>>
>>32280097

The RAV4 isn't a good SHTF vehicle, because it is barely passable as an off-road vehicle. While it can manage light snow/dirt roads, it has relatively low clearance and poor suspension. The differential and transmission cannot handle steep inclines. The engine is also relatively weak for what you would need.

By the time you improve all of these parts, you would be better off simply buying a different vehicle.

The 4Runner is actually a decent off-road vehicle, though you would need to get the upgraded suspension, and I don't know how strong/reliable the new KDSS system is.

Your own two feet
Bicycle
>>
A Honda xr200 or xr250 dirt bike. If a true shtf situation happened roads would be compromised and also be ambush points. A quad is a good option too but nothing beats a simple dirt bike. If I had to choose a 4 wheel vehicle I would pick a Tacoma or maybe a f-150. Trucks are way more useful that cars. Subarus are the only cars worth half a shit in a shtf situation.
>>
>>32278713
this. Unless you're out in the country, the roads are gonna be jammed with abandoned vehicles making most roads useless for vehicles

94 xr200. I put a pack on the front that has a shovel, rope, tire repair kit, air pump, rope, carbineer clips, 2 way radio, fuel hose long enough for siphoning, couple wrenches, bic lighters, crank radio w/ solar and cell charger, map, compass, 550 cord and a knife. That way my pack can carry water and other cool shit.

Usually take this with a vz58 and a Glock 19.

Good start, but for long term viability you'll need access to spare parts and they are quite rare in the west.
But if I want a SHTF car in the middle east I wouldn't look no further. Oh wait, SHTF is standard there, never mind.

In the end a bicycle is really the ultimate survival land vehicle. Easy to repair, highly standartized replacements parts, no fuel issues.

Disadavantage is obviously limited speed and capacity so depending on the type of catastrophe a car might have some merits.

SHTF doesn't necessarily have to be a post apocalyptic event where society collapses forever, but even in such an event, a car could be invaluable just to get out of dodge in the beginning of SHTF.
You can also run vehicles on alcohol, and producing your own alcohol is easier than gas for sure. There's also electrical engines, generating electricity should be doable even in SHTF.

Plus the engine will probably outlive you and it can easily survive with a few flats as long as its unloaded. Noise profile is not so good, especially considering you'll be engine braking whenever possible to avoid wear on the actual brakes. Off road potential is limited to say the least, many dirt roads are off limits too.

I bought a 2003 Durango SLT AWD/4WD for the Colorado mountains. Holy shit did this thing surprise the shit out of me. Super comfy suspension, interior, has great power for towing and street, and it feels super solid.

I've owned a few 4runners and love them. All lasted past 200k. I got the Durango at 60k at 130k now. It's been just as reliable as the Toyotas and I like the way it feels way more.

I can't vouch for any other year Durango but they got that 03 SLT perfected.

This and a stationary solar power unit.

Rear wheel-mounted 2-kW motor and a downtube-secured 1.3-kWh lithium-ion battery. It has three riding modes: Eco, Tour and Sport. Eco mode gives the rider up to 800 watts and up to around 50 miles of electric-assisted pedaling, Tour mode gives 31 miles with a motor output at 1,500 watts, and Sport mode unleashes the full 2,000 watts of motor power, hitting a top speed of 37 mph. Will get you around without need for a refinery. Get a bike trailer for small haulage. If the trailer can support a solar panel you could make some distance.

This, a Bike, but its got to be a good Bike (not the kind you will find at Walmart).

Then again you can steal bikes left and right after SHTF though your mileage may vary with how many of them have had their tires slashed and the rims kicked the shit out of.

> lose weight?
No you're not Too Fat to ride.
You dont need to focus on losing weight, you need to focus on getting Fit thats all.

Football players are often fat chub but they're also 300 pounds of cave your skull in.

Think Pyramid Head from Silent Hill.

You can be a Big, Fat, Badass.

Its not about how much you weigh, but what your body can do. The endurance will steadily creep up and get a little better over time as you monster-fy your body.

> muh weight
> muh tire's weight limit

Get better tires. Look into it.

> this tire chain thing people keep talking about

Im a big guy myself, 250-300 pounds my entire adult life. Ive only had a Chain break on me 1 Time.

