Just ordered on of those $200 maks from sportsmans guide. I head they're pretty rough but my friend ordered two and they're both in decent shape, just looks like a lot of holster wear. If nothing else I'll do a sloppy spot reblue, I just want something cheap to keep in my car

No, you didn't think of that. You only think "well it's cheap now, so it'll be cheap forever" and then complain when Mosins are $500.

It will never fucking be rare you idiot. They were too widely produced to lose any kind of value from refinishing. Jesus christ you are retarded. How does "I may refinish it if it's in too rough of a condition" transfer into cutting up krags and ruining surplus forever? People said the exact same thing about German Mausers in the 1950's. There were in endless supply in old whiskey barrels in hardware stores for $15 each.

Now you can't touch an unmolested (read: not bubba'd, not russian capture, not yugo capture, not Israeli rework) example, even a super common make and year, for less than like $800. Rare variants go for a nice used car.

What he is saying is that the same argument was said about Krags, Enfields, Mausers, Springfields, Mosins etc. Just because millions were made doesn't mean millions are left in original condition.

>>32180385
That's not how rust works. Not having a finish doesn't mean it will rust. Bluing wasn't used on guns until the mid 19th century and even afterwards it was very common to not blue bolts and sometimes receivers. Pic related. American Krags had unblued receivers (though they were case hardened, but that wears off quickly).

If you shoot corrosive ammo, hot water down the barrel followed by regular cleaning. Ballistol is good for making the wood look nice but isn't a requirement. In fact, nothing is for the most part. Just don't let it rot in a garage or attic for 20 years.

ballistol and water for cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo, ballistol on the wood to protect it. some people put a coat of BLO on stocks once a year or so while others think thats absolutely haram. the two rifles you pointed out, the enfield was unissued, the M39 i got in an immediate post-war, unissued stock so they look super minty because of that.

>>32182549
I'm probably only going to go after a service grade which means I'll most likely end up with a repro/modern stock. gonna hunt for one with an original stock tho. I'm only about 90 mins away from camp perry so we'll see what I can find.

rounds for both 38 and 99 are more than a buck each (better reload them yourself)
people don't like the dust covers (but I like the sound)
original dust covers have a unique fit to their rifles so try to get unmolested models
replacement dust covers work but are either slightly loose (making more noise) or too tight (streaking the insides) compared to the original
chrysanthemum look nice
ejection is weak
6.5 Japanese is accurate with light recoil

cop either if original dust cover
>>
>>32183160
Fine, strong rifles, but expect to have to hunt proper cases.
If you're not gonna reload for it, it's a wallhanger

Rounds for the 38 are expensive and hard to find at most lgs and even bigbox stores. It's long but well balanced with almost no felt recoil. They're usually fairly accurate with a unique report.

>>32184220
>What's wrong with Ballistol on the wood?
It attracts dirt and grime and darkens wood. It doesn't "preserve" them like their sales pitch implies.
>>
>>32184220
I don't think it has any capture marks on it, far as I know
>>
>>32184329
If it's bubad it'd have to be from before it was put in the crate and imported. It looks like it was wrapped in some sort of greasy cloth or something that left lines on only that side
>>
>>32184329
I didn't think of it preserving anything, I just figured it added a nice shine without hurting the wood.

I think I forgot to grease the barrel of my K31 before putting it back into storage after cleaning. It's been a few months now and it's been sitting in a decently well-ventilated closet in the Bay Area. Not in a case.

Am I going to come back to rust in the barrel?

Did you run a wet patch through after cleaning or leave the barrel dry?
>>
>>32187915
probably not
if you do, it won't be anything that can't be repaired with a brass brush and elbow grease
>>
>>32188295
I ran some MC25 to clean out the old grease and then tight dry patches.

I just ordered Kroil. In a week when I'm back hopefully I worried over nothing.
>>
>>32187915
This is something I am also curious about. What is the best way to prevent any type of damage at all to military surplus weapons when you store them for periods of a couple months? Right now I just oil every part I can think of and stack them in my closet. Would it be a considerable improvement to get a gun safe and throw some demoisturizers in there? Are my guns gonna rot in any way by what I'm doing now?
>>
>>32188415
My standard procedure before going off to school is to wipe down all metal parts with a rag seasoned with grease. Then layer on grease inside the working mechanism where it's not going to be touched on accident. A thickly greased cotton patch as well down the barrel, maybe a few strokes with a brush to make sure it's really distributed evenly. When you get back you can easily wipe off the grease with the help of just about any solvent.

