This one does not count. Fuel tanks were only there for long distance travelling and would be drained before battle.
And who is going to shoot at your rear in a convoy anyway ?

Both the BMP-1 and BMP-2 were the best designs of their era. You can try to disprove me but you can't. In terms of armor protection, armament, mobility and transportation capability they were all a notch ahead of the competition. And in case of the BMP-1, there was no competition at all.
