What is your favorite handgun you've owned and why?

Winchester 70 pre-64. Love the wood grain in the stock, the old optic I have on it, and just feels solid when shooting.

Oh shit you said handgun. Nevermind.

Don't really have a favorite. I love them all equally for different reasons.

I have not yet found the perfect handgun.

Virtually all of John Browning's designs, including the .25 caliber Vest Pocket, have, in my opinion, better triggers than pretty much anything made today, but I have no desire to carry any of them due to the heavy weight, low capacity, and lack modern safety features. It's hard for me to shoot badly with any Sig P-series, but I don't like some of Sig's current manufacturing processes, which I think decrease the lifespan of their alloy frames unnecessarily, and the DA trigger reach on Sigs is too long for me. I don't think the CZ 75 has a great trigger unless you give it a really good polishing job, and even then, it's not the type of trigger I prefer, not crisp enough.

I tend to dislike most of the new ergonomic designs, a la the HK P30/Walther PPQ grip shape, since the rounded backstrap seems to allow the gun to shift to the side during recoil, which adds an extra factor to handling which I'd rather not have to deal with. I don't mind a thumb safety on the frame, but dislike slide-mounted safeties. I'd rather not have a safety-less design if the trigger pull has so much "safety"-mindedness that it's bad to pull. I prefer streamlined designs that maximize capacity and minimize bulk.

The gun needs to be able to shoot easily, by some combination of factors. Recoil is a factor, but I'm not crazy about heavy guns. I prefer the pistol to be able to mitigate recoil by means of its spring design and the timing of its breech lock-up. Balance is also very important. I don't like it when the gun tries to fall forward out of my grip if I hold it loosely with no ammo in the magazine. It also needs to have a good grip texture so a little bit of sweat can't make it too slippery.

My current favorite pistol is the HK USP Compact (I have one in each of .40 and 9mm) with a light LEM trigger kit installed, but I also like the full size USP 45, although it's harder for me to shoot the bigger gun due to my hand size.

My .36 Uberti 1851 Navy. It's very satisfying to shoot, well balanced, low recoil, great trigger, and the intimacy of reloading it is refreshing

I've carried it through multiple pistol courses over the years in all kinds of weather. Not only has it never failed me - even after thousands of rounds -, but I also really like the hi-vis sights, the large grip (I have large hands) and it's SA/DA trigger.

For me, it's going to have to be my Smith and Wesson 586-8

Though it's obviously not my Every Day carry gun, the Smith is for sure my favorite range gun, woods gun, nightstand gun, and SHTF gun.

6 inch barreled, 357 mag, sending an 158grain projectile at 1600fps, or an 125grain at 1800.

Extreme reliability, feels amazing in my hand, points naturally, eats the recoil due to the full length barrel lug, and long sight radius makes it incredibly accurate in conjunction with the cartridge.

Has a classic feel to it, and I have a great set up with it. I got a tactical 2x2x2 pouch, two basketweave speed loader pouches, each of them holds two speed loaders for a total of 4 speed loaders, and of course, a custom made leather holster for the gun, and a belt.

ALL basket weave

I'm a sucker for medium and large sized revolvers. Though I carry a Glock, I want to get a Ruger Sp101 for carry soon.
>>

Glock is the ultimate meme gun. They're overpriced for what you get honestly. They could at least put some fucking metal sights on the damn thing for 600 bucks. I mean I paid 580 bucks for my cz p-01 and its a full steel frame gun with a better trigger and is as reliable and as accurate

>>
>>32236970
That's just a pic you got off of google, right? The 586-8 has an internal lock.

Regardless, I have some questions for you:

1.) Did you have problems with a canted barrel or any other defects? I heard a lot of the 686s had issues.
2.) Why'd you opt for a new one as opposed to a used one? A lot of the complaints about the new manufacturing processes are definitely fuddlore, but you can typically find old ones in great shape for a nice price.
3.) How much did you pay?
4.) Why an SP101 over an LCR or J-frame?
5.) Would you recommend the new 586s over a 686+?
>>
>>32237069

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong since I'm no expert on the CZ P-01, but my carry gun is a Glock 26, this Glock is a lot smaller than that gun. I can for conceal carry insert a 10 rounder, while carrying 17 (or even 33) rounders separately.

Perhaps the trigger is better, but reliability? I don't think so. Though your gun might be more durable and for that reason more reliable in CERTAIN circumstances, most of us aren't navy seals falling off mountain sides, we carry our guns normally, and in such situations, I believe the Glock is most likely to NOT have a failure to feed when shooting it.

It also has no safety's, that's a HUGE plus for me.

And hell, for the sake of the argument, lets say your gun is objectively better, it doesn't change the fact that this is a "WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GUN" not a "WHAT IS THE BEST GUN" thread.
>>
>>32237069

first impressions, i like the ccp over the pps, trigger and grip particularly. i only have about 100 rounds through the ccp and they are famous for problems. I had one failure to feed and one failure of last round hold over with the first two mags. IDK at this point. but ill keep on testing.

Glocks work. Got it so if someone breaks into the truck I'm not (too) worried about losing a glock.

