So I've got three 15 round Beretta 92 mags that came with it and one Mecgar 18 rounder. I noticed that the 15 rounders have this huge thing on the follower that doesn't seem to serve much purpose but obviously limits capacity. Could I chop off 3/4 of this lump on the bottom of the follower without issue to basically bubba my mags to have a 16-17 round capacity? Seems to me if I just leave a small portion left for the spring to rest on it'll be fine

Any reason to not get a ruger american for a full size handgun for the home?

Ive seen every video on it and the majority say its its good to go. Ive only seen 1 video with a complaint of thumb knuckles getting hit, but im pretty sure that was a false report now since every other reviewer has not had that problem.

This is my first 9mm, and i was planning to get a glock 17/19 or a cz75. But holy shit, when did the cheapest basic 9mm become 550+ dollars? I could have swore a year ago they were in the 400s. Ruger american is 450$ so im leaning toward that.

Ive tried vp9 and walther but i would like to stay in the sub 550 after tax. And i hate the sig triggers.

Ive dry fired the rugers trigger and its way better than a stock glock which is another pro towards it.

Yes glock and cz have the aftermarket but i feel i shouldnt have to spend an extra 100-200 bucks to replace parts on a stock gun.

15rd magazines like that were specifically engineered with a relaxation tolerance for reliability and longevity.

It is a physical block that stops you from overloading the magazine past the engineered limit.

It would probably be possible but then you have to worry about what you did to the long term reliability of the magazine putting extra stress on the magazine spring.

i did exactly that with Checkmate magazines for my duty pistol. you'll get about 17 rounds in there, but you might not always lock open on the last round. mine still work alright though.

that huge things there to prevent the spring from binding up when fully compressed. you might gain 1-2 rounds or the mag might fuck itself. up to you to take that risk.

>>
>>32230424
Don't do it you 'tard! That keeps you from binding up the spring. Also, it keeps the follower from shifting out of position in the magazine. Basically it's whole job is to make sure your mag works smoothly. Don't cut it off.

What's the minimum dimension a barrel needs to be properly free floated when you bed a stock?

Youtube says just the thickness of duct tape is fine, but AR handguards give the barrel at least a half inch.

Is there any science behind it or is it just bubba "dont let it touch" wisdom

also if you're bedding a rifle that originally needed an inlet in the stock behind the tang, do you still leave an inlet while you're bedding it or is it no longer necessary

I'm in the market for a revolver.

I am pinned between two choices. I originally was looking into a GP100 as the revolver of my choice, but I could get a S&W 686+ for 100 dollars more.

From what I hear, the GP100 has some minor quality control issues, they're a little harder to maintain, and they are a bit bulky, and apparently some people don't like the trigger. Also the grips are ugly as fuck IMO and I would basically need to replace them with the 50 dollar wood inset grips on Ruger's website.

However the 686+ offers an additional slot in the cylinder, it's a S&W so quality control isn't an issue, and from what I understand they can take larger pressures than the GP100 despite having 7 slots over the GP100's 6. Also much easier to maintain and polish.

Is dishing out the extra 100 dollars worth it for a 686+?
>>
>>32231685
Get a Colt. I've put over 3000 rounds between cleanings through both of mine and have not had a single malfunction so far.

Also, buy shit tons of cheap ammo and maybe even a cheap AR along side your SHTF one and practice practice practice. You'll have a severe advantage over everyone else if you are able to put accurate shots down range with every trigger pull.

That's what I figured, but an acquaintance of mine who actually owns a gun store swore that the 686+ cylinder didn't compromise on it's integrity. But you would be correct, I don't hand load so it really doesn't make a difference.
>>
I'm working on an A1 style build (not faithful repro) and the last thing I really need is an upper receiver. Don't need the assembly, already have barrel, bolt carrier group, furniture, etc. Just looking for an upper receiver with the same profile as an A1, so c7 would work too, or anything else with that seductive fixed carry handle style. My current lower is from Anderson if that presents any problem. I've got everything else all set to be multi-cal running 5.56 and .223. My heart died a little bit when I saw that c7 upper receiver in the Buy, Sell, Trade thread for a good price only to immediately see that it had already been snatched up.

In short:

Police trade-in Glocks and M&Ps can be had reliably for $350, $400 or so out the door.

In your shoes, I'd buy a police trade in Glock 23, a couple G19 magazines, a few G17 magazines, and a 9mm Glock 23 conversion barrel.

You now have a 9mm pistol and a .40 caliber pistol that's got all the aftermarket support of Glock and more of a proven track record than any of the other offerings at a lower pricepoint.

>>32230820
you can skimp on buffer, upper and lower receiver, gas tube, trigger, pins, and furnaiture if you wish and the gun will still work fine.

Do NOT skimp on optics, flashlight, barrel, or gas block, though.

>>32231685
DD is a benchmark for AR quality. You can buy more expensive guns like from LaRue or Noveske or ODIN Works, but generally above the DD pricepoint performance tapers off quickly.

The general rule of thumb is that if a dollar bill can slide smoothly from the tip of the barrel to the receiver you're good to go, but more won't hurt either.

