A real rapier, not a dress rapier. They're not tiny light dancer swords, they're only slightly thinner than a longsword and actually end up heavier because they're longer.

A knife, because it's much lighter making it easier for you to run away and get a better weapon.

it still also depends entirely on what your opponent is using, if its a straight sword fight with a one handed weapon a Rapier is a good bet because it has a good range, but a heavier sword like a classic longsword could (in theory) work well against it with its added mass at the pointy end can knock a rapier aside quite easily

It depends on what you and your opponent is wielding and wearing, like any other kind of warfare and weaponry, swords changed with the times

skill also comes into play a lot and in any case l'd still want a shield more than anything else desu

i would have to go with a Hanger/Messer
short fast hack/slashing blade as my top, followed by a norse style Spatha for ascetic reasons.

the one really good Hanger I ever picked up was a joy to hold, perfect balance, not too heavy but heft enough to give it some authority.

the balance almost seemed to show you were the optimal point to strike someone on it was, and it almost begged to be swung. 200 + plus years old blade, and still sharp as a winter wind, and strong as old oak. it's part of the Oakshotte Collection in Minneapolis now-a-days

Rapier and longsword are somehow on par weight wise, besides, you don't seem to realize how fast a rapier can disengage. Knocking swords aside only works on people who don't know much swordsmanship.

A straight-up longsword (no shield) would be better if we're assuming full plate harness. At that point the shield is near-redundant and you're going to need to be grappling if you want to do serious damage.

Use the sword that you're the best with. Beyond that it's at best splitting hairs while you have a woolly mammoth to shave, and usually just a fanboy wank-off.

The espada ropera, where things largely begin, was indeed a rather lighter weapon than a full arming sword. But probably not all that light anyway, it's still a serious weapon that may easily be all that's keeping you alive, you just aren't expecting it to have to do that for hours against people in full armour.

Then as it develops into the rapier proper, it seems to slide back into being a sword for any occasion. It certainly isn't a particularly light sword, there are definitely light rapiers, but there are also heavy rapiers, and using what the Wallace collection had online when I grabbed the data the average ended up at 1.22 kg, a substantial amount for a single handed sword.

As for the people who'd use them, we see them brought to war by everyone from the common grunt to kings (and this at a time when they both, and all in between, may end up having to use them). We should be able to find healthy, strong and well trained people in that group, and given the number of instructional manuscripts and mentions of rapier fencing schools we have it seems to be one of the more serious serious training swords.
