Got a knife from my old great granddad's personal chest. he served in the pacific theater but traded it from some guy who served in Europe once he got back to Lawton/Fort Sill. The guy looted it off a dead German soldier.

That's insane. Nice SA symbol on the grip. Early party member or something, wow.

>it's one of the actual Long Knives
Hooooooooolyyyyyyyyyyy fuuuuuuuuck
OK, so my dad has one of these, which his dad brought back from the war, and seeing this post made me look up values.
I haven't seen it in years, and my dad's not sure where he stashed it, but I have very clear memories of it having a weird metal suspension chain instead of the little leather one.
Well, I just looked some stuff up, and apparently that would make it an SA LEADER dagger... and from what I'm seeing, that would put it into the 5 figure price range, and some seem to have sold for close to 50k.
I guess I need to get into gear and dig that thing up.
>>32285868
OP you have every right to have an expanded dong right now
>>32286522
make sure you date that fucker carefully. If you do your research correct you may have some of the earliest weapons the Nazi party ever used.
An SA knife. THE SA. Think about it. Hitler's earliest Praetorian guard.
>>32286655
Yeah, it's pretty nuts. I was aware of the historical significance of SA daggers in general, of course, but I always thought it was a run-of-the-mill one, maybe worth $800 or something.
If I turn out to be remembering right, though, it could be an absolutely insane to have. (And I could be wrong, but I definitely remember the metal chain part, when I was just researching them I was actually looking through them and wondering why none of them had a chain like my dad's, and then I got to the leader daggers and my jaw hit the floor.)
I just wish I had the rest of the loot my grandfather brought back - he was a Quartermaster officer at the end of the war, and was involved in processing captured material. He brought a whole bunch of "souvenirs" back, including five handguns (one of which was a presentation PP or PPK), but sadly my grandmother sold them off for pennies on the dollar when he died because she was scared of guns.

Garbage.
Blindly following orders was deemed no excuse in Nürnberg. You are 70 years behind the times.
>>32287167
Yeah if it is an SS dagger, this is an SA dagger. No idea how real it is though. Could be sitting on a gold mine.

It's just propaganda, you retard.

Not a huge amount, regular SA daggers in decent shape seem to be under $1k.
Special ones like the one >>32286522 might have can be worth a fuckton though.
>>32287573
Not all Germans committed war crimes, you know. Just as we can't hold the firebombing of Tokyo against the US soldiers who died for their country on the beaches of Normandy, we can't hold Treblinka against the German soldiers who died for their country in the Russian winter.

Basically what >>32287702 said.
Look, I'm about as far from a naziboo as it gets. They would've killed me for my ancestry, and I'm damn proud that both of my grandfathers served against them. I spend a lot of time going off on the bootlickers around here.
But that said, for every SS scumbag who committed one atrocity or another, there were 10 scared regular kids freezing their asses off on the front line for a war they probably didn't really understand or want to be part of. Guys who just did normal soldier stuff and lost their lives doing it, and only knew that they were fighting for their country. The guys who were tried at Nurnberg were convicted because they did horrible things that any reasonable person would know were wrong. The vast majority of the rank and file didn't, though.
Now, that said, we're not talking about the Heer here. These are SA knives. The SA, despite their later fall from grace, were true believers in the Nazi cause and were complicit in many horrendous acts. They were little more than a street gang with uniforms and even less of a conscience than usual. I have zero sympathy for them. However, their weapons are interesting and valuable historical artifacts, and in some cases are even beautiful examples of craftsmanship in their own right.
Aaaghhh! i wish i had that! :(
>>32287735
Back when I served we hear about laws of war and Nürnberg. You?
>>32287797
If you heard about them, then clearly you did not understand them.

There are websites dedicated to authenticating and appraising nazi shit.

Any pics of the other side of the blade?
I ask because according to my grandfather, the Germans made a cottage industry of selling fake reproduction daggers and other Nazi militaria/memorabilia to American GI's between 1945 and 1951 when the swastika was officially banned. A lot of guys actually bought their war trophies and then lied about their origins. That said, the Germans also sold or traded the real stuff as well.
It's also possible that the guy your great grandfather got it from really did take it from a dead soldier. It would've been the German guy's prize possession like a special medal. He may have been carrying it around with him in the field to show others as a badge of honor or to remind him of what he was fighting for.

There was definitely a fake memorabilia industry in Germany after the war. There's stuff floating around that came back with GIs but which was never actually made or issued during WWII. (Those belt buckle gun things are a famous example, though there's some controversy over whether they're real or not.)
It's also possible that it's real but was taken from a surrendering Nazi, or was collected by somebody else and then found its way into the possession of the guy your grandpa got it from. My dad's dad got his SA dagger the first way (as end of the war captured loot) and I have a few medals (pic related) that my mom's dad came back with despite not fighting on the front lines and also coming back before V-E day. (I assume he must have traded something to somebody for them.)
>>32285868
I have the exact same one but its in bad shape.

I think it is. looked up some stuff online.

>>32288144
The Germans were also obligated to wear their medals into combat, so in order to protect them they would send the real ones home and wear fake ones, thus the decorations looted from the dead or POWs are often fake to begin with, though officially made fakes.

Also from my grandfather, one way to tell a post-war fake is that it will have the word "Germany" printed or stamped on it. This was something the Brits forced on the rebuilding German industries to let English speakers know where certain products came from and also implied inferior quality compared to competing British made goods.
Nazis stole this design from the Swiss. It dates back to late medieval/renaissance period.
>>32285921
it's quite obviously been ground at some point looking at the blade. A typical, non-rare SA dagger in average condition runs about 500-$700USD. This example is pretty poor compared to those though, I'd say it's worth about 300-$350.
