Now that they're selling it again, would you get one?

If I was still in California, yeah. Kinda sucks they don't sell just the lower.

Holy shit I wanna get one of those belt fed uppers and combine it with my bump fire stock..

Oh, and those rifles you linked to are sexy

The thing that weirds me out about those guns is the button safety.

I know it's a proven design, I know it should be flawless, but something about a button right THERE just makes me want to not trust it.

I'd own the shit out of that so bad, it'd become ten tenths of the law.

This. $1,200 fucking dollars.

It is almost as if these people are just cash whores taking advantage of a situation on cosmetic bans and under-informed voters.

I bought one and im not even in a ban state :)

$1200 is nothing for a hobby. Not everything has to cater to the lowest denominator price point.

You notice you don't hear any QC or quality complaints either. At the very least they designed, manufactured, and distributed a better rifle than every americheap ak company.

That's pretty much exactly the case. They can be found for about $900 in ban states. It's a pretty low-end AR plus a $300 premium tacked on for the proprietary lower and chopped BCG.

The best setup is to have it side-charge, but most designs attach a reciprocating handle to the bolt itself. This design requires either another proprietary bolt or a design like ASA' side charger (small modification cut on the BCG) or a Gibbz G4 side-charger (special cam pin).

So an Ares SCR lower & BC is about $500 plus $250 for a Gibbz side-charge upper and cam pin. Add an actual bolt and firing pin ($75), barrel assembly ($135 at Brownells), and handguard (say a 10" ALG V1 M-Lok for $105). That's about $1065 plus muzzle device (or thread protector, pinned and welded). Kinda pricey with a cheap barrel and no sights. On the other hand, optimal for using 10rd magazines (reduced magazine well means far better grip on most with a 10rd capacity) and a micro red-dot (on a zero rise mount).

I'm half-tempted to make custom uppers for these--side-charging and with integral micro red-dot mounts.

Compared to alternatives with strict bans, it's a decent setup. I live in VT but I see them occasionally. I'm tempted to pick one up so I can keep it in the car (and not worry about NY levels of retardation). As I said however, there's a big fucking premium slapped on because it's compliant and proprietary. That doesn't make it a huge sack of shit and it also doesn't make Ares/whoever a CTD-esque sack of scumbags. Compared to state compliant Stag's and M&P-15's, it's a small premium (<$100) with far better ergonomics (but possibly reduced reliability--which is also yet to be seen).
>>
>>32185181
They never stopped selling it, it was just that website wasn't fully done.
>>
>>32185181
I would totally own one of these if it weren't for the fact that I know it's a result of California law. It's permanently tainted in that regard which is a shame because it looks good and I like the sleekness of not having a pistol grip, fits into socks and soft shell gun cases/totes a lot better.
>>

>>
>>32187690
The default stock is a standard plastic stock. Much like a mossberg or remshit.
Sure ideally they would have plastic more like FNs or milspec (real milspec) m16s.

Probably why the wood option has been popular. They even offer it as an option. Or did not sure if its available with the name change just yet.
>>
>>32185181
>>
I want one. I'd want one even if I wasn't in California because I much prefer traditional stock to pistol grips aesthetically.

Also, it'd be nice for somebody knock the Mini-14 from its place. Kel-Tec's SU-16 is better for the price but still ass ugly unobtanium.
>>
>>32186887
>>32186897
It's objectively pretty good though, it's the AR15 adapted for a traditional stock, and the AR15 being an excellent rifle, means if you want an excellent rifle with a traditional stock, this is a very good route to go.
>>
>>32186715
Fucking this. In Jew York the LGS has one for $700.
>>
>>32190147
I think the SCR is cool for using uppers other than 5.56.
>put on a .458 or .50 upper for a brush gun
>put on a 6.5 Grendel upper for longer range shooting
>put on a 7.62x39 upper for a better SKS
>put on an AR57 upper to confuse the absolute fuck out of people
>>
>>32185181
So what exactly makes this $200+ more than a Mini-14?
>>
>>32190232
Takes a AR15 mags. Though the SU16 does that also and is cheaper than a Mini 14.
>>
>>32190232
>>32190268
It takes entire AR uppers as well as magazines. Also the pictures of wooden stocks people have are adapted Remington 1100 stocks.
>>
>>32188284
>Get this to work with a short-strike piston upper
>It's basically a FAL with "AR-15" on the side
>>
>>32190201
Won't work with an AR57 upper, which is a shame because a package like that in SBR form would be quite nifty.
>>
>>32190451

It's nowhere near as nice as an SCR or Mini-14

I don't recall if they were always that expensive. I think I picked up my lower receiver for around 300.

I like mine for what it is. I.E. a ranch style rifle that isn't a Mini 14
>>
>>32186715
>The best setup is to have it side-charge, but most designs attach a reciprocating handle to the bolt itself
So what's the problem?
>>
>>32191376
I think he forgot that this side charging upper exists.
>>
>>32186018
reminds me of the auto 5 among others.
>>
>>32191798
I like reciprocating charging-handles though.
>>
>>32191376
The problem is that Ares' bolt is proprietary and not designed with a side-charger in mind. Which leaves a Gibbz or ASA upper which uses the standard point or an interchangeable adapter. Honestly, having a normal CH isn't a horrible thing but it's, in my opinion, the least ergonomic aspect of an AR.

It's nice that they're carrying them again, but fuck no one in California carries them after turners ran out of stock of them earlier this year. Does anyone know of any so cal dealers that stock it?

I just want to know how they work. Doesn't look like the buffer tube can fit in the stock.

It's angled downward via proprietary BCG and funky bolt. Read the thread.

Ares Buffer Assembly.jpg
13KB, 400x218px
>>32194670
It's a proprietary bcg and buffer system. Essentially the BCG is significantly shorter than a regular AR, and the buffer is a sort of rod with a spring that "rides" down into the handle in the stock. That's why it's damn near impossible to change the stock without it being especially modified for it.
>>
>>32194712
Well that's neat.
Leave it to Commies to force the industry to innovate.
>>
>>32194754
Well a recoil buffer angled down into a stock like that isn't strictly a new idea, John Moses Browning did that with the Model 8 rifle and Auto 5 shotgun.

Nobody did it for an AR15 until recent years though.
>>
>>32194712
The good news is that a Remington 1100 stock is like 90% there by default so you can get a wooden stock for the SCR.
>>
>>32194813
Sweet that's good to hear. I'm really digging the wood examples shown so far in this thread. I really want to get one of these as a project gun and see what I can do with it. Shame it appears they don't offer any heavy-barrel variants in a stock config. Probably have to rebarrel it if I want to go that route.

Yeah, for that price they can fucking keep it. I've got a sneaking suspicion that a fudded rifle painted camo isn't exactly the creme de la creme of AR patterns.
>>
>>32195378
Keltec's .223 variant. I will say, I own the SU22 and it's fucking accurate as shit and an amazingly fun little rifle to shoot. I also got it for 300 bucks and it was one of the best 300 dollar investments I've made in my entire life.

Anyone know the approximate width of the lower receiver at the magwell and the area behind it?

I want to try to cover the lower half of the reciever in a wood stock to make it look more "traditional". The interrupted wood look only looks good on slab side rifles IMO.

Info from an actual AR-15 lower would be good enough for an estimate too.
