Gear thread - New magazine edition

I want to try and make a magazine for the gear threads over the next year with monthly issues. Still working out the details, but I plan on doing a cover sort of how pic related and /arg/ used to do and then possibly "interviewing" one trip fag a month on their gear. Hopefully people save the interview and STOP ASKING DUMB QUESTIONS, but I doubt it.
So, post the best pictures of your gear that you have and the winner of this month will go on the cover of the Jan. 2017 issue of GQ.

Thanks fags

Now there's an image that takes me back.

Where do the rest of you wear your battle belts? Hip, waist, or some high-speed location that I never thought of?
>>
>>32205789
inner velcro belt goes through pant loops battle belt hooks to the velcro inner belt.

needless to say, it's usually where I wear my belt.

To the guy asking about Russian gear; SRVV, SSO, R-Karbid, Gruppa 99, Tactic-9, and Fort are top tier stuff.
ANA, BARS, SPLAV, Giena are also good but some of their stuff isn't as quality(?).
Not sure about Giena but I've heard good things overall, higher end stuff mostly aimed at airsofters.
Splav is mostly consumer outdoors equipment.
ANA and BARS make stuff for the Russian military but I've heard their side products (like ANA plate carriers) are kind just average, targeted at airsofters.
Techicom and BTK mostly make stuff for the Russian military and are overall pretty nice, but not a lot in terms of selection.
No idea on Stich.

As a ruski I can say that that's a pretty accurate summary. Stich is meh designed and mostly just copies, quality is fine though.

SpecialRussianShop, Ebay, GreyShop(Although I heard they've been having problems with customs), there are plenty others I forgot about.
For SRVV, Gruppa 99, Giena Tactics, and R-Karbid they have their own websites, just google it, you might need to contact Gruppa 99 and R-Karbid.
Some of the other brands have their own website but they aren't exactly easy to use if you can't read Russian.

For Gorkas SSO is definitely the nicest but you can't go wrong with ANA or BARS, even SPLAV makes pretty good gorkas.
>>

Waiting for your reply I stumbled upon them (greyshop) on youtube. They have what I want, but yes apparently shipping can take forever thanks to customs bullshit. Not too big an issue though. Cheers.

I've never picked out frames not from the eye doctor. Do I just order these and have them do the stuff with my lenses or...? I doubt anyone here knows.

Thanks, by the way. They're surprisingly inexpensive.
>>
>>32206962
Some places won't, but yeah, just buy the frames and take them to your optometrist to get custom lenses.
I've done it a few times, with frames my optometrist didn't carry or if I found frames cheaper online.

kommandostore does, but I can tell you offhand that's an XS in tall for something like 36-37 chest. I wear size 6 (which is the regular length version) and I'm pretty thin. These sorts of buckles are much stronger than say your plastic ITW side release buckles. The cobra buckles are rated in the thousands of lbs of force while the plastic side release buckles are rated in the tens lbs. If you're rappelling, doing helicopter shit, or getting your shot ass dragged around by the belt, you want the cobra buckle.

So by proxy is Voodoo Tactical also a shit? I've always heard they are basically the same.

And by another proxy, is 5.11 like babby entry tier? They actually seem legit, but I'm starting to see just how many companies are above them.

Hmm. 1" plastic buckles are rated to 300 pounds, larger ones more. And they're used for quick release on plate carriers made by quality companies. And if you're climbing, aren't you wearing a separate harness from your battle belt?

I'm not arguing that stronger isn't better, but my $80 belt better not be stabbing me every time I bend over, that's all I'm saying. I'll have to test it out in person when I find one at a shop.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one to be dicked around by PSA.

>>32217507
Yeah I'm sure I've understated the rating for those side release buckles, but I also understated the rating for the cobra buckles. I think they're in the 7000 Newton range or so.

>And if you're climbing, aren't you wearing a separate harness from your battle belt?

Yeah see this is what doesn't make any sense to me. Why the riggers belt inside the battle belt? I feel like the riggers belt should be through your pants around your waist and the inner belt for the battle belt really could be any duty belt.

Sorry to hear your nice belt isn't feeling too good. Maybe hit it with a dremel or start using it as your actual belt.

Pressing the side release on the plastic buckle holding the hip belt on doesn't seem like it would take too much time.

Take the shit off your helmet band. I understand the aesthetic, but it's useless (are you seriously going to need CLP that much on patrol you need quick access? and you need a stripper clip at quick access in a firefight?) and will fall out unless it's secured with 550 cord.

Tighten up the LBV so it's not all floppy. I'd put the upper magazine pouch right at your nipple line so the weight's at your chest instead of your belly. Either secure those belt loops and run a 1st line/2nd line with it riding really high, or get a cartridge belt for it.

Take the machete off and put it on your pack, or if you run with a buttpack (make sure you get the one with the weird loop shit instead of gromets), secure it to there.