However I have pushed my bikes so hard that upon jumping curbs or making turns the tire just fucking blows out. BANG.

Buddy of mine bought a new Yammy XT250 last summer and built his own trailer for it. Took it across Canada with very little issues. Aside from a home made trailer hitch, the only mod he did to the bike was to fit a 16 tooth primary sprocket for better cruising on the prairies.

The trailer is a single wheel design made from 2" square tubing with a rack on either side of the wheel to hold a pair of 20L gas cans. The middle is a flat cargo tray big enough to fit his 48 gal Rubbermaid locking storage container which can be removed when needed to haul firewood or whatever.

Its also worth noting that a Personal Vehicle is incredibly useful for going down Railroad Tracks, but the tires are going to have to be good.

There wont be any traffic or jammed cars there, and if you find a stopped train its probably got goodies in it.

> railroad is dangerous
While other people may have the same idea, consider that everywhere is out in the middle of nowhere now. Its a better place to fight than out on the road.

Railroad is also a good way to get out of the CITY too, a place where you will most certainly die.

If you live in a city get familiar real quick with where the train tracks are, and how to reach the ones that connect out of town.

Go anywhere, carry anything, use any fuel, and take people with you.

But hey, that's at least 20 grand worth of shit, so about $19,990 more than what the average /k/ommando has for disposable income. I get it. I can't afford it either. That doesn't mean it isn't an ideal setup.

>>
>>32278481
I hate these threads, because it depends on what kind of SHTF scenario we're talking about and what YOUR use for that vehicle is. Are you defending a homestead? Are you trying to make it cross country? Is this a virus scenario where you're avoiding main roads and contact with anyone? What? Parameters need to be defined.

No.

We do not know what SHTF will be. This is a discussion of which vehicle covers the widest possible number of scenarios adequately.

I regularly take that xr200 on 40 mile rides innawoods. Typically taking dirt roads in a huge loop. A dirt bike is so much more agile than anything else out there. Rugged trucks just cant dodge or pound their way through rough terrain like two wheels can.

They definitely have some capabilities, but their biggest drawbacks are that
>they're loud
Like holy shit I think the only ground vehicle that's louder are sportbikes with aftermarket exhausts. Everybody within 10 miles will know where you are.
>extremely limited weight capacity before they're topped out
I know there's a lot of factors to this (rider weight, engine displacement, gearing, etc) but generally once you get around 200lbs attached to the bike beyond the rider they're barely moving and the suspension's squatted enough you're gonna bottom it out and damage the frame/wheels even on mild terrain.
>tiny range
Dirtbikes have tiny gas tanks, and while they're decently fuel efficient you're usually looking at only 50-60 miles on one tank.
>>

Or quite possibly a person who has spent most of his adult life driving off road. Which is where he'll be when shtf because the pavement ends not ten miles from town. Fixing things himself. With basic tools. Know that if he carries a few spare parts he can keep his truck running indefinitely. What happens when your fancy 2014 ford explorer burns out its 4wd solenoid or its coil pack dies? What if the security system locks the car out and prevents you from starting it? Not going to be able to take it to the dealership and have their special diagnostic equipment reset the computer when shtf. That old 70's truck can carry every part that could possibly break behind the seat with room left for a tool kit. Any one of those parts can be replaced in a matter of minutes.

>>
>>32281792
IF and IR suspensions have their own merits. I would argue that the articulation and ground clearence of independent suspensions, along with the improvement in manufacturing and materials, has made up for any loss of durability. If you're doing rock crawling in SHTF you've got other bigger problems than your suspension.

Further, I would argue, as have the british, that lockers are the most important part of an offroad vehicle

this isnt the late 80s, early 90s anymore, buddy, and things have come a long way

Ideally a diesel truck or SUV I think

I wish Toyota would make a diesel Tacoma

I mean even Mazda is coming out with a diesel cx-5 (could actually be cool)

There are the old dodge mechanical diesels and then now I think most are huge trucks like 2500s. Maybe the smallest is the Nissan titan

You are wrong on many many things there boyo.

Engine brakes have mufflers and are stock on any new truck.

Off road is better than a standard vehicle owing to the 8 drive wheels. Many trucks are specifically off road specialized for logging, cattle operations, and oil field work among many others.

