I really wonder though, what happens when all the bullets off the shelf are gone? Bullets are the easiest part to manufacture, casings not so much (lots of purpose built industrial stamping machines required). Would you have to figure out how to make smokeless powder and primer? Primer isn't as hard as making the smokeless though. Smokeless powder is incredibly volatile when it is manufactured (stuff like nitroglycerin is used which is very sensitive). You might have to take control of munitions factories to resupply the hungry guns of the wasteland. It might give a edge to trading and give a bullet economy even.

Ah, now we're REALLY talking long-term. Honestly, I think CARTRIDGES would be off store shelves within days. Weeks at most. Literally ask ANYONE what their 'zombie plan' is, and the VAST majority of them will have something along the lines of 'looting/scavenging'. As for boxes of bullets though, yeah, those will last longer since not everyone knows how to reload, but they WILL run out eventually, and when they do, we will essentially be reverted back to the late 1800s because who on Earth knows how to make jacketed bullets? Lead bullets are only good to use within something like 1400 ft/s or something like that, I hear. Too much velocity and the rifling would either get clogged up REALLY fucking quick, or the soft lead simply won't be able to grip the rifling at such pressure/heat. So either we'll have to use REALLY heavy bullets for rifle ammo to slow things down, or intentionally lessen how much powder we use. Either way, assault rifles and self-loading full-sized rifles will essentially become a thing of the past, even if you still have smokeless powder and primers.

I believe that, at best, once the smokeless powder and primers have dried up, knowledgeable individuals will resort to making black powder in the historic way with feces, stale urine, and time. You don't need sulpher, I hear. Just KNO3 and charcoal (I know how to make charcoal) can give you some basic black powder. It probably won't be very good quality, but it'll get the job done. As for how to fire it; matchlock or flintlock. I've been thinking though about how to MAKE primers. What if you ground up some flint, mixed it with black powder, then mix it with high-strength alcohol to dilute it, pour it into a primer with the anvil already in place, and let dry? Strike anvil, flint sparks, ignition.

The purpose of diluting it to make it a liquid is so that it coats the anvil and inner shell of the primer, hopefully sticking to it when dry to prevent it from coming loose and possibly pouring into the casing itself. Use casted lead bullets and black powder in the casings. If I'm right, and the flint fragments will make sparks upon striking the anvil in the primer with a firing pin, which will then detonate the powder that had been wettened with alcohol that's around 57.1% or stronger (I think that's the point at which black powder will still burn), then it SHOULD be able to ignite a charge in a casing. I would HEAVILY advise against using black powder in self-loading firearms that have a gas system of any kind for even if it DID run, I doubt it would run for long. ESPECIALLY not an AR-15. Recoil-operated? Maybe, though I dare say it wouldn't take long for the locking surfaces to get gummed up, rendering it a jam-o-matic.

In the end, stick to manually-operated firearms. Bolt, lever, pump, straight-pull, and so on. Even single-shots like the Martini-Henry, Springfield M1873 "Trapdoor", or what have you. It'd be better than a bow and arrow, though I believe the vast majority of survivors will revert to that in time since the method of making black powder, let alone how to make primers, is a skill that VERY few people even KNOW about let alone POSSESS. Yeah I have some basic knowledge, but I've never put it into practice. It would probably take me years before I could perfect the process of making black powder, and the process of reusing primers is still hypothetical at best.

In industry it's drawn (extruded with presses), similarly like casings, into an elongated shape that the core is placed into and drawn. Black powder is easy as long as you can source sulfur. (it's not necessary unless you're going to be using flintlocks though, the main role of sulfur in black powder is lowering the ignition temp.) Though It would take a a good year or two for you to make a niter bed that produces. Shit and corpses take a long ass time to decompose enough. Though if you know someone with a lot of animals like pigs, cows and horses, you could in theory have limitless supply of nitrates by making their farm into a niter bed.


i don't know about making primers. mercury fulminate is easy enough in theory, just mix mercury with a nitric acid. but beyond that i don't have a clue. I don't like playing with shock sensitive explosives.

That's the thing; if you're going to include sulphur, that's going to make things more difficult in the long run. So without it, the powder won't burn as easily/quickly, which will likely also result in lower velocity in shorter barrels, but it's better than nothing.

You're thinking too much about ideal components; if we're talking post-apocalyptic with loss of civilization and BILLIONS of deaths, then talking about getting actual manufacturing plants up and running along with getting the ideal chemical compounds such as sulphur and 'mercury fulminate' is pretty much just a waste of time. Simplicity, and using 'whatever will work' is what we need to go by. KNO3 can be produced, as can charcoal (basically roast it in a paint can or something like that over a fire), but sulphur? To my knowledge the only way to get that is via scavenging/looting (that's a short-term strategy), and by mining the stuff. It can be mined, right? Whatever the case, you may as well forget about it if we're talking long term.

