
I wonder what CNN would say about all that. If they would say anything at all.

They've got a fair bit longer than that, not least because there's still quite a few pockets to clear up before the final grindfest of Idlib province, assuming of course SAA want to do things what seems like the sensible way. It'll probably take a week or two just to redeploy forces from Aleppo to start pressuring just one pocket heavily, and that relies on the never-ending soap opera of the Aleppo surrender to have ended before it can really happen in earnest.
Then they need to force a surrender, secure that area, redeploy to the next, rinse and repeat... all assuming there's no more urgent situations like T4 crop up that drain resources away, and indeed that the SAA don't just spread the eventually freed up Aleppo forces so thinly around the country they end up not making much difference.

Can anybody explain the current situation in Libya to me? What I'm reading on wikipedia and finding through googling doesn't really add up.

>Red is anti-islamists
>Light Green is government formed by agreements between former warring parties facilitated and supported by the UN
>Dark Green is government formed by islamists pretending not to be islamists
>White is open islamists
>Yellow is tribal dudes defending their farms and shit

>Light Green was formed by UN agreement between Red and Dark Green
>Dark Green was disbanded in April, yet for some reason is still on the map as of December 10th
>Yellow supports Light Green

So why is there still a "Libyan Civil War" if it appears that all the major players save for a few Islamist holdouts are in agreement on the new government?

Probably because it's an agreement in principle at a high level, and as with preceeding deals actually getting all the smaller groups that make up the larger factions to turn in their arms is a wholly different matter. Pretty good indicator of the potential future for Syria with too many local warlords unwilling to give up their recently acquired power back to a central government.

In the continuing Aleppo circus evacuations supposedly resumed overnight, how many hours before the next clusterfuck stops them again? If there's actually a whole day without something happening to cause another halt I'll be amazed.

I'm out of the libyan conflict for some months, but I'm still pretty sure that this map is completely bullshit and does not represent the reality at all.
First, most of these ""governments"" have little to no control outside the towns and cities and red especially is in various struggles with other factions in their towns and countrysides

But in general, yes red and green were opposing factions, which were joined by a multitude of other actors (you know, if the guys you dont like are joining or you think they might join one of the blocks, you have to go towards the other one). Because these were no monolithic blocs the whole civil war didnt blow up like syria or iraq or even the anti-gadaffi civil war.

The Unity Government was supposed to unite the two rival governments, but only some factions in these blocs agreed to it (among them Misrata, the most powerful green faction which thus morphed from 'evil islamist forces' to 'heroic freedom fighters who battle isis in sirte') .
But the central red government didnt join the Unity Government (while multiple red factions did join), so there is still conflict going on, especially with the Reds -who had failed hard during the last years- suddenly takening a bit of clay and looking a little less incompetent.
The UN and the west kinda supported the Red Government, but now has switched towards Unity and is against Red again.

I have no idea what Dark Green is supposed to be, yellow are Tuareg shits (and much of the southern red part is just as well controlled by the local desert tribes), while White (jihadis and radical islamists) have a lot more influence then the map is trying to show.
