New to /k/. Looking for a good knife

https://north40.com/gerber-bear-grylls-ultimate-fixed-blade-knife?utm_source=google_shopping&gclid=CN7ikO-A6tACFUEdgQod9l0GrA

Not sure if this is just celebrity endorsed garbage or if it's good. I've seen one to purchase at about half price.

Is it worth it or should I save my money for something else? If not do you have any good suggestions for a knife?
>>

Complete trash. I bought one when I was young and stupid. It broke. Also, no real outdoor knife should have serrations.

I was going to make a thread, but I'll ask here instead.

How do you carry your folding/EDC knife? I've tried clipping it to my belt, but it snags on seatbelts and tables.

What's the general verdict for what to get for either a mora or a buck? Who makes better knives for what purposes?

Personally, I'm just looking for an all-around use knife but since this probably counts as a knife general add in which is better for what purposes:
>>
>>32277701
You clip it in your pocket.
>>
>>32277791
The buck looks better but that's about it, its a very good knife but Mora are better and cheaper

My Buck 119 is one of my favorite and go to knives but for pure utility and simplicity of sharpening, the cheap Mora are better

The sheathes kind of suck though

>>
>>32277791
Some of it depends on where you live. Where I am, I could pick up a Buck locally and not pay too much. I would have to order a Mora, and end up paying more than its worth. The Buck still ended up costing more, but I didn't have to pay more than MSRP like I would have with the Mora.

So I'm starting a knife collection but I've been too lazy to learn sharpening so far. But then I randomly got my hands on an old school, crank powered grindstone.
Any tips on using it? I'm not quite sure how to get the right angle and don't want to ruin my blades too much.

I personally think the Skeletool line and Signal are too gimmicky and underperforming compared to other similar priced (and even cheaper) Leatherman models. I have an old Supertool, Core, Wingman, old Wave, and new Surge. EDC I'd go Wingman or Sidekick depending on which toolset you value more, and camping depends on if you are a car camper or backpack or lightweight camper.
>>
>>32285711

Depends what the mechanism is.
>>
>>32282511
>Would not use them for heavier tasks like wood processing though.
Like splitting firewood? I know you can to that with a 119, but you might might as well be using an hatchet.
>>
>>32281818
Grindstones are for putting a bevel on a knife, not sharpening. You need to be careful with the heat from friction and how fast it removes material, or you'll fuck it up. Also, you'll be unsymmetric without a lot of practice.
>>
>>32287014
Thanks, that helps. I think I'll have ton invest into some regular sharpening stuff for now.
>>
>>32281193

>>
>>32287592
Is there a trick to these or something? I have one and I've never managed to get really good results out of it. I can get a knife to be plenty sharp for normal use, but never shaving sharp or anything.
>>
>>32286221
Using a hallow ground knife with a skinny tang for splitting firewood is just all around not the best idea.
>>
>>32287620
much of that has to do with the type of steel your knife is made from. you'll never get stainless steel "shaving sharp" because the metal itself isn't capable of holding that kind of edge. a carbon steel knife is but takes more work to maintain and requires more frequent sharpening
>>
>>32287941
Bullshit. Stainless steel is nog just 420hc, or crappy 440a.

Sandvik moras are stainless and sharp as fuck, and then there are things like aeb-l, xhp, elmax, and other super steels.
>>
>>32281771
My friend has one actually, from his granddad. The thing is really cool. if not scuffed and dirty.
>>
>>32287620

The lansky bits I bought include the 1000 and 2000 grit stones, then I follow those up with a hard-backed leather strop with green chrome paste.

Mirror-shiny edge, shaving sharp.
>>
>>32277527

KABAR fighting/utility
>>
>>32277527

It's garbage. It is a half tang knife. So the steel of the knife only goes halfway through the handle. It's weak and shit.

For a cheap knife that's not shit and literally at Walmart the Buck reaper is a pretty good one. Nice length makes it good for batoning (splitting wood with a knife and a stick to whack the knife with) wood. A little thin, so it doesn't cause the wood to split as well as some, but it's pretty cheap and pretty good.

Becker BK9 is godly. It's a very long, very thick knife. So when you use it to baton wood it really causes the wood to split along the grain like a splitting maul would. It has a very nice length so you can split pretty thick piece of wood so you can get some that will burn for longer.
>>
>>32282393
I've had one for 17 years and it's done very well for me. But /k/ hates them because they have a serrated spine and don't cost $300.
>>
>>32288561

Don't listen to this guy. The KA-BAR is alright for a woods knife, there are worse. However, the clip point on the KABAR has a very sharp false edge. It chews through batoning sticks almost as fast as the knife processes wood. It's also very thin, so not great for splitting wood.

