Is there a point in being buffed as a soldier?

I've been reading about Long Range Desert Group and SAS operations in WW2 - men recruited from farmers, and previous explorers, very effective.

Yet I noticed something that caught my eyes many times before, when looking at hardcore killers from WW2, regardless which side - none of them are pumped, some would even come out as skinny by today's standards.
Even Robert "Paddy" Mayne, hardcore killer, a known drunk and brawler, who once ripped out dashboard from Italian airplane with his bare hands, to keep it as a "suvenier", doesn't look too muscular.
Those ware some hard men, able to walk 300km through desert and not die.

So maybe being muscular is overrated?
It would seem that psychological and physical endurance is much more important.
And by the way - does being muscular require higher consumption of food and water on daily basis?
Tactically wise, when resources are short (especially water), this could be a big disadvantage.

Muscle would require more calories, not water, and that's only to maintain. Remove the calories and they will lose muscle mass. So what?

Strength would be more important than size. Muscle does not hurt in any situation, so long as you fit in your vehicle.
>>
>>32322013
Muscular bodies along with any overly large/tall bodies aren't ideal for soldiers. Now lean, fit men, true ottermode men make for much better soldiers.
>>
>>32322013
If you compare it to WWII, we have more and cheaper food and better logistics. We also have comparably far more missions where endurance indeed doesn't matter much. And then of course, a super buff guy is more recognizable and more physically imposing than a super enduring one who basically looks like your average joe if you don't know what to look for, so these will be overrepresented in the media.
>>
>>32322024
>That's not an excuse to not run and eat cheetos fatty. Put down the spoon and pick up the heavy stuff.

I run 7km in 40minutes every second day and I never touch cheetos or other feces food, you fuck.
The point of my post wasn't about being fat or out of shape, on the contrary.
>>
>>32322013
Yes, being overly muscular is actually a downside since it burdens your cardiovascular system. Just like everything else in life, it warrants having some sort of measure and not going way off the center in either way (being too buff or being a fat slob). Another example would be that nobody likes a douchebag but nobody likes a doormat either.

A long time. I'll give you some food for thought. Those guys who were here back then left a long time ago and got on with their lives. The only exception being a few freaks that are obviously damaged in the head.
>>
>>32322013
these men didn't have modern fitness training knowledge, and probably only truly excelled in effort / skill and willpower.

many but not all SOF are jacked guys, who hit the gym as both a requirement and a hobby, but skill and mental fortitude will always be most important.

And with the insane conditions and volume of work connected with WWII soldiering.
Between the accumulated experience of the unit and the low life expectancy, only the best had the opportunity to even be a soldier long enough to make special forces.

But cardio is underrated as a combat necessity more practical than size, although size and strength is also definitely a supremely important attribute when your job is a fight to the death between men.

Its like investing in your body makes it a better quality weapon, although your rifle will always be your main weapon and having a stronger body doesn't really benefit your weapon handling at all, and causes your body to use more energy to function, and making you heavier.

People also don't realize that you actually need to go out of your way to put on mass, and you can strength train at a serious level without substantial gains.

hope this post makes sense to people
>>
>>32322013
if you do bodyweight stregth training you can get to a really advanced strength level and stay fairly skinny, but its also very easy to modify whatever level you are on of an exercise to focus on developing size.

Being skinnier can have benefits in movement and climbing ability, so long as your are still strength training.

I guess its just about your personal body preference, so long as you are fit and healthy and strong.
>>
>>32322240

Pretty much what this anon said.

During my service I also noticed that skinnier and lighter guys generally did better in PFTs but brawnier ones were better during rucking and actual combat training.

>mass=/=muscle

your post doesn't really make sense,

But I think I understand what you mean.

Anyone can achieve substantial strength gains without mass gains, and some mass can be acquired without reaching a particularly advanced level of strength training.
But it just happens typically strength training and hypertrophy oriented training both positively benefit each other.

Bruce Lee was super strong, especially considering his small size, and because of his size and disproportionate strength he was inhumanly agile.

But if he encountered a fighter of equal skill (not that there would be one) and larger size, he would still have been at a disadvantage.

Strength relative to size and body weight can be whopping advantage, but as a general rule it is trumped by mass assuming proportionate strength.

Basically, what i'm saying is if two people where both equally strong proportionate to their weight, the heavier has an advantage.

It sounds simple, but if you you train enough to put on mass, odds are you train more and are stronger than a smaller person even if they also train.

The only real exceptions are rings gymnasts.
Whose upper body strength is typically absurdly disproportionate to their size.

More water will be required also.

