It's bioware, they couldn't make decent character animations to save their life no matter how good the technology they had to work with was.

Hand guns are harder for obvious reasons... but if they are a standard semi-auto (i.e. not a revolver or some old school clip fed thing) then if they shoot when you grab it (so long as you have moved out of the path of the bullet and you aren't grabbing like a pussy) you will prevent the slide from moving an chambering another round. Meaning you would be effectively safe after the first shot. Unless they are well trained they will be two distracted with the ongoing scuffle to think to rack the slide and fire again. They will likely just pull the trigger like a paniced madman.

Or at best ditch the gun and switch to cqc (punch the shit out of you, take you to the ground, pull a knife etc).

But again I have to stress all of this is assuming you get the gun off target before they shoot, which is very hard. It can be pretty obvious if you are planning to make a move. Plus it usually isn't worth it unless they are literally just trying to murder you, in which case fuck it your going to die anyway.

Some advice, make it a habit to make elaborate arm movements when you talk. No gay like a fag but enough that if you start moving you arms around in preparation it will seem natural and they won't immediately shoot your ass.

Salarians believe in solving problems before there's anything to negotiate over, they'd execute the unarmed prisoner rather than allow them an escape attempt. They'd rather not even fight in the first place of course but when they do, bioplagues and surprise attacks.

Krogans, Batarians and Vorcha WANT you to try and disarm them.

Guys that have trained hard will disarm their attacker 95% of the time if they're within arms reach. If the gunman has any clue what he is doing he won't be within reach. In that case you're fucked.
