Every standardized cartridge is a meme, in the sense that it's a unit of information passed from one group of people to another.

The .40 exists because some fraction of the handgun buying market wanted a cartridge that was more powerful than the 9mm, but smaller than the .45 ACP. People who claim that the .40 is shit because it combines the recoil and capacity of a .45 with the power of a 9mm are wrong. People who claim the .40 is amazing because it combines the capacity of a 9mm with the power of a .45 are wrong. The .40 is to handguns what the 16 gauge is to shotguns and the .25-06 is to rifles; sandwiched in between two more popular options, but still adequate at whatever it's expected to do.

It's a good midpoint between 9mm and .45 ACP. It came into existence b/c the FBI flirted with 10mm, but felt it had too much recoil, so they basically turned it into 10mm Short, so to speak. So, what we're left with is a cartridge that's a little more powerful than 9mm, and magazines that hold a few more rounds than .45. On the other hand, it holds less rounds than a 9mm, and is less powerful than a .45. For some people, it's in a nice sweet spot, and produces a well rounded gun. I've got a Sig P229 in .40, it fits me perfectly, and is a little less flinch inducing than a Sig P220 .45. So, it's a niche.

At the time of its inception .40 was worthwhile but now that 9mm isn't as anemic as it once was it's pretty much been made obsolete. .40 will technically perform better than 9mm but the difference is negligible and it costs more and generally has lower magazine capacity.

The .38 Special is just a compromise between .38 Long Colt and .38-40
The 7.62x51 is just a compromise between .30-06 and .280 British
The 5.56 is just a compromise between .222 Remington and .222 Remington Magnum
7.62x39 is just a compromise between 7.62x54R and 7.62x25 Tokarev.
.338 Lapua is just a compromise between .308 and .50 BMG.
Worry less about "Is my cartridge a meme" and more about "does it poke holes in people"

Listen son, the 9mm, .40sw and .45acp all cause the same damage on somebody. All three will kill you just as good.

But 9mm is a little more likely to deflect and a little less likely to hit the spine and arteries behind it.

Just like the .380 is a little less effective than the 9mm on the same grounds.

The .40sw is a little more effective, just a hair enough for the purposes of slaying the human being, that it removes some of those frailties of the 9mm that can still allow someone to keep going.

You're still going to need shot placement just like a .22 or 9mm so its nothing fancy at all, it just means its going to skewer somebody.

If you're an operator or you've got a can the .40 is the perfect clinch point for bullet mass and velocity. Especially with the heavier 200 grain Wadcutter ammunition.

Most .45acps are Subsonic naturally. Most .40s are supersonic... but there are a few loads that are Subsonic without compromising reliability.

Im not aware that a 10mm Auto can even go subsonic.

Plus you're still getting the 12-14 round capacity, maybe more with a Glock (I think I saw a 28 round mag for it).

But actually I think the 9x25 is better than the 10. Based on it, you're lobbing a narrower bullet that has just as much firepower behind it.

If you use a lighter bullet like 115gr its going to kick softer and its going to be like a standard 9mil but going 400fps faster.

It's fine. People just prefer 9mm or .45 cause .40 has a snappier recoil. 9mm recoil is easily manhandled and .45 is just a push.

the differences between 9mm and .40 are not appreciable, so i own multiple pistols in this globally standardized round that i can probably go ask my neighbor for if SHTF. smallest pistol round i would ever carry seriously for self defense or combat, and theres a 75% chance any pistol or SMG i pick up will be 9mm in a absolute end of the world scenario.

The advantages of 10mm over .40 and .45 are obvious, so yeah im not explaining that one.