Anything on your chest and general front should be firefight quick-access (this goes for place carriers too). Reduce bulk. Personally, my ALICE rig is one of those. The belt has a 200 round SAW pouch as a dump/utility on the left, a 2-quart cantine on the right, and a IFAK pouch with a modern IFAK refill. Buttpack secured by-the-book on the back.
Alternately I run the two disconnected. LBV runs extra high, belt has an H-harness and a 20-round pouch for quick-access 20-rounders for immediate return fire. LBV is just an ammo carrier. Ordered an older canvas buttpack with the gromets to fit on the buttpack.

Being a poorfag is no excuse to be sloppy. If anything it's less, because you should be paying more mind to what gear you have and its placement to make it count.

Congrats on getting your carrier in.

Obviously hydration is important so get on that.
IFAK is important too, and it seems like you still need plates?

Consider moving your pistol mags to the left side of the carrier. Your front is getting a little thick and it is important to keep the front profile thin for going prone.

the 1.0 verson they sell now is 500d cordura. From what it holds up fine. mine is the older one. I haven't talked to anyone with the 2.0

the only issue with he banshee is that the quick release clips in the shoulders can be uncomfortable if you wear a heavy pack with it. The also usually charge too much for them now days. I got mine for around $100 and that was what made them so popular. they were the best plate carrier for a budget price.

>Fully custom airframe helmet, with modular powered attachments system and mask system
>experimental multicam vest unknown contractor manufacture, can yall identify it?

The helmet isn't Crye's, it's Artisent's. Crye Associates worked with Artisent, Inc. on the mockup for the US Army's Future Force Warrior project. Fun fact: Artisent is Ops Core's sister company. I remember I was a kid when Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter came out. I was so interested in some of the gear that I sent an email (probably sounded really autistic) asking Artisent if the helmet was really rifle resistant. I got a reply from a woman named Viktoria Rogers politely telling me to piss off. I remember seeing her name again years later on one of Ops Core's press releases. I was able to connect the dots from there. Basically, that helmet was the prototype to what is now known as the Ops Core FAST Ballistic helmet.

The vest is Crye's gen 1 CAGE Chassis, which was also tested in the US army's Future Force Warrior project. The chassis was pretty radical since it used non standard ceramic plates made by Ceradyne for greater coverage than standard SAPI plates. They were sold commercially for a short period. The vest even had a Hollywood debut along with the rest of Crye's gen 1 gear in the first live action Transformers movie (worn by Captain Lennox and his team). Every now and then you will see one of them pop up on Ebay for a very very hefty price....a gear collectors dream.

I wore that original Crye Chassis at SHOT Show many years ago and at that time I was wearing an IBA every day and we were just starting to see IOTVs but I hadn't been issued mine yet. I put that Chassis on and it felt amazing compared to my IBA, like a cozy hug from a turtle shell. It was wonderful. I was so excited to wear an IOTV after because when I told my buddy about it he said his IOTV was "just like that."

This is what true disappointment feels like.
>>
Also been wearing my new Salomon Speed Assaults and they're great. They weigh noticeably less than my low-cut MOAB despite having a mid-cut, and are super well ventilated. No idea how they'll hold up but so far I'm impressed.
>>
>>32228046
I'd rather wear an IBA again than an IOTV to be honest. The IOTV is crazy bulky on the front and cumberbund and the quick release system is shit.
>>
>>32228099
yeah the IOTV is shit

RATS tourniquet: yes or no? I want to have a tiny little "oh fuck I got shot" pouch on my shooting belt that consists of the following:
>ITS Tactical EDC Slimline Pouch
>Israeli Bandage
>Tourniquet
>Sterile gloves
Unfortunately, a CAT or SOF-T TQ wouldn't fit in the pouch with the other stuff. RATS TQ seems to have mixed reviews and some folks seem to think they're dishonest. What's the truth on them?
>>
>>32229073
14ga is correct size for popping tension pneumothorax
>>
>>32219138
>>
>>32229107
I have an its slimline. I keep a sof-t and a quick clot sponge. What i should have done is spent the $100 and got the package with the pouch, z fold gause and a soft-t. Ratz arent good, nor will it fit in the pouch with an izzy. The only option you have, me thinks, is the Swat.
>>
>>32229107
RATS look too thin, like thin enough to cause the kind of damage old anti-TQ people rant about. And they look annoying to apply.

Stick with a CAT or SOFT.

I'd add occlusive seals to your pouch. They are small, and I think they are honestly as important as TQs, just not as operator-fashionable since you can't hang them off your MOLLE. Occlusive seals are the TQs of the torso.
>>
>>32229107
RATS is dishonest in that they guys who make them literally started another company called TCCC so they could put a label on them that said "TCCC Approved", which is pretty misleading considering it's not recommended by CoTCCC, the actual Committee on Tactical Casualty Care. Just put the TQ in a separate pouch and use the space for some QuickClot or Celox gauze.
>>
>>32230306
>"TCCC" approved
Oh boy, that's low.
>>
>>32229960
I agree, but in my experience the tq and quick clot fill it the fuck up
>>
>>32230341
How much are you willing to spend? The new Blue Force Gear Micro TKN looks very compact. They're expensive if you buy with the medical supplies but if you are willing to find the stuff separately it should be more reasonable.

