Seems like a viable idea. Probably wouldn't work for a mugging as one could recover from a good sanding pretty easily. But if you were wrestling over something and you had the upper hand enough to draw your pocket sand, that would probably be the best use.

You can buy special pocket pockets (pocket within a pocket) that holds you sand and is easily removed. Check your local Mega-Lo-Mart or firearms store for them

Its crude and wont guarantee no sand in your actual pant pockets but you can sow your own pocket sand holder that fits into your pants. I'd suggest inquiring on a fabrics/textile board as I can't recommend anything too specific. I have heard of people having the sand holders made out of a fabric called 'delaine'
