Why is the Garand so needlessly huge?
>>
To beat gooks to death if you run out of ammo.
>>
>>32283682
I always read it as "grand".
>>
>>32283682
To club communists with.
>>
She is a healthy size.

gas tube and oprod are internal under the barrel.
>>
You expect a 30-06 autoloader to be small?
>>
>>32283682
So you can beat nazies to death once bayonets are fixed.
>>
>huge

Manlet radar going off the charts over here
>>
>>32283682
It has an oprod that runs the length of the front half of the rifle.
>>
>>32283682
You do understand it's much more complex than a bolt gun such as the Lee-Enfield right?

The garand is like .25-.5 lbs heavier for its "needlessly" bigger size, it fires a more potent cartridge, and is semi auto....

It's self loading

They seem very comparable to me. I can't tell much of a difference in weight either.
>>
>>32283682
Why are you such a limp wrist numale manlet?

>>32283732
You don't even need to fix bayonet if you want to beat some heads in.
>>
>>32283682
Cuz .30-06. If it was chambered in the T2 .276 Pedersen it woulda been a little smaller, a little lighter, and have a 10 round clip. But, logistics.
>>
>>32283682
So that if, God forbid, a brave American boy were to fall to some godless commie or gook piece of shit their malnourished and misguided hands would be too weak to wield the vanguard of freedom and the American way of life.

Also high test

it has and internal clip and gives you more thrusts per squeeze with every new clip you throw in. It will do alot of damage.

The only thing that's terribly excessive is the length of the gas system, and that's simply because it started life as a gas trap system (which NEEDS to extend all the way to the muzzle, for obvious reasons). You could bring the gas port much further back on the rifle and cut down a good chunk of both the reciprocating and total mass.

Other than that, I'd challenge you to design a semi-auto .30-06 rifle on pre-WWII tech that's significantly lighter than the M1 without making concessions to durability.

The only rifle that really came close was the Winchester M2 (the .30-06 predecessor to the M1 Carbine), and that was only because of David Marshall Williams's gas tappet.
>>
Basically what has been said in the thread thusfar. It's old, it autoloads 30-06 and it can be used to reliably beat japs and krauts to death every time. Pretty fookin' nifty design for being 80+ years old

>>

> why is garand needlessly huge\
it's not
it is just the right size for it's purpose

> serious round for serious shootin
> not a pansy sub-caliber rat shooter
> internal magazine for 8 rnds of 30/06
> overengineered to survive brutal battlefield conditions
> high mass rifle reduces punishing 30/06 recoil in rapid fire
> wood furniture

it's only large when compared to more modern (and weaker) "assault rifles"

my enfield weighs more than my garand, it's longer and higher

the garand is slightly wider at the belly but in all other dimensions, the enfeild no1 mk 3 is larger
>>
>>32283682

>my enfield weighs more than my garand
Should probably check that on a scale.
>>
>>32284869
i did.

my enfeild weighs about a 1/4 pound more when both are empty

slightly more when both are loaded

you are aware that no1 mk 3 enfeilds are significantly heavier than the later variants right?
>>
>>32285019
The No1 Enfields were some of the lightest Enfield rifles made.
According to the military the lightest Garand is still over a half pound heavier than an Enfield.

a semi auto action in a rifle necessitates additional space for required machinery not on a bolt action rifle, a piston or recoil system to cycle the action for one, the internal, en bloc magazine two,

I have the volley sights on one of mine, but I can't work out how to use it?
What do the numbers represent? I also have numbers right to the top.
>>
>>32285252
Hundreds of yards.
>>
>>32285263
The local range is only up to 200m and you only get 5mins every half an hour to check targets so I find it hard to work out.

It's not like it matters really since I got them just to play with so I don't need to know how to be a sharpshooter I guess.
>>
>>32285367
Zeroed at something like 300 yards.
Should be 3-4" high at 100.
http://www.milsurps.com/enfield.php?pg=ti14.htm
The volley sight is something specific to No1 and earlier rifles and is found on the left hand side. Not really useful unless playing with grenades or fucking around.
