I also have a knife by CM, he's a good guy. Can be a bit of an edgelord try hard but I guess when you're a rehabilitated meth addict you get a pass on that shit.

Pick related was my favorite knife. Lost it recently so I gotta buy another

Why is it always something like this in knife-guys' history. Are they into knives because they're not allowed to own guns?

Guys I'm looking for a multi-tool that has a knife that can easily, onehandedly be deployed.

Actually looking at some Leatherman products now, I may have changed my mind about their prices.
I'm looking for an EDC knife and some minor tools,

Does anyone have any experience with this ?

I got a Wingman. Got it on sale at Home Depot, after I'd gotten my brother a Sidekick for Xmas, and getting real jelly of it. They're basically the same construction, just a few differences in tools. They're built nice and tough. Hasn't really failed me once. For the price, I don't think you can do much better, really.

Didn't think I'd see other CM knife owners here. He's a character for sure, but he's a good dude and his knifemaking skills are getting better.

>>32324311
CM just really likes knives. Him not being allowed guns and being a knifemaker just means he favors knives even more.

>>32324318
Depends on the knife. I got mine for around $325 with shipping, but I live like 3 hours from him and don't have to cough up as much for shipping. I also have to mention his quick turnaround. He made my knife in like 2-3 weeks, which is pretty ridiculous by custom standards.

>>32327912
Opinel: $12
Rat 1/2: $30
Byrd: $20-30
Mora: $10-20

That should get you started.
>>
Are Glock knives any good
>>
is the buck 110 anygood?
>>
>>32328116
They're cheap and durable, but they aren't amazing knives for anything other than stabbing things.

52 HRC means they're soft as shit, and you'll see significant dulling and/or edge rolling with hard use, requiring constant upkeep to keep sharpened.

That said, you'd be hard-pressed to snap, crack or chip one without intentionally trying to destroy them.

If you're looking for a solid survival knife, I'd suggest a Mora in that price range (~$30), or an ESEE/Becker-Kabar in the $100 range if you can afford it.

If you're looking for a cheap knife to shank trees with, throw around, baton boards/sticks, cut wires/abrasives, or generally abuse or use it in a situation you wouldn't want to risk your favorite knife in, it could suit you well.

500 bucks is a lot of money for a knife. To each their own. I have a TOPS BOB and it's my most expensive knife and it sees the most use. Don't know why someone would spend that much on a blade

Salutations, anons. I have a relative who is outdoorsy and this year for Christmas, I want to get him a cool knife. Something that takes an edge and keeps and edge, and looks good (damascus steel swirl is very cool), and will stand up to real use. My budget is 200 dollars.

The knife is great, was sceptical because of the modified scandi grind but it cuts amazingly well. One thing that is stupid is that you can't use the beCk if your knife to strike your fire steel (I use a lighter so not that big of a deal just weird) and the divot in the handles for now drilling work great, don't know why it needs one on each scale but it works good either way, don't like all the advertisements on the blade though but I'm working on taking it off with acetone . I'm looking at getting a wolfe custom leather cross draw sheath made, this is my go to knife if I'm outside doing /out/ activities
>>
>>32328927
Back* sorry I'm on my phone. Also the scales are much beefier and longer than esee, esee scales are too small this is a big thing for me because I have big hands

On my Esee's, I just take off the factory scales, just make my own micarta ones for my hand size.

Don't know why ppl will spend like 50 on some scales, they're so easy to make, doesn't cost much at all.

Hey /ktg/ I'm thinking of having a knife I drew up commissioned but know fuck all about knife steel.

The design is basically a slightly upsized full tang Fairbairn-Sykes dagger with a 7.5 inch blade and a rounded rectangular cross section handle.

Any recommendations for blade steel?

Also, has anybody done something similar before and have a specific shop to recommend?
>>
>>32331803
>Any recommendations for blade steel?
Honestly blade steel isn't as much of a big deal as it's made out to be and most average people can barely tell the difference anyway. I would just ask the maker you plan on using for their opinion on what steels they prefer and what they think would be best for the intended use of the knife.

I've worked with two custom knifemakers before. Matt Freeman (aka Charlie Mike, the CM people have been talking about in this thread) does fast, decent work for relatively affordable prices. He's more of a hobbyist knifemaker, but he's gotten a lot better over the years and the stuff he's making nowadays is fairly clean and practical. The guy is a character as mentioned, but a good guy to work with.

I've got two knives from J.W. Bensinger that I'm fond of. He does good work with historical designs, so I think he'd be more up your alley if you're going for a Fairbairn-Sykes design. Great knifemaker, really knows his stuff. I honestly think he could charge more considering the quality of his knives.

You can see Matt Freeman's work on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2FLcHdcTJ8bAaGwTLTQ3pA

and J.W. Bensinger's work on Facebook (which I would link but 4chan thinks it's spam, so just search for it).

So I picked up the new Spyderco Spydiechef yesterday, and I am honestly blown away by how thin the factory grind on this thing is.

Now, mind you, I looked at all five my local store got and deliberately picked the one that was thinnest behind the edge, but still.

