It's caused by people trying to slide the slide release into place. You press it from above, not slide it under

If you aren't careful when you go to reinsert the slide stop, it's easy to rotate it along the frame or slide and leave a circular scratch.

You push the slide release straight in. If that's too much effort you can use a shim like a box cutter blade to push in the plunger before installing.

Twisting it in causes marks like pic related or similar semicircular marks on the slide. The idiot scratch.
