Own both; prefer Mossberg 500.
I like traditional stocks on shotguns and the safety location of the Mossberg makes more sense for that. The dual extractors on the Mossberg is a plus, but a bigger deal in my opinion is the use replaceable ejector.
So long as you don't get an 870 Express either are fine though.

Winchest Model 12 by far the nicest shotgun ever, but sadly only takes lead so it's not practical these days.

That said, the Mossberg 590A1 takes the cake. The 18.5" with fluted heavy barrel, LPA trigger + metal assembly, +2 mag extension config is just perfect, then pick stock of your choice. Also the 14" barrel with the short handle grips are great

870 myself, but that's because I have a 70s Wingmaster that kicks New Remington's ass six ways from Sunday. Fit and finish are excellent, wood quality is superb, and it exudes quality.

However, if you are buying new, Mossberg is clearly the way to go; they are miles ahead of post-acquisition Remington, which is really a shame.

Pic related is nearly identical to mine minus the tube extension

Rem 870, accept no substitutes.

I've played with a couple of Mossies, and to a gun, everyone has had something wrong with it. Mostly wobbly furniture, poor fit and finish, unreliable extraction etc.

Mossbergs are a mess, best avoid them and ask your LGS about what Remingtons they have or can order in.

This comes down to preference but, as always, the 500 takes a very slight edge forward

>500
1. Basically the same shotgun as the 870, and similar price
2. Comes in a variety of configurations and prices. Super shorty, pistol grip/compact and stored in a boating/sealed tube for $300, magpul edition etc
3. Has slightly more 3rd party accessories, and easier to find
4. Better safety, ambi standard, but 870s is better if you use a pistol grip
5. Easy to mount optics. However, sights are better on the 870 (At least the ghost sights)
6. The magpull edition 870 comes with a proprietary barrel system, you cannot switch out barrels (And it's too short to do anything real, and too long for good indoor home protection). By comparison the 500 is much more customize-able

Virtually the same gun. The 500 simply costs slightly less to get it configured the way I want (Short and tactical and to switch out for a long bird barrel) so I prefer the 500.

The 590a1 shouldn't be purchased by anybody. They took the 590 to the navy, and the navy said "THE FUCK IS THIS? THINGS TOO DAMN LIGHTWEIGHT" so they took the 590 back, switched it out with the same but bulkier and heavier (By like a fucking pound) receiver and called it the 590a1. The navy couldn't have been happier.
>>
Freedom group bought Remington and the quality went to shit.
I've seen it with 3 new Remington 870s in person.
Failures to extract right out of the box.
Buddy said it "needed a break-in period" and that it needed lube.
Which is funny because the week before, I went shooting with my dad and his brand new Mossberg 590 and went through a couple hundred shells with zero malfunctiona.
And I myself have two mossberg 500s.
1 being a 20 gauge that I bought brand new which still has yet to malfunction
My other mossberg 500 is a 35 year old police trade in 12 gauge that I've yet to see malfunction.

I'd go with mossberg. Since they work.
>>
>>32321265
This is a good point, any Remington made before Freedom group bought them out is going to be an excellent shotgun.
If you're buying new, get a mossberg.

It's honestly kind of difficult to pick a favourite on this one. I've owned and used a Maverick and 500 longer, my first shotgun was an 88, and I currently have one set up with a pistol grip for STALKER reasons. Never had trouble with them and love them, however I've shot a 3.5'' Remington 870 and it was fun and worked very well, and I just recently bought a Grizzly magfed shotgun, a Chinese Remington copy, and it's working fine, I'm really liking it.

I think I may have to say ultimately the Maverick 88 is my favourite out of all of them, I like how light the damn things are, it was my first shotgun, and I never had problems with them. Plus my biggest gripe about the 500 is the safety placement, it never felt right to me, perhaps because I started on a Maverick, but I like the safety placement a lot better on it.

>>32321922
The adjustable stock on your Mossberg is the ATI one, right? I just put one on my Grizzly, they're comfy as fuck.

>>32322810
I'm not sure what the fuck is going on with this gun. But I like it.