With that said I've been spending >$100 every week at the range on 9mm. Looking at getting into airsoft to practice without the cost. I'm finding plenty of PPQs, as well as 1911 and M9, airsofts but no G19 or P226.
>>
>>32237121

Yes it is, I'm posting from my laptop and I don't have a picture of mine on me right now, I took some on my phone I've posted on here before.

1.) The canted barrel, from what I understand, was only an issue with the Stainless Steel models (686's), but even if my model was known to suffer from that, I personally did not experience it, and I got a fully working gun with no issues

2.) New ones shoot better, yes, some of their parts might be more cheaply made, but due to modern machining, the tolerances (clearences?) are tighter, and you can get way more FPS out of a newer gun, than an older one. Not to mention, I do have a 586 No dash in 4 inches as well, but I don't shoot it, I have it stashed away purely as a collectors item, so buying a new one to shoot the hell out of and not treat like a safe queen, seemed like a good idea.

3.) I paid $600 since it was on sale

4.) The Sp101 comes in a 4 inch model as well, this barrel length is manageable for CC, while still having enough barrel length to get a good chunk of the 357's potential, a round I find very good for self defense, out of a snub nose 357's are pretty much 38+ps with even MORE recoil. The standard grip it comes with is very small, my hands are medium sized, so that's not really an issue, if anything, it just helps with CC'ing without printing. Also, 5 rounds help keep the cylinder smaller and is better for CC.

5.) I've heard the new 686's are more prone to having problems than the new 586's, this is partly due to the fact 686's have never stopped production, but the 586's came back recently, meaning, they worked out all the bugs on the 686's by the time they decided to bring back the 586's (remember, they're practically the same gun) but if you get a good one, then I imagine it's just as great a gun. Personally, I just love the classic blued gun with wooden grips. Stainless Steel is easier to maintain, but the aesthetic of the blue and wood is too beautiful, of course this is subjective.

Same guy who responded earlier, the 586-8 does have an internal lock, but the first thing I did when I got home was to take the gun apart and remove it.

It's not even noticeable, I plugged it too, to make it even less noticeable.

That's a glock 19 so that't why im comparing to my p-01

My p-01 has better ergos
My p-01 has a better trigger (da/sa decock)
My p-01 came with night sights for 580 bucks
My p-01 all steel frame absorbs recoil

This coming from someone that owns a 26 AND a 19. I'd rather carry a little heaver gun for a more shootable gun
>>
>>32237391

>4.)

Those are fair points about the SP101. Were you aware, however, that S&W is going to release a Model 66 that has a 2.75 inch barrel and full-length ejector rod soon? It should be pretty amazing for CC, especially considering the engineering changes they made to the 66 so that it can handle an all-magnum diet without the problems that the old ones had.

I was not aware. Typically Smith and Wesson doesn't tend to promote new projects that well.

Thank you I'll definitely be keeping that one in mind, if it does make it to production it sounds like a great EDC revolver.

And I don't mind fellow anon.

Why a Remington 1911 over any other though? Did you get a good price on it or something?
>>
>>32237648

I did.
I wanted a 1911 at the time, and I was actually planning to get a different one.
But Grabagun had them for like $100 less than other places, so I decided to get it.

I wasn't totally sold on the idea at the time, but I've been very pleased with it.

Yeah. I carry that with 110 grain Critical Defense in a moon clip + a second moon clip with the same load in a 35mm film canister as backup, since the gun came with a cylinder that was cut for moon clips from the factory. They're nice to have; the moon clips make for fast reloads and ensure that all of your rounds eject completely even with a shorter ejection rod.

I had considered the M&P Bodyguard myself as it seems like a pretty solid gun. The main reason I chose the gun in my picture over it was actually because I expect that the Bodyguard will get a v2 release at some point that corrects some of the few things I didn't like about it (ie polymer cylinder release latch, activation button placement on the laser, having to cycle through the strobe mode on the laser to turn it off).
>>
>>32238641
Which Sig is that? It looks glorious.
>>
>>32238737
looks like a sig p210 with nill grips
>>
>>32238714

That's interesting, I've never carried moon clips since I've never had a revolver that came with, or had one cut for their usage.

As you stated, they seem pretty handy for those reasons, though you'll lose the ability to do a tactical reload.

The Polymer cylinder release latch does suck, it's of very low quality, BUT, it's placed on a very ergonomic spot, at least for my tastes. The activation button placement on the laser is definitely not ergonomic, but it can be used and I figured out a perfect way how.

I imagine if you do carry a revolver such as ours, it's in a pocket correct? Well, you can slide your hand into your pocket, go to the rear sights, and once you feel them, scoot your thumb a little to the right, press down, and presto, when you pull it out the light will be on.

I did this in a situation where I was being followed at night in the street, but ultimately it didn't lead to anything. Of course, you can't do this in an instant, but if you have situational awareness, you can turn it on for what's about to come.

I find the strobe completely unnecessary, it's not a flashlight so it's not going to disorient anyone, is there any reason I'm missing why a laser would have a strobe function on a gun?

>I find the strobe completely unnecessary, it's not a flashlight so it's not going to disorient anyone, is there any reason I'm missing why a laser would have a strobe function on a gun?

