It's like the unsexy looking B-24 Liberator bomber who did the job all the time. Then again, everyone remembers the sleek B-17 Flying Fortress which was good, but not that good.

It was good at what it was supposed to be : a reasonably efficient and easily mass produced weapon. In the context of WWII it was perfectly at home.

The French fucked up US test models by straight-up re-chambering them for 30-06 while not taking in account that for example Chauchat ejector was designed for 8mm Lebel which is rimmed round while 30-06 is rimless(not to mention that it's way more powerful).

However the French-used guns were good enough, they certainly didn't have much competition aside from Lewis which was also good.

The M14 isn't a good marksman rifle. It's something really hard to make accurate, and when you do make it accurate, it's hard to keep it accurate for long.

The Army and Marines both have spent millions on trying to make the M14 into a marksman rifle instead of just buying brand new AR-10s that have the same accuracy out of the box for a lot less time and money.
