In Lebanon, the Merkava proved itself a useful tool, with distinct advantages over the IDF's older tanks. However, it suffered a lot of teething troubles, and so the product-improved version entered production after a few years, the mark 2. Improvements include making the mortar internal, uprating the engine and installing an automatic gearbox, improved armor (the original Merkava was all steel, as a Blazer package hadn't been designed yet) and various minor changes.

The mark 2 was replaced in turn by the mark 3, sporting an improved powertrain, improved vetronics, a 120mm NATO compatible gun and a revolution in armor- modularity. The ability to replace armor blocks at the lowest level greatly reduces the time needed to return damaged vehicles to action, as well as reducing obsolescence by allowing cheap simple upgrades to the armor.

In addition to refusing to service the G-Wagen, Mercedes demanded that the RAF give it back to them because Argentina hadn't paid for it so it was considered stolen.

BTW this attempt to get Mercedes to service it, was a whole 10 years after it was captured in the Falklands War. RAF personnel had been driving around Germany and other countries as a staff hire car for No. 18 Squadron for a decade by this point.

They told Mercedes to get fucked since it was war booty, and kept it a few more years. Now it's in one of the RAF Museums

It was produced for a contract which specified a single engined reconnaissance aircraft. Wanting a better field of view whilst not using a second engine this asymmetrical design was settled upon.

Ironically the winner of the contract was the Focke-Wulf 189 with a very similar design that looked like a twin boom/engine version of the 141.

I'm back.
In the early 2000s, the IDF developed the mark 4. Differences include the powerpack (more on that later), revised turret shape and layout, improved armor and armor modularity, roof armor (thickest on any production tank), all new electronics, 10 round loader assist device in with blowout panels in the rear of the turret, all electric turret drive (also present on the mark 3, but improved); a far greater proportion of the tank was now made in Israel.
The powerplant changes were major- the marks 1 through 3 used the AVDS 1790, in various outputs, with an Allison transmission. These were imported from the US and were broadly similar to the engines in the M60 and upgraded M48 and Centurion. However, there's a limit to how much power can be extracted from the thing, and its layout strictly limited the front arrangement of the tank- the AVDS 1790 is air cooled, so it needs big fans and airflow, resulting in the characteristic bulge at the front of the hull. The mark 4 uses an MTU powerpack with Renk transmission (built by Ashot Ashkelon in Israel under license); the MTU diesel is more powerful (1500HP VS 1200HP for the AVDS 1790), and is water-cooled. This means that the radiator design space is a little more flexible, thus allowing the designers to remove the bulge and get a nice uniform (and well armored) glacis.

After the battering taken in the 2006 war, the IDF realized it wanted high protection against large ATGMs like the Kornet from all angles, not just the front. With regular armor, this would make the vehicle an immobile monster, so the trophy system, developed by Rafael, was chosen (after competition with Iron Fist) to be fitted to the tanks. While expensive, the system has proven itself in combat, beung capable of intercepting a very wide range of AT threats. As of a few months ago, all new Merkavas and Namers are fitted with the system on the production line.

Seeing as the IDF has a limited budget, and the tank production plant isn't large, over the years the IDF has upgraded older equipment to keep it relevant. Pic is a Merk mark 2 dor dalet (with a non-upgraded one in the background). All active tank units are now mark 3 and 4, with reserve brigades still operating the mark 2, presumably to be phased out over the next decade as the crews trained on them are released from reserve duty.

They didn't actually lose that many, and any tank in existence at the time would have been vulnerable to much of what they faced.
There were however many losses to heli-launched Milans and HOTs though, partly due to lack of doctrine regarding such threats. The mark 2 greatly improved protection vs shaped charges.

They also had some mismarked equipment, the plaque for the Achillies referred to it as a charioteer. I got a few good keks out of it back then, next time I go I'll make sure to see if it's still like that.
Yeah the Pz 4 was the best the Nazis ever made but it was still pretty bad compared to the Sherman.

Generally, it stays as long as it might be useful. There's no point scrapping them when new, better steel is cheap and available, and knowing how the IDF prepares for doomsday, they'd like to keep the option of reactivating them or converting them to something else on the table. Current projects include "Ofek", a sort of mobile command post/APC based on the mark 2s being retired.
If you have a boneyard like AMARG, it's literally cheaper to leave it all there rather than scrap it, as scrapping requires careful disassembly, demilitiarzation, destroying classified or sensitive parts, sifting the different materials and shipping them off to recycling. New metal is higher quality and pretty cheap, so there's no real point-let it sit, maaaaaaybe it'll be useful some day (like when the Aussies bought replacement wings for their F-111, the Americans had stopped operating them so they got boneyard wings on the cheap instead of new production)
>>
>>32254055
But the older M60s are being scrapped, possibly to free up real estate and possibly because they can no longer be effectively reactivated.