As far as wood goes I'm not sure there's a ton you can do other than cleaning with orange-glo every so often and maybe rubbing oil if that was the original finish.
>>
>>32187915
Unless it's somewhere really, really, really humid there won't be any rust.
>>32188454
>As far as wood goes I'm not sure there's a ton you can do other than cleaning with orange-glo every so often and maybe rubbing oil if that was the original finish.

I mean, I do it every so often so the wood doesn't leave a mess on my hands after handling it. It may impact oil finishes but orange oil doesn't really react with the wood. It hasn't visibly changed the finish in any way other than cleaning some of the surface dirt. As far as I can tell it slowly evaporates out anyways.

I really don't see the harm when it's something you might do once every 5 years if that. How else would you clean the wood without harming the finish? The goal is to just have a rifle that you can hold without needing to wash your hands afterwards.

In my experience the K31 with shellac finish did not change color or look visibly different after I used orange-glo to clean off the dirt. The finish is fading in spots as well and those areas did not darken.
>>
>>
>>32188605
You're under the mistaken impression that stocks need cleaning. They do not.

>In my experience the K31 with shellac finish did not change color or look visibly different after I used orange-glo to clean off the dirt. The finish is fading in spots as well and those areas did not darken.
And again, people mistake short term looks for long term preservation. People say the exact same thing about spraying oven cleaner on stocks. Oven cleaner is lye. After about 10 years stocks will turn green as it breaks down the wood fibers.

Orange oil is non-drying. It just evaporates over time after application. I don't really see any evidence that suggests that it will break down anything in wood. Lye is a strong base and obviously will cause chemical reactions.

I'm not really going to change my mind on the issue of cleaning. I don't enjoy leaving black greasy streaks all over everything I touch just because I touched the stock. If you have any advice on a wood cleaner that is less likely to be an issue I'm all ears.

You shouldn't get black grease on your hands from touching a stock. If it's doing that then it's probably the orange glo that you put on the stock or it's stock oil that you put on it. Either way, you shouldn't use either.

I have 20+ guns and not a single one leaves oil on my hands from touching the stock.

I panic bought a Yugo from Classic last month for $420, and it's been shooting fantastically. Only main difference between the Yugos and the Russians is that the Russians have a chrome-lined barrel whereas the Yugos do not, so you gotta be sure to clean it well if you use corrosive ammo

The black grease is Automatenfett and wasn't supposed to be used for rifle stocks.

The waffenfett is going to be pretty gross once it's accumulated half a century of storage bullshit.

Automatenfett has moly in it that impacts the texture so you shouldn't be using it for obvious reasons. It was never used to treat the stock.

The point was not that I do this but that cleaning this off isn't easy and orange glo did it.

You should do your own research. Some quick google suggests that the original finish was BLO. You can get some and rub it into the stock if this is the case. This will keep the wood from drying out. However I don't believe it will resolve the roughness.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if there's nothing in the wood at all, it's susceptible to dry rot and fairly weak. If the original finish was an oil finish I don't see the harm in rubbing in more of the same oil.

What preserves wood is not the finish, it's the environment that it's kept in. Pic related. Pretty much zero stuck finish remaining from heavy use, but it won't get any sort of dry rot or damage because I keep in inside with air conditioning.
>If the original finish was an oil finish I don't see the harm in rubbing in more of the same oil.
Other than ruining the original finish.
>>
>>32191032
It's a rifle, not a museum piece. I would argue it would be worse if the stock is ruined because it wasn't kept indoors below 50% humidity at all times.

I really don't understand this fetishism of originalism sometimes when it comes to milsurp. Yes, it's history. No, you don't have to let it sit with literally zero remaining finish exposed to the elements.