You aren't missing anything. I'm pretty sure it was marketed with an eye towards pleasing the mall ninja crowd with the justification of "a strobe laser helps hide your position when you're doing a nighttime reenactment of the Miami/North Hollywood shootouts!" I don't really like it, but I don't mind it being there if you had some way of taking it out of the rotation to turn the laser on and off like you can with some of the laser grips.

Also, your point about the actuating the laser immediately before the draw as opposed to during the draw or immediately afterwards is a good one.

Absolutely, all the 629-4s had the endurance package upgrades, if you look mine has the longer cylinder notches for more positive engagement of the cylinder bolt, a key feature of the endurance upgrades.

I've put somewhere around 800 rounds of factory and handloaded magnum loads through it and it's still has the same amount of end shake and carry up in the timing as the day I bought it.

A 240gr on top of 20 grains of 2400 is my standard loading, going much higher and I get primers flatter than I like them to be. Haven't chronographed it yet.

All-around practical gun: Sig SP2022
Superb target pistol: heavily reworked CZ-75

The Sig because it's comfortable, accurate, easy to shoot, good sights, supremely reliable, and cheap. The CZ because it's been customized to suit every aspect of my preferences and is far more accurate than I am capable of.

What's the problem? Anon said his boyfriend fapped to my picture. The wheels of the internet are turning. I'd call that a positive thing.

I used to be all snobby about triggers and shit. The gun just feels right. It's light, powerful and reliable. What's not to like?

My 92FS feels best in my hand and looks sexy, my G21SF would be my choice for tac ops what with the tritium sights and tax light, and my LCP is great for EDC.

that sentence was just as autistic as you're original post
>>
>>32240893
Define "autistic." It sounds like you're just in search of an epithet to ridicule intellectuals, like you're some kind of black person or something.
>>
>>32240909
epithet, ridicule, intellectuals , someone's trying really hard to sound intelligent. google autism yourself.
>>
>>32240925
I know what autism is, but I tell you what. I'll Google it *for you* :^).
>autism
>a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts.

Note that it doesn't say:
>owning anime dolls and liking guns

Nothing autistic about anything I have posted.

Your posts, however, demonstrate that you have significant "difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people." We could be having an intelligent discussion, but your disorder prevents you from moving past the introduction phase. Instead, you choose to insult everyone you meet, perhaps in acknowledgement of the fact that you have no capacity for human empathy and are unable to form any kind of meaningful relationship with another person. Time to kill yourself.

an intelligent discussion would mean both parties are intelligent that's not you. you've got the writing talent of a 12th grader using as many big words as he knows to spruce up his paper because he thinks it will give him a better grade. and you're not even aware of it you don't come off as intelligent you sound like what you are .....wait for it..an autist

The reason you're projecting so much of your own personality onto me is because, again, you have no capacity for human empathy.

Here's a quick test. Your psychologist probably already gave it to you once and you memorized the answer, but try to answer the question at the end honestly. I expect this to be very difficult for you.

It's really not too bad; I start to feel discomfort in my palm before my wrist. Even then, I didn't notice much until after I had put around 100 rounds downrange. That being said, my hand was being slow, and generally not listening as well as it does normally, the next few days.
I haven't tried to fire it one-handed, but I feel confident that I COULD do it.

just because they aren't a bad gun doesn't make them ideal.

they definitely a great practical pistol already used by LEOs everywhere, and unquestionably a contender for best 9mm pistol or otherwise.

I don't have a problem with polymer or 9mm, but I feel 9mm is 'intermediary cartridge' of pistols, and people defend it the same way they defend 5.56mm.

It is a trade off for size, even if it doesn't compromise power.

it is an exceptional soldier/LEO 'duty' cartridge, and deserves acknowledgement even with the existence of the improved .40S&W

But if 9mm was the 5.56/5.45 of pistols, .45 acp would be the 7.62x39.

.45 acp is a minor trade off in range (although not as much as people seem to think) and somewhat in capacity (8 rounds standard, but plenty of 10+ round magazine options available for virtually all pistols, even 1911s)

But in its element as an offensive pistol cartridge and for close range CQB it is superior for hitting like a sledge and putting people on their ass.

Not to mention potentially less likely to over penetrate and cause unwanted collateral damage or unnecessary bloodshed.

And great for suppressed use, especially with subsonic cartridges.

That's a comfy story anon. My father was also an immigrant, but he was already red pilled in gun ownership because he worked on the Government's side as a under cover cop back in his original country.

He saw the necessity to owning guns to one's own personal safety. In regards to the Govenrment and in regards to bandits. Well... we have Dindus instead of bandits

I'd say my favorite is either one of these two.

The 1911 because i've owned and shot it since 1997 when I was 12 years old. It's always been very reliable and very fun to shoot. I take it out at least twice a month these days, though it sat neglected for quite a long time. Easily 15k+ rounds through it.

The USP because it never fails and it's awesome looking. Just look at it. Gorgeous guns. I always wanted one when I was a kid, and so it was on the top of my list when I started my adult collection. Maybe 2K rounds through it so far. Love it.
