Bug in, I've got pieces of plywood in 2x4 frames already made for all my windows so I would put them up, I also have a perimeter fence around my backyard and some of my front so I would add barbed wire (that I've already got stored) to the top of the fence (It's got little posts sticking out of the top to wrap around). I'll board up doors to my lower floors and since I'm with my family somebody will always be on watch. I've got a 10/22 a nugget and a 1911 at my house with about 5,000 22lr rounds 500 ish 45.. rounds and about 1,000ish 7.62 and theres 4 people in my family. I've got about 4 months of food and water stored, a garden and there is a swamp about 100 meters from my house I can get water from. If I need to trade I've got 2,000 cheap cigarette lighters, a couple cartons of cigarettes, several boxes of coffee, some gold and some additional bullets (5.56, 9mm etc.) stored

And your only non-solar source of heat is a biomass burner, which is useless if a winter is unexpectedly long, or you are far from burnable resources, ie a city. This also increases risk of robbery/death.

Electric heat generated by wind is ideal, next to an extremely insulated room for emergency. This is also, ironically, the cheapest option with DIY windmills.

Also, all of the hot water whatever is a waste of time if your water source is gone. Unless you're in a dream location, you probably rely on the city pumping you your water. Good luck. Your best bet is to find a relatively clean plot of land and install a groundwater pump, then filter the shit out of it. Probably by hand, considering electricity is now a rarity.

By the way, good luck doing any of this in your typical 3b/2ba suburb home. We'd all die.

Ok guys, Ive learned much about water treatment recently, and a filter is not enough to treat water. I wouldnt recommend iodine either because its not a long term fix that Ive heard about, nor have I seen it used to treat large volumes. Gathering the chemicals needed for treatment is not an easy task, however if there is a way to make your own lime you could increase the efficiency of your filters. If you have a large basin, make is a slow sand filter. Building a large filter like this would require a lot of time and materials.

At the end of the day, silt and sand wont kill you but bacteria will. The nasty bacteria could get stuck in the filters and multiply and pass through once the filter breaks through. If you had a reliable way to test for chlorine, just treat your water with chlorine post filter to a level of no more than 5mg/L.

Ive heard of treatment plants using salt for chlorination since its much safer than using gaseous chlorine to inject into a solution. Though I havent read about that method. Sodium wont contribute to the hardness of the water, but sodium in the water could be used for ion exchange, which is a super efficient way to filter out the minerals and metals in surface waters.

However, you do not want a water with 0 hardness, since its super corrosive. Water that has a nasty taste, almost like booty or bad breath, is due to hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is more present in waters found deeper underground. Considering that in a SHTF scenario, most people will find surface waters for drinking. Rain water collects bacteria and pollutants rapidly and could foul your filters very fast. If only I had the knowledge to built the equipment necessary to carry out purification.

Also as a warning for using a basin: If the pH is 6.5-7.5, in a dark cool environment, and there is natural ammonia in the water, you can get some nasty bacterial growth in your water due to nitrification.

Forgot to mention that the addition of chlorine to raw water could create THM precursors, which are believed to be carcinogenic. Its a good idea to pretreat with chlorine, then use a filter to get the precursors out, then bring the chlorine residual back up post filter. A lot can go wrong because water is a tricky chemical to work with.

As a rule of thumb, cloudy water eats up chlorine. Raise the pH you raise the chlorine residual, yet raising the chlorine residual will lower pH. Its a balancing act, and everything is pH dependent.