These things make sense for a combat knife, it would stab into a human very nicely, but it is not a very good woods knife.
>>
>>32277641
I have one because of scream.being a useful tool was an afterthought in buying it
>>
>>32288539
Maybe the lack of fine stones is my issue. I have the basic kit that only comes with 3 stones that top out at 600. I'm also missing the stand, I guess I should do a knife stuff order soon and get some stones, the stand, and a strop and paste.
>>
>>32282393

>>
>>32281818

Don't use a grinding wheel for hand knives.

If you want to learn how to freehand then buy some cheap knives, a Norton India IB8 combination coarse/fine sharpening stone and then practice what you see in this video until you can reliably reproduce the results shown in the video:

https://youtu.be/cWU_qTp3DLM
>>
>>32287941

No.

Any cutlery steel with an unbotched heat treatment can be made sharp enough to shave, slice newsprint, and pushcut newsprint with the grain.

At ~4000 grit or above you can also make any cutlery steel do crossgrain pushcuts on newsprint.

Carbon steels just tend to be easier to sharpen to a high level of sharpness.
>>
>>32289072

It's possible to get a knife sharp enough to shave arm hair off a ~325 grit stone. More likely you are either failing to fully apex the edge, or, are reaching an apex bit creating a burr you aren't removing.

I have a Condor Nessmuk. I blued it to a midnight black and refinished the wood. Excellent steel. Used it to split timber and hack down small trees, as well as cut a board down to a walking stick. Its useless for everyday carry but its an excellent bushcraft knife- the short wide blade makes a great planer and is very handy to notch and work wood with. Stays super sharp

Just my opinion but I like the following.
4-6 inch fixed blade.
At least 1/8" thick
Full tang
Scandi grind because I prefer scandi for wood carving.
Carbon steel because it holds a nice edge.
Flat spine so I can spark a fire steel
A handle that has good grip even when wet.

All that being said I love my Condor Bushlore. Its only 1075 Carbon steel but after two years of moderate treatment I have no Complaints. Its not tacticool looking which I also like. Its a hell of a knive for $30US. As a bonus it comes with an awesome leather sheath. (I added a Dangler though).
Its basically a copy of Ray Mears Woodlore knife (which iirc is like $400).

I have a new production model with the plastic handle. It weighs next to nothing and is sharp as fuck. The originals are about twice the weight(Which still isn't much) but others function the same.
>>
>>32288609

>False edge.

It's called a swedge when it's sharp.
>>
>>32294195
>More likely you are either failing to fully apex the edge

I think that's what it was. I decided to try again and watched some videos first, and tried the sharpie on the edge trick that some of them showed. I guess I was trying to use too shallow of an angle, and once I went up a step I managed to get my S90V EDC knife to a point where it'll slice paper pretty easily and shave a bit.

The only thing I'm really having an issue with is the tip. I can raise a burr easily on the rest of the blade, but that last 1/4" or so just doesn't want to cooperate. I still got it to a somewhat decent level of sharpness but not as good as the belly.

Now I guess I just need to get/make myself a strop so I can take it to the next level.
>>
>>32299394
Addendum to this -

Wow, I read that you can just use an old belt without compound, and holy shit it actually works. Still not that nice mirror polish or anything, but the knife actually shaves easily now.
>>
>>32299394
>>32299417

I'm not sure how consistent the Land kg guided system is on knife tips. If it does keep a consistent angle (you'd have to Google that) then the issue is most likely that your knife is thicker behind the edge tip and therefore more metal has to be removed to apex that part of the blade.

Also, pasted strops are not necessary to get a very sharp apex (and can be counterproductive if you want a coarse apex finish). If a plain leather belt improved the sharpness it's almost certain that it just removed the burr that was left from sharpening.

You should watch this video showing you how to shear off a burr with high angle passes. You can replicate this process on a Lansky by switching to the highest angle setting for 1-2 very low force passes per side to deburr:

https://youtu.be/oRmcQ-MqbBE
>>
>>32299841

*Lansky

*Thicker behind the edge AT THE tip

I should have coffee before replying in the morning.
>>
>>32299841
Gotcha, that makes sense. The metal could definitely be thicker at the tip, but I also think the Lansky's angle might be less consistent as you swing toward the tip. I also had a bit of trouble around the choil so it seems like the latter might be the case. (I also kind of fucked up the base of my plunge grind in the process, good thing I'm not planning on selling this knife...)

I couldn't feel a burr before I stropped, but it seems reasonable that there may have been a microscopic one that the belt cleaned up.
>>
>>32299884

Honestly, I would recommend using a traditional burr based approach to using the Lansky guided system where you work one side until you have a full length burr heel to tip and only then switch sides and repeat.

It will get you much more consistent results. Basically the approach shown in this video, but used with the Lansky:
