So im thinking about up a Winchester 94 in 30-30 for $350 from my LGS.

Anything I should know about them?
>>
Quality took a dive after 1964 thanks to bean counters but they're still pretty nice rifles. That's a good deal.

Hornady also makes some fancy ballistic-tip ammo for them to eke another ~50 yards of range out of the rifle without risking spitzer chainfires.
>>
It's nerf or nothin
>>
>>32190285
Man I always like theese and revolvers and double barrel shotguns as a kid.
Always wanted to be cowboy.
Fuck this country laws.
>>
>>32190285
They kick like hell. That said, they were designed by our lord and savior JMB and are faultlessly reliable.

>>32190579
Where do you live, anon?
>>
>>32190285
My next Gun will be a lever action 30-30 amd I love those sights but I dont know what they are called or were to get them, can anyone point Me in the right direction?
>>
>>32190605

So if a 30-30 kicks hard, does a 45-70 blow your shoulder off?

I have a Steyr M95 Carbine and its quite brutal shooting prone.
>>
>>32190285

I've owned a bunch of guns over the years. I really enjoy lever guns. There's nothing wrong with a .30-30 but they don't blow my skirt up. I really enjoy them in .22lr, calibers matching your revolver, or .45-70government.

.22s are a barrel of fun, especially since it's back on shelves now.

.357mag or .460xvr revolver/rifle combos are a shitload of fun for steel shoots.

.45-70governments with moderate loadings put a ton of energy on target without significant recoil. You generally can't shoot the monster loads made for the Ruger #1 from the lever guns but the lever loads will put down everything in North America.

I'm all for another gun being sold but think about it a little before you drop the dough.

I kind of want to see what a chain fire in a Levergun looks like at least once. From a safe distance of course. For science.
>>
>>32190800
The Marlin is the one in 45-70, and it is properly weighted. It's like shooting a big fat 30-30, if that makes any sense.

The Winchesters are a relic from a day when rifles were meant to be worn more than shot. They are light and sturdy. Which means they kick and the steel buttplate hurts.
>>
>>32190800
A .45-70 in modern pressures kicks harder than any centerfire round in common usage. You have to get into rare shit like .577/450 or the safari magnums to find cartridges with more powder burnt.
>>
>>32190832
Taofledermaus has I think two videos on it, check em out.
>>
So I walked away from the Winchester 94 (for now).

Which is better, the Winchester 94 or the Marlin 30-30?

I'm also contemplating getting a pistol caliber lever action to have a matching revolver.
>>
>>32191742
>So I walked away from the Winchester 94 (for now).
For $350 the Winchester will be a fine cheap rifle.
>>
>>32191742
I like Marlins. I have a Glenfield Model 30a in 30-30. It has decent kick but it's an extremely reliable gun.
>>
fun fact: 30-30 has the exact same ballistics as 22lr
>>
I would do .44mag or .45-70 over .30-30 but maybe that's just because I already shoot those two cartridges.
>>
>>32191742
Partial to the Marlin because of the side ejection and, arguably, it's a stronger rifle. Easier to put different sights on even a red dot if that's your thing. Winchester needs this funky side plate unless it's an angle eject model.
Marin is a little bulkier though but you can handle it.
>>
>>32191750

Is it still worth $350 if its been refinished and reblued?

>>32194284

http://www.armslist.com/posts/6138469/tacoma-washington-rifles-for-sale--vintage-marlin-336-30-30-jm-stamped-manufactured-1975

Might offer $300 and go from there, he has the scope mounts but do they come pre drilled and tapped from the factory or is that custom work?

If its custom work, ill just leave it alone.
>>
>>32194284
Seconded.
>>
>>32190835
Goddamn you namefags. Why must all of you have room temperature IQs?

>>32190837
This person have never fired a 45-70. It's totally manageable, and the amount of powder burnt per cartridge has only a tertiary relationship to free recoil.

>>32192301
30-30 has a tamer kick than 7.62x39.

While free recoil can be measured, perceived recoil is almost entirely mental.
>>
>MFW i realize there are .45-70 loads pushing 350 grains out at 2200 FPS

>MFW no face
>>
>>32190313
The AE Winchesters are great again, mine drives nails without a problem.
>>
Are there any good lever guns for people who aren't fucking cowboy-wannabe manchildren?
>>
>>32194880
>no fun allowed
Get a BLR you faggot
>>
>>32194880
Browning has one that's magazine fed I think. And most guide guns have chrome barrels and black wood/synthetic stocks. So yes.
>>
>>32194544
Usually Marlin's are pre drilled at that age.
Do have a 1951 .35 Rem. Marlin that isn't.
>>
>>32194544
>Is it still worth $350 if its been refinished and reblued?
Yes. The original finish isn't anything particularly fancy like a Colt Royal Blue.
>>
>>32194544
yea its still worth it, i own 2 and they are great, they never fail one is 1952 the other is 1972 and they are both well made, accurate, etc.

unless it is an old marlin for a good price, don't get it. new marlins are shit.
>>
>>32190285
>not getting it in 75-40
>>
>>32195162
wat
>>
>>32195162
>Be stalking in the woods, looking for some forest freeloaders to hunt
>See beautiful buck with a 7 pointer on each side and raise gun
>Shoot, dislocating my right shoulder, the round strikes true, blowing a bowling ball sized hole through and through
>all the meat is destroyed but get gaping hole
>>
LGS has a Mossman 30-30 for $400, has the model 500 style safety, and a grip safety. You can also pull the trigger on safe and it drops the hammer without hitting the firing pin. Spooks me a little.

Local Dicks Sporting goods has the same ol Marlin 336C for $530 or $550, don't remember off hand.

Yet to see a Win 94 in town yet, but would one of the two mentioned above be significantly better for my first Lever 30-30?
> Don't plan on mounting a scope, so the mossburg being a top eject doesn't bother me at all.
>>
>>32190313
>Quality took a drive after 1964

No it didn't. Winchester changed some non functional things to make manufacturing and fitting easier (some pins became screws, some acres became pins) but for the most part the whole pre '64 thing is a meme that old guys get hard for.

>>32190605
>They kick like hell

You sir have a huge gaping vagina. Get the fuck out of here.

>>32191742
Winchester is a fine rifle for the price, the Marlin is a little nicer to put a scope on and they're a little heavier so they're even more mild shooting.
>>
>>32190837
>A .45-70 in modern pressures kicks harder than any centerfire round in common usage
>Implying that's true
>Implying .50 BMG isn't a centerfire round in common usage

>>32195306
>he doesnt like gaping holes
>>
My first gun was a henry 22 and I use it all the time. Do it, they're nice.

Light rifles with steel buttplates hurt me and I don't like them.

/pouts

Marlin is best levergun.
>>
Pretty comfy, video shows disassembly of rifle.

12 ga lever gun?
>>
>>32190313
In actuality the quality is still fine in the post 64 models, but when Remington had newly taken over had a number of quality control issues in the early 2000s. The older ones and the brand new ones are still great rifles.
>>
If I still feel that I should buy the Winchester for $385, I will pick it up. Between Henry, Rossi, and Marlin, who has better build quality?
>>
>>32200795
Marlin 336s are pretty nice, they have a much beefier receiver and a simpler lever mechanism than Winchesters. Plus they're designed from the start for scopes. Old Win94s ejected straight up, so you had to use an offset scope and get the holes custom drilled and tapped. Current ones are modified to eject at an angle instead, but still need a special scope mount.
