It works fine but it's pretty redundant.

Unless you're competing in a USPSA major/minor power factor competition, just do 9mm. If you want more oomph, do 10mm.

It was made as an attempt to save face on multiple fronts, one that the FBI lost a shootout due to poore training/ shooting skills, and the other that the round developed to avoid actually admitting and addressing those deficiencies ended up exposing them again. The impetus behind the testing and creation of potential new service calibers wasn't exactly poor shooting on behalf of the FBI, it was poor terminal performance of the ammo they were issuing at the time.

115gr Winchester Silvertips penetrated 10-11 inches into bare gelatin. Coincidentally one lucky projectile penetrated through a perp's arm, and torso, but stopped one inch short of his heart.
The same load has resoundingly poor performance in most test events.

Fuckfaces in the gun community like Ayoob had always recommended these higher velocity 9mm loads over heavier rounds. It was conventional(fudd) wisdom that 9mm's saving grace was high velocity, and it primarily did its damage through that. Listening to this absurd ignorance and adopting service ammo with no real testing critera created the whole situation in the first place.
To think that we've been shooting things for hundreds of years but only began studying wounding mechanics in recent history is obnoxious.

.40 has always been easy to find. It's just never been popular due to poor recoil characteristics and low capacity. .40 is .25 cents a round, 9mm is .20 cents a round. That's not an insignificant difference. Now that police departments are willing to admit that, yeah, it's not THAT big a difference ballistically between 9mm and .40, more shots on target > slower aimed shots, since most cops will mag dump anyway.

I'll agree with you on most of what you said, but every gun in .40 has, at MOST, less than 4 rounds than it's 9mm counterpart.

And this is the extreme examples, such as the difference between the 5906 and the 4006, and the CZ 75 in 9mm and 40.

Most guns have a round difference of 2.

Unless you're shooting Limited (or Limited 10, the division for people who want to win by default) or Single Stack (or the equivalent IPSC classes, Standard and Classic), then there's no reason to shoot .40 S&W. Either you can shoot 9mm and make Major or there is no Major (Production).

So, why's it bad? People say it under-performs but how so? I'm genuinely curious. It doesn't seem that terrible and from what I understand, it's a heavier bullet than most 9mm loads traveling at nearly the same velocity. Wouldn't that be good? I don't know shit about ballistics.

It's fantastic for pistol caliber carbines.
The extra weight negates all snappy-ness people tend to complain about. It's a solid home defense, small/medium game, target and SHTF set-up.