Now, the story started with an old man renting our trailer home out in the country. I was the only person he knew who did anything related to guns (I took apart guns, cleaned them, and found history on them as a hobby) and said that his father gave him a rifle from his time in WWII. Our renter went on saying how he thinks it's German because of all the weird words and symbols from it (this guy isn't exactly the sharpest KABAR in the KEBAB if you know what I mean); he wanted me to take it, clean it, find ammunition, fire it, and find information in regards to what it was.
When he took it out, I was greeted by what was obviously NOT a German mauser, but a much longer Japanese rifle. This absolutely shocked me since I've never worked with or ever imagined working with a Japanese rifle. The poor thing was completely frozen- the bolt wouldn't budge or anything. I happily took it off his hands and went to work on it at home; I got my oil, screw driver, and newspapers, and took the gun apart as gently as I could with what I had. As soon as I split the stock from the metal- LIVE cockroaches fell out all over the floor, along with God knows what else. Tons of water, oil, and cleaning bare parts ensued. Second part coming up.

With the cleaning underway, I went to finding information. It was obvious this gun had gone through a lot: carved buttstock, chipped wood, missing cleaning rod, caked debris. I was in highschool at the time and I told my two friends about it. "Hey, lets use the translator to see what the carvings say,"- so we did that. I put it to be set on Japanese, and nothing came up, it just didn't match anything. I decided to try Chinese just to see, and it read it perfectly like that. What we got was "Big East"; we had no clue what that meant, so I told them I would look it up at home. Couldn't find anything myself, when my buddy found something relating to the second sino-japanese war. Apparently " The Great Eastern Conflict" was what the Chinese called the Second sino-Japanese war, which was going on before WWII.
With this extra bit of information I was able to piece together a hypothesis/ currently accepted conclusion as to what had happened. This rifle was one of the early models, sporting the extra bit of metal on the safety for your thumb to press against. This rifle was also obviously captured by an american soldier who brought it here to leave it in a shed for God knows how long without even cleaning it. Then there was the fact that the rifle has Chinese writing carved into the buttstock referring to the second sino-japanese war. In order, the rifle would have been made early on, to fight in the war around the 1910's-20's or so, where it would have been captured by a Chinese soldier who brought it back to be used. When WWII rolled around, the rifle would have been captured by a Japanese soldier during the invasion of China, and turned back into circulation to be used in the Pacific theater against the Americans. Some time during this, the rifle was captured by an American soldier, and brought home with him to be left in a shed, eventually being passed down to his son. Finally, it ended up in my hands to be cleaned.

The guy who lent it to me for cleaning decided to not pay rent, and completely trashed the house in the process before disappearing altogether- so now it's mine. In all honesty it's in better hands now, but I wish I could do more for it. I only have rudimentary tools like 3-in-1 oil, regular flathead screwdrivers, and the will to do good for it, but I feel it's not enough. The rifle is currently resting, leaning against my bureau next to my bed, and I worry how it occasionally slides into the crack behind it, denting the wall. I just don't know what else to do safely.

Why do SKS rifles have to be so damn hard to get back together?

Magazine never wants to lock into place the first couple times. Almost takes a vice to squeeze the trigger assembly into the receiver.

Simonov should be sent to the gulag for this design.

It's a Type 38 that was removed from IJA service and given to a school. That's what the æ–‡ under where the "mum" was means. As does the two zeros placed in front of the serial number.

The stamps in the wood probably say what school that owned it.

We all get deals sometimes. If someone buys a $100 Mosin now it's because the seller is an idiot and hasn't looked at the prices lately and just assumes they're still $100 because of the idiots that spouted that they will always be $100 (even as the prices kept going up and up).

Nagant only had minor additions to the Moisin rifle, nothign that actually would have significantly changed it or have not been independently added.
James Lee was Scottish-Canadian.
Garand might have been born in Canada but spent most of his life in the US and identified as an American.

My other rifle doesn't have a blued buttplate, I suspect the finish came off pretty quickly for the same reason that the butt is often beaver-chewed.
>>
>>32201030
I think it's more likely that it was reblued. Either as a rebuild or not.
>>
>>32201779
The other side of the buttplate for both rifles is blued.

This is an arsenal refurb. You can tell because the stock has been sanded and refinished. It had about 30-40 year old yellow grease on it when I cleaned the rifle up and applied new grease for storage. I'm fairly certain that from the arsenal they were supposed to be blued but the buttplate bluing rapidly wore off with use. Just storage from before I got it shows that the buttplate is losing the finish again.