Do you guys have any ideas on how to fit the 590 for chokes? I have my mind on one for fun with the bayonet and because a shotgun is generally nice to have, but I'd also like to be able to tune it a little bit for hunting and trap shooting.
I see lots of people saying it's thick enough to thread for chokes, and it doesn't look like the 590 can fit barrels from the 500 on account of the lugs in different places.
If you want to suggest a replacement barrel, I implore you to keep in mind that I'm a European, and that buying anything from a US-based company will turn really painal really fast, economically speaking.

>>
>>32322780
To be fair, Mossberg wobble IS a thing.

It's just a feature, not a bug.

Literally never experienced the other two he's talking about.

>otoh my Mossbergs are 27 and 50 years old, respectively

Still going strong too. Fight me faggots.

Also 590A1 a shit. The 50YO gun above is still in factory condition bar the stock, and is going strong, even with its """""weaker""""" polymer FCG and thinner barrel. It's got a half-century of getting the fuck beat out of it under its belt, and I'm NOT nice to it.

And ghost ring sights are inferior to a bead for most applications you'd use a shotgun.

If you want a 590 for muh capacity, go for it. If you want a 590A1 because "muh milspec" just be aware that they overbuilt it because grunts are fucking retards who will find a way to break ANYTHING. The only tangible benefit I can think of is all that extra weight limiting recoil.

It's some "stamped vs milled AK" shit: one is stronger, but not in a way you're ever gonna actually benefit from. All you're ever gonna notice as an end-user is the extra weight.
>>
>>32324167
Considering one of the big selling points of a shotgun is its versatility, and that semis will inherently cycle differently depending on what load you put through them?

He meant that he has a mossberg and wants to know if he should get a barrel with the capability to accept the 8 round mag or not. The barrel attaches to the magazine on 500s so in order to get a larger mag you need a barrel made for that mag. No guns retard.

>>32324896
Go with the 16.5
>>
>>32321093
870. Ergos fit me better and I'm used to the safety placement.

Take care of your shit and even a new-production Express will last the rest of your life.
>hurr but which one would you go to war with?
Neither, that's what intermediate-caliber carbines are for. And this coming from a guy who carried a 590 during "war", it got used almost exclusively for door breaching (which it sucked at). The only time I shot anything other than a door with it was trying to longball a jackal out innadesert with 00buck. Never hit it because military buck patterns like ass.
>>
>>32324896

>home defense

Ideally, a double stamped AR or AK with as many rounds as you can manage without compromising safety and maneuverability.
>>
>>32321093
>not 590

>>
>>32321192
Nothing really. I've been using an 870 express magnum for over a decade and I've never had an issue that didn't stem from cheap ammo
>>
>>32324986
590 is considerably more expensive than either
>>
>tfw 930

I deburred, cleaned, and lubricated it when I got it, and so far it cycles low brass trap loads just fine.

>>32324954
No, he said he was "considering" a 500, and did not realize that you can't actually put a 20" barrel on a 500 to "get the 8-round capacity".

If he meant he was considering buying a Mossberg with a 20" and an 8rd tube, that would've made sense.

Also a 16.5" barrel is an NFA item, my noguns friend. Fairly sure he meant 18.5".

Either way the post was nonsense and your lack of experience with Mossman 5000s is pretty evident as you advised him to buy an SBS for HD.

Mossberg
Pros: i prefer the position of the slide release and the safety. I also like the fact that the trigger group is sturdier
Cons: to extend the capacity of the tube you need a new barrel

870
Pros: dat old school feel. can add an extension on the tube magazine without changing barrels
Cons: safety and slide release location

That being said i do like my mossberg a little bit better than my 870

that was me and my buddy's first shotguns. we had found one each from different people in the same week for almost nothing.

they were beat to shit and mine had broken action bar, and the little screw for the shell thing was missing, and his had a fucked up extractor.

they looked like utter shit, and were rough as fuck till we let this old gunsmith work on them as a labor of love, and partially because he cleared some land for him. this was late 90's, i bought mine for $50 in 1997, and sold it to my grandfather for I think $250 since it had been refinished and looked really sharp. that old guy was a damn good gunsmith and did right by us.
>>

You are just jealous because yours has serial numbers.
>>
>>32325008
>over a decade

Exactly, I had one for 14 years and it was fine unless I put crap ammo in it and the extractor couldn't handle it. The finish also developed rust no matter what I did to it. The real problems are with models made after 2007.