You are aware that choosing is a action which can be taken even in the absence of Jews, right? And that not everything is a conspiracy.
These /pol/ memes get tiring after a while.
In this particular case, the single pin was preferred as it offered better rough-terrain (Golan Heights basalt) mobility without breaking, suffered less wear in the sand than double pin, and seeing how the IDF doesn't move its tanks on civvy roads all that much, tearing up asphalt was less of a concern.
Also, basing the running gear on the Cent allowed reusing its wheels and possibly bogies as emergency spares- I've seen Cent-based vehicles equipped with Merk bogies so the inverse may be possible.
>pic related, note Merkava mk 1-2 style 2 spring bogie on Cent-derived Puma.
>>
>>32256233
See my reply to the other commenter on that post. Also, do yourself and everyone else a favor and read a book about the lebanon war, as you seem to know very little about it. The IDF advanced into enemy held and fortified terrain, completely BTFO the Syrian army, and forced the PLO to retreat to Tripoli. During all this, the armored corps suffered smaller proportional losses than any other branch of the IDF land forces.
If they were half as shit as you claim, they wouldn't have stuck around for long. The IDF doesn't have money to waste on useless equipment.

The United States and Israel cooperate closely in a number of areas of military activity. The U.S. underwrites some of Israel's research and development of weapons, and has contributed significant amounts of money to Israeli defense projects such as the Merkava main battle tank and the IAI Lavi ground-attack aircraft. Israel is a participant in the F-35 Lightning II fighter development program and was offered access to the F-22 Raptor program, though it turned this down due to the high costs.[3]

There is much I would like to add, some of it unfortunately left out due to OPSEC.
Suffice to say, the Americans get more out of all arms development deals with Israel than Israel does. Far more. I also don't know where that source is from, as the Americans tried to kill the Lavi multiple times before finally succeeding as it was threatening the F-16 export market by being cheaper and more maneuverable.
Israel is being given the F-35 next week because the maintenance branch here- specifically יאא22, is a world leader in terms of pushing the envelope for aircraft and troubleshooting systems. They share everything with the US DOD, who has ordered Boeing to change their production drawings and maintenance manuals to match those of the Israelis.
So by giving Israel the F-35 they get bragging rights of "even the Israelis use it", and get the thing tested by the most competent guys there are. ( half the reason that the יאא finds problems so quickly is that the IAF regularly overstresses its airframes beyond manufacturer specs so all problems appear earlier). As for the F-22: Israel wanted, was told no. Israel wanted to buy new F-15s to replace older ones, was told no, forced to buy 35s or nothing.
Don't fall for the memes, the Americans never do anything unless they think they can gain from it.

This is the magazine system for AAIs submission to the United States NIBLICK grenade Launcher program, itself an outgrowth of project SALVO, an effort to create the United States next generation infantry rifle in the 1960s. the determination was that there was a need for a grenade launcher; this inevitably netted the US the M203, but not before AAI submitted a design with a 3 round en-bloc that would have fit onto their project SALVO submission.

That is the (X)M-148E1, a three shot conversion of the M79 by AAI/China Lake, that served along the same time the aforementioned AAI NIBLICK concept was mentioned.

This is the project NIBLICK proposal.

The AAI corperation was the Armys golden child of the late 1950s to the 1970s, when Colt firmly replaced them in that role. The Grenade the NIBLICK used was as unique as their submission. Seeking to overcome the disadvantages and bulk a multi-shot launcher would bring, AAI designed the DBCATA Grenade, or Disposable Barrel and Case Area Target Ammunition. The case was rifled, and, effectively, the 40mm round acted as its own barrel and ammunition.

The AAI SPIW was a total failure. It was poorly engineered from a humanistic standpoint, being very heavy, having poor ergonomics and even worse manual of arms. However, it is noted that AAI never INTENDED their submissions, truthfully, to be operated by man. AAIs weapons were testbeds, never really intended to see combat use, at least, not as they were submitted for testing.

