In my state there is no registration so with that I wouldn't give a shit about the lack of paperwork. As long as the serial number doesn't link the gun to some homicide I'm fine.

So find an anonymous computer/internet cafe where the search won't be linked to you, and plug the serial no. into the search.

If it pops up as stolen, leave the gun in a good hiding place/cache against a rainy day/SHTF/WROL/LOL situation.

If not stolen, use as normal. You bought it second hand, what happened to it before hand/how it was acquired/how many owners it has had is immaterial.

I wouldn't go to the police if it is stolen though, they'll just throw it into an evidence locker and eventually commandeer it for personal LEO gun collections or scrap it since so many police chiefs are nogunzforcivilians/bloodinthestreets/forthechildren anti-liberty types.
