Do any of you reload for your M1 Garand? Is it worth it? What do you use to reload?
>>32293998
Garands are only designed to fire .30-06 ball ammo unless you get a ported gas plug. If you're going to reload 30-06 for it you'll need to reload it to the specs of the ammo your Garand is designed for unless you get the ported gas plug then you can adjust the rifle to fire higher or lower power 30-06.

there's the ported gas plug, it in theory provides more space to lessen the gas spike, which is more "install and forget it"
then there's the schuster screw plug, which you have to adjust for different loads.

Why not buy a M1A? Literally better in every aspect.

maybe he wants it for novelty?
>>32294358
I thought you had to adjust the ported gas plug for different loads too.

muh history.
and also price. Unless you're collecting, a service/field grade is $700
Springfield Inc M1A's all go over $1000

The ported plug is made by the guy behind Garandgear. He has interesting numbers and charts on gas pressure measurements on his site to back up his version of the plug.
I know Schuster also makes their offering of the ported plug. But their screw adjusted plug has been around longer so that's the plug everyone usually thinks of.

go to the bottom. There's more charts on ammo he's tested on a forum somewhere, forgot which forum, but much more data he's recorded there. Personally, while my rifle was able to chug through some hot factory loads, the recoil felt real stout and very noticeably different. But it does open up a lot of the less hotter factory ammo instead of just sticking to specific Garand loaded selection.
OP here. So if I install a garandgear gas plug, I can shoot any commerical ammo AND be able to reload myself?

Yeah, it would still probably be a good idea not to try anything really, really hot though. You'll be able to handle rounds hotter than standard Garand ammo; but don't go nuts.

I reload 30-06 to about M2 ball spec specifically for my M1. The go to handload to mimic M2 ball is max 49gr of IMR 4895 over a 150gr FMJ. Use with a harder primer due to the M1's free floating firing pin, CCI large rifle primer (#200) work perfectly fine.

Never heard of a garand rattling itself to pieces or stretching its reciever.

related question, will that gas plug work with the T37 Flash Hider?
my dad might give me his M1 and i don't wanna mess around finding safe ammo for it.