I've read a few books that had interviews with military defectors and can recall at least 3 instances of them mentioning them. Apparently they swore off the things after the gulf war. One of them mentioned that they had received a few T-72s that were used as test platforms and development guides and the first thing they did was take out the autoloaders.

It kinda makes sense, the USSR wanted them to reduce crew numbers of short term conscripts while the Inmin Gun is an all volunteer force with 12 years terms of enlistment. Why bother with a temperamental, expensive and slow autoloader when your human loader is going to have spent 6-7 years drilling at his job?

They have all the problems I see with the T-Bolt and that are shared by the Schmidt-Rubin rifles before the K31, being that they lock at the rear of the receiver and require the bolt body to extend further forward to reach the breach.

I was thinking more along the lines of the MG42 bolt, or at least the head, and then having the bolt lock into a barrel extension to ease production and lower cost.

More importantly, the action should be smoother, as the primary camming device and the bolt pull would both be linear, hopefully eliminating the effort of releasing the lugs as seen in the Schmidt Rubin rifles and in the Blasers I have used.

As for feeding from magazine, I would take a page from Mossberg's bolt actions with the falling push feed.

Also, I am burgerkin, so I have never handled a Lynx in person.

I see where you're going with this. Interesting idea. European hunters tend to be traditionalists, so can't say, if this would be a success but at least it's better than a semi-auto MG.

Lynx is probably the highest quality manufacturer we have. Criminally unknown but also unreasonably good rifles. The bolt is smooth and highly regarded but still not what you described. You should read some reviews on them. There are plenty online and they can be found with Google. My dream rifle is actually the Target model in 6.5 Lapua.
>>
>>32262660
I was familiar with them and knew they were well regarded. They just are one of those higher end rifles rarely (if ever) imported to the US, and I will likely never see one in person.

I originally found out about them when looking for a centerfire straight pull.

As for the roller-locked, I imagine that taller rollers could be used to create a narrower bolt and slimmer overall action, something that could be fashioned into a more traditional design.
>>
>>32263008
I already came up with a different idea for a smoother straight pull. We'll see, if it ever materializes.

Suppressive fire. I've heard stories, a single Merkava can lay down more fire than an entire infantry heavy weapons platoon.
The .50 was originally used for target practice (main gun simulator), but it was soon realized that there are situations where you'd rather have a .50 than a 7.62, such as shooting through walls.
The guys in back thing is a meme, you can ony carry around 2 guys with no equipment, if you want more you have to get rid of your main gun ammo and it won't be comfortable or safe.

It's useful for many things
-Firing flares so the infantry can see at night
-Firing smoke to cover their advance annd to cover the tank's movement
-Firing HE to destroy enemies out of reach of the main gun (say, behind a hill).
It's been useful enough that the IDF has kept the function in the mark 4, and is planning on keeping it in future vehicles.

>>32264667
I don't know, I wasn't the one asking for design ideas.

I like the R8, one of the few modern, higher end European hunting rifles to make it over here in any numbers, but I do have a few complaints.

Firstly, the cost is too high to be viable in general consumption in the US, and I would imagine a cheaper rifle would sell to an extent in Europe if the quality (and frivolous flourish) was there. That said, I would like to see a rifle decidely better than my last couple Euro-gun adventures, which were a Portuguese produced FN/Browning/Winchester three lug bolt action and a UGB-25 Excel. Of the two, the UGB-25 was the more useless.

I also don't like the rocking motion on the R8 that operates the cam that expands the bolt head. It was one of my few complaints on the actual manual of arms after firing one. I am curious to see what a strictly linear bolt actuation can do to improve this. Also, the elephant head on the bolt handle of the one I fired was uncomfortable.

Lastly, I wasn't particularly blown away by the barrel change system. I understand that multi-caliber setups are useful in more regulated markets, but the whole affair seemed overblown. Accuracy with production ammo was good, but not great, in both 300 Win Mag and 243 Win. I would not be offended if less caliber flexibility could reduce costs. Remember, I am still talking about a bolt that locks into a barrel extension, meaning caliber swaps between related chamberings would still be very simple, even more so than even the current barrel nut budget rifles sold currently.

What I'm interested to see is that an original steel design would be very Finnish thinking. Certainly 7075 is good stuff too and has been proven to work in arctic with other materials. Way more. First I need to graduate, which hopefully doesn't take too long, then we need to start with some smaller products to accumulate enough money to buy bigger and better machinery, think of a good design, actually design the rifle, test it, finalize the design, figure out a way to sell it internationally, manufacture it and then you'll get something.