>>32233636
guns can be weird animals, some just don't like certain mags, ammo, etc. that others aren't bothered by. I bought a $1800 piston AR and on the first range trip it didn't feed from lancers. Not a huge deal because eventually the gun fed from them after the break in period, but it was kinda annoying.

Shoot it for 250-300 rounds to break it in and get used to it. Any jams/malfunctions before the break in is over don't count against it. After the break in, apply a thin layer of lubrication over any internal part that's showing wear (ie. is shiny) and any external part you want to protect from rust (if you don't have a temperature and humidity controlled storage area)

Kindof /k/ related question:

Basically, I have a BA in History and currently work security and applied last week to do Corrections. I was contemplating a masters program (from an actual school not that online crap). I know if I do it then obviously any security/corrections job would make me a supervisor but I'd ideally want to do Law School after and practice criminal Law. The catch is my grades were shit in College. Would I have a chance at law school if I did great in a CJ program? If not should I still go for a masters in CJ and try to get those sweet promotions in similar job fields I'm in?

Also, should I get a stealth gear appendix holster for my Shield? What about magguts to increase capacity? I've heard they cause reliability issues so...

Never integrate magazines into your carry rotation that you are less than 1000% sure of their reliability. Test every magazine *with your self defense ammo* to make sure it works. If it does, you're good to go, if not, delegate it to range use or ask for a replacement.

But seriously, I understand I need to do well on the LSAT's. My question was more of should I get my masters in Criminal Justice and THEN think about law school or just work for a while and then think about Law School and forget about the Masters in CJ. My thoughts were basically "If law school doesn't work out I'll still find a decent job with a Masters".

Also, money isn't an issue with school so factor that out of your advice.

First gun, Cuckifornian, not 21 yet so no handfuns. Please advise.

Is a .22 LR starter a meme or actually good for practice? I'm not poor so ammo cost is of no concern and I don't want to buy a gun I'll basically never ever use outside of basic firearms practice. Don't really want to hunt little animals or plink cans. Ammo price is the main boon of a 22. Get the .308 raifu for hunting or scattergat for home defense, depending on whether you are surrounded by deer or niggers. I'd go Mossberg over Remington but they're basically the same. Featureless semi autos are good too. If you want a pistol grip or AR just wait though. 22 is one of the most fun calibers to shoot. it makes sense to start off with one for so many reasons. you will want one at some point. everybody owns a 22
>>
>>32237683
.22 is not a meme, the absence of significant recoil, sound, and overpressure wave make it far and away the most efficient actual firearm caliber to cement your fundamentals before you move up.

I shot bb guns and pellet guns for several years before I shot a .22 and shot a .22 for five years before I really shot centerfire seriously and I attribute that very deliberate growth process and the fundamentals it developed as the primary contributors to why I shoot as well as I do.
>>
>>32237683
When people talk about "starting with a .22," they're talking about youth shooters. My dad started me on .22 rifles, .22 pistols and a 20 gauge shotgun, but I was also like 12 years old. If you're over 18, there's no reason not to go straight to centerfire, especially if you want your gun to double as a self-defense weapon or for hunting. That said, .22's can be fun if you can find ammo for them.
>>
>>32237762
7/10, a centerfire rifle with a scope and semi-auto carbine added to the collection are probably the best next steps

Any plate carrier will hold pouches on just fine. If you know even a tiny bit about sewing and mending you can minimize the defects on even condor carriers and make them do actual work.

What buying expensive carriers gets you is generally higher quality materials and more regular stitching. If you just want to slap pouches on it and leave them there those things don't matter. If you are going to be using your carrier for a great variety of mounting and will be modifying it regularly or are absolutely committed to reducing weight by tenths of an ounce they are more important.

The more you commit to putting in all the small parts yourself, the better AR you can build for your money.

Stripped lower, then play around on
http://www.ar15.com/gunstruction/
until you find a combination of parts you like for ~$800 (all costs on the site are MSRP, so in reality they are lower.) Finally, before you pull the trigger, go to ARG and ask if they have any part substitutions they'd suggest without increasing the cost of the build.

Just oil everything metal, then dry it off. This will leave a thin film of oil that protects against rust. Then lube as normal.
Just touch it, you should be able to tell the difference between dry metal and oiled.
>>
>>32239925
Real simple. Take apart, look for rust. if there isn't rust, you're ok. If you coat the gun in a thin coat of oil, that can act as an additional preservative.

Alternately, you can install some insulating material around/over the window to keep the cold out and then complain non stop to the landlord until they fix it. This had the added benefit of keeping you and your boo cozy til spring time.

>>32240099
Any metal that's exposed that might rust. Skip the striker if it bothers you and just oil the outer parts. The word against oiling that part is because some fools won't wipe the oil away, causing fouling to collect and jam the mechanism.
Honestly, the finish is supposed to protect from rust, but oiling never hurts.

