Handguns are the most versatile. Good for HD and carry. FN, glock, and CZ are some that /k/ approves of.
You want to get a rifle eventually. Stick to AR and AK platforms. Get an AR if you want it to shoot flat out to 300y but not be effective past that, and an AK if you want the bullet to drop past 300y but it's actually effective if you just quick adjust your sights. There's trade-offs with the intermediates, eventually you'll want a .308.
Don't fall for the .22 first gun meme, gun recoil doesn't knock you back. You don't need to build up to higher calibers, that's ridiculous.