It's hard to find an action smoother than the 870's but the Mossberg was definitely more convenient for me being left-handed. The grip angle of the 870 also stopped feeling right to me so I traded it away.

the lop is easily adjustable due to the spacer system...

has ambi slots for loop-type slings and holes for magpul's quick-detach slings (magpul also offers an attachment for clip-type slings)...

has a cheek riser (sold separately) for use with optics...

is secured to the receiver via an easily accessible 1/4" hex head bolt...

weighs only a couple extra ounces compared to the factory polymer...

the grip angle is comfortable and versatile... however, it is quite unique & i recommend fondling one before purchasing...

its a very good stock.. i personally prefer the factory ergos

Not even that. I don't think even muhreen retard strength would break a 590. The 590A1 only exists because brass was afraid muhreen retard strength MIGHT break a 590.

I'm not saying 590A1s are bad. I'm just saying that their """""upgrades""""" over the 500 and 590 are completely unnecessary and an excellent example of the military using something not making it better.

My buddy likes his Hawk 982 better than his 2010 870.

i have one that is an americana special, it us very light and fun to shoot clays left and right handed with it.

however it has some design issues, and the one ive got some retard torqued the barrel the wrong way and fucked up the mag tube at the end. still shoots like a dream, but kinda sad someone didnt care about this one. I guess if you ordered 20 or so shotguns from ithica at once they gave you an americana for free.

I have a 590A1 and i love it it seems to recoil less than any other 12 gauge i have shot. It might be to the heavy barrel keeping the barrel from rising as much but im not sure.

I have a 1300 also but it seems light duty for some reason. I dont know if its because of the rotating bolt or what. Also the grip is to fucking fat and i have big hands

>You guys are pussies because I want to carry unnecessary weight for no benefit.

Once again, spoken like someone who's never had to actually burn miles with weight.

You can call me a pussy all you want but I hike a LOT with weight, professionally, and I don't know anybody in my line of work who would go with a more expensive, heavier option that isn't actually more durable than the cheaper, lighter option.

I actually don't know if the 590A1 being better is fuddlore or mall-ninja faggotry, or some unholy synthesis of the two, but good god does it bring the retards running.

What caliber is your ranch hand?

Congrats, you're bitching about 6oz. You are either a woman or just climbed your way out of Auschwitz. That is 3/4 a cup of water. That is nothing in the grand scheme of things if you pack smart and don't hump a pack that is at or exceeding your weight limit it will not make a damn bit of difference.

I'm not "bitching about six ounces." I'm saying the 590A1 isn't more durable and doesn't perform any better than a 500 or 590 and only a fucking retard would prefer a heavier option for no tangible benefit. The actual weight difference is irrelevant.

The whole point about "who cares about a few ounces" is a LOT of people care about a few ounces when carrying around weight is something they do regularly.

Since you're a fucking retard, you've managed to not actually argue with either of these points in any of your posts.

So probably you should kill yourself.

I've seen countless 870 clones, almost as many 37 clones and even a few 1300 clones but never a 500.
Do they exist? The patent on the remington model 31 isn't getting any more expired.
Did mossberg outcompete them by making their own clone in the maverick 88?

I am 5'7" 105 lbs
a jug of milk is heavy for me
should I buy a Mossberg?
>>
>>32342535
That depends, how well do you take recoil?
One of the main advantages of a heavy shotgun is recoil absorption
>>
>>32321121
Pretty much this.

I like how much easier my 870 is to take appart and reassemble, and the old wingmasters action is nice and smooth, but otherwise I have to go with my mossman.

I wouldn't even consider a new 870 express.
>>
>>32334480
i guess i can't speak for post-2007 models as I've been using one 12ga (my 870 express mag) my whole life. if you get a chance to fingerfuck the one you'd buy beforehand, you can probably weed out most of the dogs without firing a shot.
as for the finish, i guess that's the operating hazard for budget guns? my gun's definitely not the prettiest after a decade of hunting/skeet shooting, but some basic maintenance 2x a year goes a long way.
i understand the ergos thing though, if it's not comfy you're not going to want to shoot it. different strokes for different folks

>Did mossberg outcompete them by making their own clone in the maverick 88?
That's my guess. It's kind of hard to go lower than the ~$200 ask price on a Maverick without completely sacrificing quality, even if you do farm the labor out to China.

it a cheap chinese copy of a M9 bayonet. They just branded it S&W