Stock measurements were:
Spine: 0.113"
1/4" behind the edge: ~0.030"-0.035" thick (literal custom knife territory)
1/32" behind the apex: ~0.015" thick (close to custom territory)

To give you an idea of how thin that is behind the edge, pic related is *after* I reprofiled the edge bevel angle to ~10 degrees per side.

This is probably the first modern production folder I've ever seen with a truly high performance cutting geometry (the Nilakka doesn't count because s30v is a ridiculously bad choice for the application).

It's tougher than shit at extremely high temperatures and can be made thinner than steel or titanium with the same strength (afaik).

I can and do edc fixed blades, but if hes new to knives, hes more likely to clip.one to his pocket than to loop one on his belt

Combat knives are generally meant for stabbing and slashing. As a result, they tend to have poor blade geometry for cutting and slicing, and handles that are conducive to combat use. And the guard gets in the way. For actual usable knives, check out things like the woodlore, skookum, temagami, lagom, lt wright genesis, ltwk/bhk bushcrafter, etc.

Traditional scandinavian knives are also a good place to look. If you want something more tactical, try falkniven a1, s1, cold steel master hunter, jp peltonen sisipuukko, etc.

If you really want to go tactical, something designed by Harsey (crk, spartan blades - both expensive beyond reason, and less than ideal for actual use)

Posted in other thread but Ka-bar is not a good woodsman's knife. It's not the best innawoods knife and most marines wouldn't choose it for backpacking.

If you get a ka-bar because he wants a ka-bar then make sure you get a ka-bar brand ka-bar because they're better. The case brand ka-bar is not of as good a quality.

Now what would be a better knife? A bushcraft knife in a leather sheath would be a better choice such as Helle of Norway.

No problem. I missed the part where you mentioned wanting an ivory handled knife.

The reason you don't see them is mainly because of ivory bans. Modern knives typically have to source pre-ban ivory or uses stuff like fossil ivory, which drives up the costs. If you really want an ivory handled knife and don't want to pay custom prices, try looking in antique stores. You might see some old slipjoints in rough condition, but they'll be decent working knife after cleaning them up.

Some kitchens are tougher than others... just kidding, its mostly a mix of kitchen and shorter breaking knife for butchering animal carcases,
I just make the odd custom knife here and there for fun so it'll never be like mass-manufactured stuff, that's why its got things they don't bother with like a fuller to knock a bit of weight out for perfect balance, sub-hilt to help with grip/protect the users hand from slipping and that english steel! Boy is it one of the nicest blade steels I've ever worked with, chopped halfway through a 3" pine beam and its still razor sharp, took a couple of busted prototypes to get the heat treat and tempering just right but I've got it figured it out now.

There are some truly unfortunate karambit knockoffs out there.

Most of them are of course meant to be legal for carry, which means no double edges. But the problem there is you lose a lot of the damage mechanics that make the karambit an actual effective weapon. Instead you get a comically exaggerated wharncliffe knife with a novelty finger ring.

That said, I liked Emersons design, reduced but still functional.

Included is a custom design i still use for EDC. pretty much of questionable legality but Ive literally never been questioned about it.

I think the closest competitor is the Kershaw Skyline.

Both are the same weight, same closed length, same thickness, and same blade stock thickness.

Blade steels are somewhat competitive, with better edge retention on the Delica but easier sharpening and probably more durability on the Skyline. The Delica is a hands-down win in terms of blade grind, at least for typical casual EDC tasks. On the other hand, you get a bit more blade length in the Skyline, and blade shape is a tossup.

I prefer pretty much everything about the Skyline that isn't edge-related. Flipper over hole, liner lock over back lock, and G10 over FRN. Opinions vary on all of these things though. It's also cheaper and made in the USA as opposed to Japan for the Delica. (Not that there's anything wrong with a Japanese product, of course.)

I guess it's worth mentioning, though, that the Delica gives you a huge range of options that the Skyline doesn't. It comes in a ton of colors and, if you want to spend more, various steels and grinds. It also has a huge aftermarket, and if so inclined you can turn a $60 Delica into a $200 semi-custom. I guess the Delica is sort of the AR platform of knives.
>>

For the record, the Spydiechef is one hell of a folding knife for EDC type tasks (cardboard, plastic, food prep, even whittling pine). I've been absolutely loving the thin edge geometry on this thing.

Also, LC200n steel at 10 degrees per side stropped on 30 micron CBN on leather (to create a convex microbevel) gets truly scary sharp, simultaneously having both higher pushcutting sharpness AND slicing aggression than a DMT EEF microbevel on the same steel.

