Looks like the spring shot through the bottom of a base plate. Did this happen after the person shot with a barrel obstruction like a squib?

That's a blow out that happens after firing into a barrel obstruction. If you shoot enough you'll eventually get a squib round. If you shoot after a squib without clearing the barrel the gun may blow up.
I have seen maybe 10 squibs, almost all were reloads. I have seen 3 pistol blow up from squibs. 2 1911s and one M&P. All were destroyed but only the 1911s were salvageable for parts.