If a human body is upwards of 80% water, and you've got a guy at 220+ pounds of muscle, he's going to lose a lot more water and need more replaced, when compared to a guy whose 150-180 pounds.

Also consider the fact that a lot of the soldiers in WW2 were children of the global depression. There was no rel welfare state in those days, growing up hungry was a real possibility especially in working class families from whom the majority of the enlisted men would have come. It definitely effected some of them from a physical health point of view.

Sof depends on the team. They all go to the gym. But I've seen green berets who were all normal, mildly athletic looking guys. If they told you they occasionally ran, or did crossfit you wouldn't be surprised. Obviously though they were in top tier shape and could pt my dick off without trying.

The green berets that replaced them though...Holy shit. It was hilarious being in the gym with them. All of them were huge, obviously juicing, spent 40% of the time complimenting each other, 45%time spent touching each other, remainder was actually lifting.

Guy you replied to here,

i use the nike run app on my cell phone, it uses your gps location and calculates your distance/speed in a semi real time.

If you are on a relatively straight run its great, or on a curved track its great.

It fucks up if you have to take a left then right turn constantly every 5 feet and you'll get a shitty result. Go to a high school track (when no kids are there unless youre Zed) or just run innastreet. Its great.

Read something articles by knowledgeable strength and conditioning coaches who have science backgrounds.

It's important to remember that what most people think constitutes 'training' is more-so just exercise. Genuine physiological training routines are far less likely to use terms like 'cardio' or 'weight lifting' or even 'strength training' and are far more likely to use things like 'anaerobic and aerobic capacity', 'anaerobic alactic vs lactate', 'strength endurance', 'anaerobic strength', 'aerobic strength' and generally look at things in terms of energy systems rather than separate things into this idea of 'cardio' or 'strength'. If you have a head for science you should really look into it, because once understood its very easily applied and very beneficial.

The most general consensus for military athleticism is this:

>Low intensity, long duration cardio should be the bulk of any CV training (heart rate in 130-150 bpm range during training,1-3 hours in duration, should be strongly prioritized until resting heart rate is < 55 bpm)

>Additional CV work should consist of a mixture of intensities and duration, biased toward the anaerobic energy end of the spectrum to offset the large bulk of aerobic work. This is a good opportunity for specificity (ie. DA units should have a good chunk of high intensity intervals to simulate things like climbing a wall or running from cover to cover)

>Strength training should focus on the legs, hips and trunk. Maximal strength and strength endurance are both important but specificity should be applied (unit that walks 50km over a mountain vs unit that needs to climb up the side of a ship using a rope)

>Increase in muscle surface area is usually a consequence of training rather than an objective. Some people will develop high muscle density unintentionally and others won't. The affect of increased muscle density on cardiac output is over exaggerated and more mass can be beneficial for rucking.

A lot of them probably were buff before the war. The human body however, is naturally meant to be more lean. Under a lot of physical stress, and if you aren't doing "buff guy" exercises regularly, the human body becomes lean and more endurance based rather than "I BENCH 400 LBS BRO"

As a soldier, it is hard to maintain your buff bro gains if you are not sitting in a base eating and working out all day.

If you look at OP, almost all of them have great looking musculature that was from a life of work. Just look at the biceps-shoulders. The issue that the modern world faces, is an overabundance of food given to children when they are small so they grow up fat, and their body metabolism is fucked.

The answer to this, is body building for most people since its normal and highly available to all and puts a huge caloric deficit up to maintain. However, the actual workout itself doesn't do very much. A furniture mover working 40hrs a week would burn 3k-4k calories a day EASY with upwards of 5k if they were busting their ass.

Historically, large and muscular soldiers have always been at a disadvantage.

Their own armies preferred to put the big guys on the heavy weapons, which made them prime targets. In WWII these guys had to carry the automatic rifles, machine guns, flamethrowers, etc. These individuals had a noticeably higher casualty rate than regular line infantry.

The other place they were noticeably disadvantaged was in prisoner of war camps. POWs were regularly starved and extremely malnourished. Death by starvation was common. Tall and broad men in particular died first, because their bodies just required more calories to keep going. Prisoners in the Russian Stalag camps received an average of 700 calories per day. Under these conditions a man's body efficiency is a huge factor in his overall survivability.

Although it hasn't happened in US military history for a long time, many soldiers have had to fight under starvation conditions. Here too, bodily efficiency is extremely important. Once malnourishment sets in you loose energy and vigor, your thinking muddles, your reactions degrade, etc. Starvation has been cited as a significant factor for why the Stalingrad pocket was as bad as it was- at a certain point the army literally didn't have the energy to attempt a breakout and save themselves.