Got to handle a Small Sebenza 21 yesterday. Thoroughly unimpressed.
>S35VN and titanium. Sounds great right? At $325 I half expected something semi premium like XHP, M390, Elmax, or something, but nope
>lockbar stick both when open and closed, extremely stiff to overcome detents
>felt like the blade was rubbing on the handle midway through the opening, felt gritty. Maybe just cuz brand new? Either way not pleasant
>thumbstud rides so close to the handle your thumb rims the ti the entire time, could potentially cause issues with gloves
>ergonomics were meh, felt like holding a chunk of metal, did not like the ti finish, felt like a powder coat. No finger choil and no recurved spine, not very many grip options
>pocket carry is mediocre. Clip really tight but also sticks out quite far, really hangs up on lip of pocket. Thicker and wider than my ZT0450 so took up more pocket space, very noticeable
>$325 fucking dollars for S35. I just can't get over that. S35 is great because it's cheap to manufacture, so there's no reason it should cost 2x the price of a ZT.
>aesthetics are meh. Looks like a block of grey metal. Blue thumbstud sticks out like a sore thumb. Overall utilitarian, not interesting to look at
>did I mention it's $325 for S35 steel?!
Literally the only nice things about it are the blade centering and the hollow grind. I mean yeah the finish is spot on, the blade is centered, and the grinds are even, but it still doesn't look or feel as good as it should be considering it's priced 2-3x higher than most brands. I guess it would be okay for a rich collector, but I value functionality, practicality, comfort, and aesthetics, none of which this knife is exceptional at. It's beaten in every way except tolerances by the ZT0450. A fucking $160 knife is objectively better than a $325 knife. Chris Reeve can choke on Tony Jimanez's dick for all I care. They're both overhyped money whores anyway.

This is the MOD Pattern RAF Survival knife. I swapped a $3.70 hat badge for it when I was working with the Blues and Royals many years ago.
It has been on every camping trip, fishing trip, hunting trip, exercise and operation I have since I got it.
It is beat up, worn down, mistreated, admired, insulted and a Gurka wanted to swap his kukri for it.
I have hammered it into cement block walls to be used as a climbing step, cut fire wood, tied to a stick to make a spear, cut wire, smashed car and truck windscreens, cut people with it, made shelters, dressed game and cut a birthday cake during a mortar attack. It is not sharp enough to shave with but it will slice through paper with out ripping it.
It is now on its fourth sheath.

It has never let me down.

The early Type-D from the 1950's is worth grabbing if you can ever find an original one as well. I'd imagine they're getting quite scarce considering most would be going on 50 at the youngest, but the blade steel in those is old Sheffield stuff and extremely tough.

I would only be concerned if you are talking about batoning, stabbing sheetmetal, prying, scraping, and other things you shouldn't be doing with a knife at all.

As a further example, I recently made a series of videos testing whether aluminium oxide and silicon carbide abrasives could be used on high hardness, high vanadium content steels and some of the testing including repeatedly twisting out of cuts into a bamboo chopstick.

Even in an extremely high hardness, high carbide content steel like Maxamet at ~68 HRC, the damage from deliberately abusive cutting into bamboo chopsticks was limited to microscopic apex chipping.

That should give some indication of how abusive the treatment of a properly made knife has to be to induce a gross failure.

Why don't you just smash a brick against whatever you plan to cut with that thing, it will be about as effective.
>>

Why are you being mean, dude
Quarter inch is the best thickness

This whole time I thought he meant he's not going to tape off his knife when cutting boxes. Reading comprehension is tough.

recently got this as a gift
How do I know if it's good steel or crap made to look like damascus?

It feels nice anyway
>>
>>32363717

weak bait.

Best all-round thickness for a bushcraft/survival knife is 1/8''. 3/32 if you know what you're doing. Only time thicker knives make any sense is with a full size kukri.

I hate to have to say this, but that knife is complete garbage. I wouldn't trust it as anything more than a paperweight.

LC200n is really cool, sort of akin to a nitrogen version of AEB-L because it only has 0.3% carbon and 0.5% nitrogen, meaning virtually none of the chromium ends up forming carbides (same idea as AEB-L), resulting in a very fine grained steel hardenable to ~60-62 HRC and yet is as corrosion proof as H1.

to create a weak point during the heat treat so your knife will fail when you need it most.

Kek, just throw it in a display case so you don't offend your friend and so you have something neat to look at. If you want a decent fixed blade, look no further than ESEE or Ontario

Maybe for a baton knife or a display piece. For $60, I think your money is better spent on a Cobra Steel Kindjal, for both general tom-foolery, display, and sword practice. But if you just want something to make a handle for, by all means.

No, not even close. For the price of a BOB you can buy a genesis, or something from bhk, etc. that are way better than tops. That's what killed tops for me - they have some very decent knives, but their price range is the same as makers such as lt wright and others that tops just cannot compete with.

Ontario, ka-bar, esee, TOPS are some of the best knife companies that money can buy, made in USA. I would look into these companies.

as for the price range, KA-BAR classic USMC is one of the greatest knives ever to exist. Don't get me wrong, there are better knives. But the classic is an extremely functional tool. It's a good allrounder for under 100 bucks and it will last 45 years of hard use. a decent survival knife.

it's also got the leather sheath you're looking for.
never get serrated edge. This is a huge nono.

But I would totally recommend as a survivalist getting this knife as a gift. It's money well spent.

same company, bk39 is a beast of a survival knife. it will cut a mans arm off.

I know most of guys are complete idiots, but I'm hoping for some advice from some outdoors-men.

listed at 35% off.