What are some good, small chest rigs with full/substantial Velcro on the back?

I want to add a small chest rig (probably 3 or 4 ar mags, an IFAK, maybe a commo pouch) to my new PC which has a large Velcro field on the bottom.

The 762tactical mini operator looks good, and I like the new D3CR, but I want to stay around 100-120 pouches included. I have a minimav and that's about the right size (maybe even a little wide).

Besides comfort, how much does 550 cord help? does it make it any less floppy?

I personally haven't gone innawoods with ALICE so I can't say it's comfortable after extended wear, but it seems fine just wearing it.

Can anyone run down the Crye AVS for me? What are my radio carry options (I like the integrated pouches on the 6094) and is it better/more comfortable than the 6094? That's my frame of reference. Any killer features that make the AVS a must-have? I got looking at it for lighter weight and the zip on back panels but I am really not inspired by either panel they have there on their site and I can't tell if it has enough benefits to make the change from a 6094 I like.

Is a Crye CPC really worth 2-3x the cost of a 6094 (depending on sales)? I saw it while I was looking at the AVS and it looks cool but again I don't know what the score is.
>>
>>32233356
hen I was in the Army I knew a fellow gear enthusiast that owned an AVS and swore it was the most comfy PC he owned (also has a Banshee, PIG, and 6094). He specifically stated that the harness is what made everything so good.
>>
>>32233356
The AVS is simply one of the 3 most comfortable carriers ever. Crye does this weird and amazing thing where the cummerbund actually helps distribute the weight, even moreso if you run the SSTKO or whatever straps down to a belt. Watch out though, a fully kitted AVS depending on your preferences will run you close to 1k. The platebags themselves offer no comfort, it all comes from the Harness and the load distibution. I regret trading my AVS away but it's all worth it in the end. You can use JPC MBITR pouches if you want to run integrated comms, they fit underneath the cumberbund flaps attatched to the front platebag. It's a pretty sex carrier, and is the standard among non-snowflake special ops groups here in the US for a reason
>>
>>32233681
Out of curiosity what are the other 2 comfy PCs?

CPC and LV-MBAV, because the CPC has a similar pdding system and the MBAV is basically all stretch except the necessary re-enforcement pieces so it hugs you really well. The beauty of the AVs Is not the comfort, it's the modability. Want 3 M4 pouches up front? There's a flap for that. Just molle space? There's a flap for that too. 7.62 mags, kangaroo pouches? Flaps. 2 band cummerbund? 3 band cumbering? MBITR pouches? No cummerbund in a traditional sense, just the harness? Side plates of various sizes? Quick release or not? Which side do you want the shoulder buckle on? All of these are customizable. Don't even get me started on the zip on back panels. Great things those are. The full /comfy/ feeling is just a bonus if you ask me. Not my pic btw.

Damnit, not the guy who asked, but I'm starting to regret my 6094 purchase now.

Going to try to get a hold of a CASS belt from LBT that helps distribute the weight of the PC to the hips. (Not that it's uncomfortable to begin with, but of course I want to maximize comfort and reduce fatigue wherever possible.)
>>
>>32235301
LBT no longer manufactures that.
>>
>>32235318
Eh?

I'm going to have to check out one of these other PCs in another color though for a true comparison.

Why the fuck is there another thread?
>>32232331

Anyways,
Currently getting questions together for the interviewees of the magazine, what are some questions you would like answered from specific trips and general questions?
>>
>>32235424
What's the whole 6 mags vs 8 mags (180 vs 240 rnds) debate about? Is 6 for routine patrols and 8 for assaults? Does the mage in your rifle add to that count or is it separate (6 or 6+1)? How do you recommend we carry these mags on a PC, 6 single mas pouches, or three double?
>>
>>32235607
Why use either of those numbers and not just 4? 1 in the gun, 3 on your front. Or 5? Its literally what you feel best with the fuck is wrong with you.
>>
>>32235646
I'm asking about standard load outs. I've seen photos of my .mil friends and the always have 6 mags in their TAP.
>>
>>32235703
Shit, meant to say 8 in their TAP
>>
>>32226400
this is so embarrassing
>>
>>32235646
>>32235703
>>32235714
I should also point out that nearly everyone who posted gear in this threads is running either 6 or 8 mags, I'm simply asking about the logic behind this.
>>
>>32235937
Its all about training. I was trained to fire 2-4 rounds and move and dont fucking stop until I am able to stab the fucker in the face if I wanted to while somebody whos trained to continuously fire does his job. People who willy nilly carry mags don't have much training. I carry the amount I will use though I never expect to use more than just that. At worst case I'll carry 10 more mags in my pack if need be but I don't have to have them all set up on me at all times. Plus each load out is for different purposes much like each weapon. You aren't going to sit there covering fire and sustaining fire out of an M4, you are going to engage, move, engage, move, engage, move and so forth. With a 249 or M27 (lel) you are going to sustain and provide covering fire. Hell in real combat I'd never use anything outside of semi auto either. Just trained differently.