Dirt roads follow the same as above. There is very few legitimate dirt roads that are off limits.

This changes when you have a loaded trailer as sinking becomes a major issue for non specialized vehicles.

Even with a muffled jake brake they're still quite loud. Whether they're loud enough to be a major concern is another question.

Big rigs have dick-all for ground clearance generally. The ones that do are the specialized offroad logging trucks. The biggest barrier to ground clearance is the humongous air dam on the front.

Not all semi cabs are 8x8, there's a lot of ones that only the rearmost axle is a drive axle. Granted, the MAJORITY are. But not all.

A semi would do fine on pretty much any road (paved or otherwise) wide enough to fit between the trees, and for low-speed offroading. your biggest concerns are ruts left by other vehicles, and tipping over.

It has been my experience that even on very soft ground you're more likely to have your trailer tip than sink. And even if it does sink, unless you're already pushing your max load most semi's have the ass to pull it out provided you have traction.

Those USPS trucks are the worst things ever. While It is entertaining to watch it get stuck in my driveway literally every day, filling in the ruts is a chore.

Have the ones in your area been converted to propane yet?

Mine have.
>every time they drive by it smells like farts and burning wires
>the LP trucks top out at about 55mph yet they insist on driving on the 70mph interstate
>routinely get stuck on perfectly flat, paved surfaces (like parking lots and at intersections) in the winter because it has a total of about half a square inch of ground contact

Nope, they still have the 2.2L I4's.

Literally the only time I've broken chains on bicycles were on my freestyle BMX bikes because I was doing abusive shit to them like grinding on the chain itself. Although those were shitty chains. When I finally bought a good chain it never broke even with the abuse and my powerful legs.

> not knowing how to maintain a bicycle worth two shits in a SHTF scenario

>>
>>32284069
where will you get avgas, hydraulic fluids and or any other oils, etc, how will you conduct maitenence, etc, this is not viable.
>>
>>32285924
this, i have bikes i had when i was 12 that i can still fucking ride a good 20 miles no problem. It's all about three things: having a good bike, keeping it maintained (this is super easy, literally just prevent rust, oil the chain, and tighten some nuts and bolts) and being in half-decent shape so you can actually ride the thing
>>
>>32280289
Terrible choice. With most of today's fuel being 10% ethanol the fuel that you'll find will be useless in that bike after a month.

Go drain your fuel system, fill it back up with 10% ethanol fuel, leave the petcock on, let it sit for a month. Your bike probably won't run and if it does it will run like shit. Guaranteed after two months of that 10% ethanol fuel sitting your bike will not run at all.

That's what will happen to you unless you have access to a large supply of non ethanol blended fuel. Depending on where you live you might not have access to any for hundreds of miles.

Diesel Jeeps stateside are hard as fuck to find. The Cherokee Turbo Diesel was fucking amazing but Chrysler and AMC were a bunch of cucks and fucked us over.

Btw the YJ (like your pic) was a Chrysler product. The AMC era Cherokees were nightmares to work on, the Inline 6 was still a beast but Chrysler did a lot to make it better.

The majority of shit in YJs and XJs was leftover AMC shit. I was surprised at how spartan the Chrysler era jeeps were. They really didn't do much with them aside fuck with styling and add better ignition systems and better rear diffs in the last XJs and YJs.

T-case, transmission, engine remained the same pretty much.

Honestly though if you want a solid Jeep, get a Kaiser and drop a Cummies Turbo Daddy into it. Disregard AMC AND Chrysler and get the best shtf jeep.

diesel truck.

you can run damn near anything in them. black diesel will actually run better than the modern pump diesel will, since pump is low sulfur now, and causes your EGTs to go way up.

Valid points.

I don't see ghost level noise discipline being required. If you get about 2-3 miles away from a highway you can no longer hear the vehicles. Noise is't even a major concern with current army vehicles, even the tanks are fairly tame outside a mile. The jake break noise carries for miles though.

I would hope anyone who considers a vehicle as a shtf tool would of taken the design details into consideration instead of just grabbing the first shitbox they found off the side of the road.

I don't think we'll see any SHTF Cadillacs, but maybe a few ford Taurus' if they lift and put proper wheels on them.