>>32240429
For general marksmanship, just keep uniform breathing and break the shot at the bottom of your respiratory trough (when your lungs are comfortably empty after breathing out.) If you have to hold your breath, hold after breathing out until your lungs are comfortably empty instead of taking a big breath in. If you see your sights blurring at all, breathe regularly again for a few seconds and try again. The general rule is: don't hold your breath for more than three seconds. This is because when your body begins to get deprived of oxygen, one of the first things it sacrifices is fine optical clarity, and without maximal optical clarity it's easy not to see *exactly* what your sights are doing and throw your shot off.

For precision marksmanship there are several more advanced techniques, a chapter in John Plaster's excellent "Ultimate Sniper" covers them in great detail, but I assume by the nature of the way you asked your question you are asking for general techniques.

You need enough weight to get black powder to build up enough pressure to actually explode as opposed to burning.

Easier to do that and work with bigger projectiles. Also big heavy projectiles work better for killing since they aren't moving as fast.

Cartridges have nice self contained spaces for powder to more efficiently explode.

You can get one of those surplus Hi-Powers coming in currently, though condition on them may vary and if you do go that route make sure you inspect the lower barrel locking lugs, see pic related.

If you save up $150 more, then you can get one of the refurbished surplus guns Mach 1 is selling. They're overhauled completely and any worn parts are replaced with new ones along with a new finish

Have somebody video you and use the video as an AAR of your mistakes.

Carbine classes are largely a waste. Money is better spent on ammo used wisely to train.

So /k/ I made a 12ga pipe shotgun with no heat treat, originally it had a 26 3/4 in barrel, but I never fired it with said length. I had a unrelated problem afterwards and needed a 10in section of pipe, and being Jewish I chopped what I needed from the barrel. I did the test fire with the new length, multiple times and nothing went wrong, but now I want to throw a 29 1/2 inch barrel on it, my question is, how will this affect the properties of my shotgun, will it put additional pressure on the receiver? Will it increase/decrease recoil? Will it explode?

Why aren't modern production occlusive optics more popular? Something like the Vietnam era OEGs.

It seems like it'd fill the perfect niche for survivalists or preppers. It's cheap (they could retail for like $50 or even less), durable, and doesn't require batteries which is a huger prepper plus.

They take a bit of getting used to using, but will function just like a red dot once you are acclimated.

Anything thats in line with the bore needs to be of good quality. So: barrel, bolt & carrier (the 3 most important), recoil spring and buffer.
The last 2 don't need to be anything super special, just don't buy the cheapest shit you can find. Sprinco chrome-silicon buffer spings are excellent. Finally, a good trigger will greatly enhance the shootability of the rifle. Anything from Giessele, Hiperfire, ArGold, Timney, etc are good options.

Friendo, overstabilization exists and BC is not a magical property imbued by the barrel a round is shot through.

1:7 is optimized for for 77 grain, 1:8 is designed for anything more than 55 but less than 77 (where most .223 and .224 cal rounds fall) so why wouldn't you choose the more efficient option?

RELOADING QUESTION

>>32267275

>>
>>32267468

Assuming you're talking about pistols, there are some guns that allow the controls to be switched from one side of the gun to the other.

The HK USP pistol comes to mind, and I think you can switch the mag release on glocks, but i'm sure there are others.

But even for pistols that do not have this function, you just have to learn to engage the controls with your left hand. Some guns will be easy to master. Others (usually old weapons) will be very difficult.

As for rifles, aside from a few infamous examples, shooting lefty wont be a problem for the vast majority of them.
>>
>>32267557
I was really thinking about rifles, but I always think that I can be hit by a flying super hot piece of metal since guns are made for right-handed, are there guns variants for left-handed?
>>
>>32267588

there are left handed ARs for sure.

however a lefty can shoot and operate a right handed AR just fine. The brass wont hit your face or arm.

some more expensive rifles/submachine guns have bottom ejection, or are capable of ejecting in either direction. the P90, Steyr Aug, KelTec RDB, etc.

I currently shoot a Glock 19 from my gun club (cant own guns myself yet) around every other week and noticed that I dont hit shit if I aim dead center (25m/30 yard range), but if I aim at the upper right corner I atleast hit somewhere near the center.
Most people in my gun club just say that the Glock is difficult to shoot precise at longer distances and that I still anticipate the recoil, which I strongly agree with. So my question would be if I should continue aiming at the center of the target until I no longer automatically pull the gun down or should I aim to simply hit the target, meaning compensating for my error?
>>
>>32267937

Dry fire practice either at the range or at home is a good way to overcome recoil anticipation/flinching. Focus on keeping your sights on target as you dry fire over and over again. Use snap caps (dummy rounds) if you're worried about hurting the gun.

One exercise which has always worked wonders for me is to have another person load up your magazine, and in that magazine, have them randomly place 2-3 dummy rounds.

Now, you will see exactly how your are flinching, because you will pull the trigger and expect the gun to go off (recoil). However, and of course, the gun will not go off because of the dummy round, and you will be watching your sights dip/heel in anticipation.

You can also do the loading yourself, but I think it's better to have another person do it, just so you have absolutely no idea where the dummy rounds are in the magazine.

So to answer your question: Always aim for the center of the target, find your weakness (we all have one) and minimize it.