I figure before a method of primer manufacturing will be figured out, we'll have to resort to matchlock/flintlock muskets. While those are in use, caps/primers will be tinkered with and tested. Likely using spent primers to experiment with. I think combining black powder and flint fragments in a formula mixed with alcohol (which is another ingredient that can be home made though would require quite a large vegetable garden) allowed to dry in a primer casing with a steel anvil already inserted, could be a viable method. If black powder can still burn when made wet with high strength alcohol, then hopefully it'll still burn once it dries. The purpose of making it wet in the first place is simply to make sure the flint fragments and black powder is spread out well, and will hopefully stick to the anvil once dried.

It's probably also best to stick to revolvers instead of self-loading pistols. Like semi-auto rifles, I fear the powder residue will gum it up.

most of the sulfur we have today is a biproduct of how we refine natural gas, but from my understanding before the industrial revolution it was mostly gathered via volcanic activity. through hotsprings or things like that. though Sicily has a shitload of sulfur mines. Not sure about that, i wouldn't know until it was tried. but the reason sparks come off of steel when struck by a flint (or other hard material) is because Iron (and thus steel) is pyrophoric.

Isopropyl alcohol (go to strength being between 80 and 90 percent) is used as a better alternative to water for mixing your ingredients. When you mix potassium nitrate and sulfur with a pestle, you're essentially shoving the nitrate and sulfur into the pores of the charcoal.

It's considered the better alternative because it dries much faster than water. The longer your powder stays moist the worse your powder will turn out.

Oh I don't know if a mixture of flint fragments and black powder will work either. This is the kind of shit people would be thinking about in an apocalyptic situation though. I mean, once you're stable enough to have a permanent residence of sorts, with a lot of food stored, your defences in good order, and all that kind of stuff. Once you eventually have TIME on your hands, you can start tinkering. For primers, that would be my first try. Take a spent primer, punch the dent out, make sure the anvil is in good working order, mix some powder and flint fragments in as high an alcohol content as I can manage, then let the mixture dry in the primer pocket with the anvil. Once dry, put it in a casing, chamber the empty casing, and pull the trigger. I've fired a casing with just a primer before, so yeah, I'll know if the primer went off.

Steps will also be in the process of making a matchlock and/or flintlock musket though. I figure it's actually probably best that, if the process of making simple KNO3/charcoal black powder can be made, the next most important step is making a muzzle loader. If I can't get primers working, then I want to make sure I've got SOMETHING that will be able to use the powder I'm making. Likely start with a matchlock since that's piss-easy, then tinker with flintlocks and primers at the same time, whichever I feel like spending time on at the moment, likely going back and forth. Even if I end up figuring out a reliable way of making primers though, it'll always be good to have those muzzle loaders as back-up. Who knows, maybe I'll meet some guys who have no firearms and will be all too happy to trade stuff for muzzle loaders. I give them one or two along with some paper cartridges, and they promise to bring back some hunted meat.

I can then steadily trade them paper cartridges for things that I need, even developing simple socket or even plug bayonets if I hadn't have done so already.

Yeah, that's not long-term; I much prefer to stick to long-term ideas since most people who think about zombie survival seem to always think in short-term. Scavenging, looting, often specifically going for gun stores if they can, etc. That's no good. I do think a valid method of making primers can be figured out, but it's entirely possible that a long-term method won't be figured out for years, so it's possible that repeating manually-operated firearms will become a thing of the past for quite some time with only the most well-equipped of people getting muzzle loaders. I do think that we'll be able to hold onto black powder though. At least, some people will.

As for self-loading firearms, that will likely remain a thing of the past for generations. I have NO idea how to make smokeless powder, but I bet it's a VERY complex method that requires VERY specific ingredients that quite A LOT of scientific shit. I mean, black powder came about in China around, what, 600-800AD or so? Smokeless powder only came about in the 1880s, in France. So for over 1000 years, black powder was IT. That's over 50 generations of people. Over 50 generations of humanity that COULD have figured out the secret to modern smokeless powder, but didn't, until the late 19th century. So yeah, I think in a zombie survival scenario, it's entirely likely that once smokeless powder is gone, we won't see it for the rest of our lives... I should write more books on surviving the zombie apocalypse with more focus on long-term. Would make a fuckin' cool TV show I think, watching the generations of survivors come and go. 3.1. Concept of operation
3.1.1. Scheme of Maneuver

A Co will maneuver from the operations center in Port Blair to North Sentinel Island in secured boats and will move about North Sentinel Island on foot or with the aid of small motorized vehicles secured by the Vehicle procurement and maintenance team.

