If you can find someone inside your state to sell them to you obviously that is the best

but if otherwise, ideally you just smuggle them in from out of state where the laws are lax and you can meet up with people to buy. You have to hide them well so that they show up as little as possible in a profile view in your car, that is assuming they use xray's to look at your vehicle in the rare occasion.
You also have to at least try to make sure it doesn't have any scent of gunpowder that the dogs can pick up
then the worst case scenario from that is that they do a fake pick up with the dogs and they tear your car to shreds anyway, in which case you are definitely fucked. Just remember that they need a warrant to search your car and stick to that. Unless they want to accuse you of drug possession where the warrant thing gets thrown out.

tl;dr learn how to smuggle. It's easy and they usually don't search you extensively.

Easiest way is Armslist or private sale. I prefer buying from lgs because its always cheaper even if I have to do a background check its worth it compared to having to deal with people trying to ask for brand new value for a used gun.

Also the background check is only about 4 minutes.
