Let's say hypothetically that my dad used to have a gun and that he gave this gun to my uncle way back. Let's say I just found out about said hypothetical gun. Let's also say that my dad didn't acquire this firearm through legitimate channels, hypothetically. What would I have to do in order to own said weapon legally

What illegitimate channels?

Idk. I don't think it would be anything to shady. But he definitely wanted access to protection while he was at work in a store in the ghetto in Chicago. Hell maybe it was just a straw purchase. Remember this is a hypothetical. I don't know all the details I just need to know if it doesn't have paperwork how can I claim it
In my state there is no registration so with that I wouldn't give a shit about the lack of paperwork. As long as the serial number doesn't link the gun to some homicide I'm fine.

If it wasn't stolen then literally all you have to do is say this is mine. Assuming your uncle takes no issue with it.

I know it's not stolen and Illinois doesn't have a registration. I am. It 100%on whether it has a crime on it or not. I doubt it though. Like I said it was probably a straw purchase. Hypothetically of course

Is there a way to check that without going to the police?

Try this OP
http://www.hotgunz.com/
Supposed to be a free stolen guns database made and maintained by gun owners.
So find an anonymous computer/internet cafe where the search won't be linked to you, and plug the serial no. into the search.
If it pops up as stolen, leave the gun in a good hiding place/cache against a rainy day/SHTF/WROL/LOL situation.
If not stolen, use as normal. You bought it second hand, what happened to it before hand/how it was acquired/how many owners it has had is immaterial.

Sorry to samefag the thread twice, but this also has some stolen gun database stuff.

I wouldn't go to the police if it is stolen though, they'll just throw it into an evidence locker and eventually commandeer it for personal LEO gun collections or scrap it since so many police chiefs are nogunzforcivilians/bloodinthestreets/forthechildren anti-liberty types.
Fucking cops.

Thanks I'll check it out when I see it. It's supposed to be a compact 9mm beretta but I don't know anything else about it.