3.1.2. Formation

First formation will occur at the boat staging area just north of Constance Island and nightly formations will take place just before the evening mess in the center of the strongpoint.

3.1.3. Route

Members of A Co and its supporting elements will find their way to Port Blair, South Amandan individually, upon establishing an operations center in Port Blair and securing transportation for A Co, A Co will move by boat to North Sentinel Island and commence operations upon arrival.

The invasion force will approach and land on the Southeast corner of the island and land within the small inlet West of Constance Island (Marked on the topo map) and will stage a patrol base there until the area can be developed from a patrol base into a more fortified base of operations (all vegetation within 200m of perimeter cleared, Hesco Barriers surrounding the borders of the island 10m in from high tide water level and stacked to a height of 3m or greater from the ground, Barbed/Concertina wire barrier ringing the perimeter except for the ingress/egress route to the north at the base of the Hesco wall, Guard positions every 20m along the wall)

Following A Company’s establishment of a beachhead and while the body of A company begins building the base of operations, a platoon sized element will be sent onto the island to make note of any significant landmarks (ie. Freshwater sources, structures, suitable OP/LP/Patrol Base positions, etc.) and to find a freshwater source for A Company for use when filters and desalinization procedures become ineffective. Securing this freshwater source will be A Co’s first objective following establishment of the strongpoint at Constance Island.

After the strongpoint at Constance Island and the freshwater source are secured, A Co will endeavor to link the two, clearing and marking a path for freshwater transportation.

After the two positions are linked, platoons in A Co will conduct reconnaissance operations to determine the location and disposition of the enemy force if this is not already discerned. (It is suspected that the central enemy location will be located at the most elevated point on the island)

Following the discernment of the enemy’s location, a two (2) Platoon raid will be executed on their central location with the objective of shattering their will to fight and destroying their ability to resist A Co’s occupation. If the Platoons are unable to successfully occupy the enemy’s central location in force, they will aim to cause as much material and personnel damage as possible before returning to the strongpoint at Constance Island where they will rest as the other two platoons prepare for a counterattack.

After the raid on the central enemy location has been successfully executed and any counterattack has been repelled, A Co will begin counterinsurgency operations and sustainment operations.

Sustainment operations will focus on deforesting the southern parts of the island and development of the path between Constance Island and the freshwater source into a road as well as the formation of a second strongpoint on top of the freshwater source.

When sustainment operations have concluded, if counterinsurgency operations have not already concluded successfully, A Co will facilitate the ingress of sustainment teams onto the island strongpoints and will rotate its four (4) platoons between the two (2) strongpoints, at each strongpoint, one (1) platoon will be tasked with security and one (1) platoon will be tasked with counterinsurgency operations. Platoons will rotate positions on a weekly basis (Strongpoint A security > Strongpoint A counterinsurgency > Strongpoint B security > Strongpoint B Counterinsurgency > cont..) until it is judged that counterinsurgency operations have completely succeeded


All Supporting elements will remain in Port Blair until A Co finds fit to bring them to North Sentinel Island.

All Arms and ammunition will be brought by members of A Co. and are ideally to be chambered in the following calibers: 7.62x39, .45 ACP, 12 Ga

Other permissible calibers include: 5.56x45 NATO (or equivalent), 6.8 SPC, 300 AAC, 30-30, 7.62x51 NATO (or equivalent), 5.56x39, 7.62x54R, 9x19 Parabellum (or equivalent), .40 S&W, .357 magnum, .38 SPL, .44 Magnum, .44 SPL, 10mm Auto, .45 GAP, .7.62 Tokarev. (This list is not all inclusive)

Note: all members of A Co are encouraged to bring 600 Rounds for their rifle of choice (100 if shotgun) and 100 rounds for their pistol of choice, all in magazines. An additional 10,000 rounds will be brought in 7.62x39, 1,000 rounds in .45 ACP, 1,000 rounds of 12 gauge, will be brought as an emergency reserve.

All members of A Co are expected to bring their own firearm maintenance tools, as A Co’s reserve firearms are to be used only in an emergency and will be in very short supply (5 spare AK pattern rifles, 5 Spare 1911 type pistols, 10 Spare Mossberg 500 type shotguns)

4.1.4. Captured Materiel

4.2. Transportation

Transportation procurement will be the responsibility of the transportation procurement and maintenance team. Signal will occur primarily through radio traffic, vocal communication, and hand signals. Use of roadflares or chemlights in a “Buzzsaw” will be used a distress signal in the event of a failure of radio systems.

If A Co’s headquarters radios fail, a satellite phone will be used to coordinate the resupply or repair of HQ’s radios by support elements.
