/k/, what's the legality of a fully automated (not fully automatic) sentry gun? The software and hardware exist to detect motion, direct a gun towards that motion, and fire it. Here's the project site:

http://projectsentrygun.rudolphlabs.com/

What's the legality of this with a firearm? It's possible to remote-fire a rifle, but they work mechanically, not electrically, so some sort of device would need to be made to convert a servo's motion to a trigger pull, right?

I assume that the ATF's rule of one bullet per trigger action still applies, so would it need to be manually fired? Would it be legal to fire it remotely, say using a computer behind cover with the gun in the open?

For clarification, I do not plan to create this regardless of legal possibility nor do I think it would be a good idea to. A gun that fires at all motion without the ability to identify friendlies is a shitty idea, and might kill the creator. I just want to know if it would be legal, or what modifications would need to be made/loopholes would need to be found to make it legal.

Its illegal to set traps and this would be considered one
>>
Illegal to trigger a firearm electronically
>>
>>32176705
Very illegal
>>
Militarily, this would be very effective, but would not be able to follow any rules of engagement.

If you had a kill zone where rules of engagement did not apply, or needed perimeter defense around a FOB, this could be very useful.
>>
>Camera doesn't recognize your face at 100 yards

lol woops

You've got to be the one making the decision to apply lethal force. If you set up some device that does that without any input from you, then it's an indiscriminate killer and a booby trap. I mean, if you write a sufficiently advanced software, maybe your booby-trap trial will be the one to legalize automated sentry turrets. Take one for the team.

wat is this?
>>
>>32176705
There's basically no situation where shooting someone with a remote-controlled gun would be a lawful use of force.

You can't just shoot someone for trespassing on your property. You have to be in reasonable fear of imminent harm before you can use deadly force, and any prosecutor in the country would say that if you were safe enough to remotely operate a gun turret, you were not in imminent danger.

What if you equipped it with a non-lethal implement like a water cannon or paintball minigun? Slap on an alarm system and it will hose down (non-lethally) any unwanted intruders and sound a burglar alarm of which you can tell the cop your home made security system just splattered a bunch of groids with bright yellow paint without killing them
>>
>>32177050

You can use electricity. You can order Anzio's 20mm rifle with electric ignition.
Hallway Guy's homemade 20mm is a legal DD and is electrical primed.
>>
>>32176705

I'm thinking of a loophole that involves a dismembered hand being puppeted using electric charges a-la frog legs.
>>
>>32181594
Why not program it to shoot a few feet in front or behind targets, so if there is a trespasser they get scared as fuck and bolt?
>>
A sentry gun is an area denial weapon. It's meant to deter people from entering a given area. In effect, a minefield, but easier to remove when you don't need it there anymore.

I'd assume you'd be able to use one whenever you'd otherwise be permitted to plant a bunch of live land mines.

Probably doesn't happen very often for most folk.

I THINK ANON IS REFERRING TO AN ELECTRICALLY AUTOMATED TRIGGER MECHANISM, WHICH IS ILLEGAL, RATHER THAN ELECTRICAL IGNITION
>>
>>32176705
This is illegal on so many levels. I can't even count the many ways in which you would be fucked by the long, long dick of the law.
>>
How does it determine friend/enemy?

He means it can't be activated remotely. That's illegal.

Try that in court after you kill Jamal he's a gud boy dindu muffin
>>

Friends don't let friends show up when the sentry is active.
>>
>>32177050
this is myth. There are several legal guns with electronic triggers, and there is no precedent saying you can't remotely activate a firearm.
>>
>>32176705
I've seen more than one person on tv shows put together paintball/airsoft automated sentries.

Nope, Hallway Guy uses an N64 controller to electrically fire his 20mm cannon as registered through the ATF.

What if I armed traps and scattered them around my property?
>>
>>32183727
'Warning shots' are illegal uses of lethal force in most jurisdictions.

>>32181594
This. Good luck convincing a jury that you had a reasonable fear of imminent death or serious injury while sitting at your computer shooting a guy with the remote control turret on the other side of your property.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantrap_(snare)

"Mantraps that use deadly force are illegal in the United States, and in notable tort law cases the trespasser has successfully sued the property owner for damages caused by the mantrap."

** COUGH COUGH D O E UNDERGROUND INSTALLATIONS COUGH COUGH **

This is the correct answer.

Damn, there goes my idea of arming a bunch of feminine boys with AR's wearing maid outfits.

The Department of Education has underground installations? I FUCKING KNEW IT!
>>
>>32181594

It can be if you use a remote weapon to incapacitate a target that is harming an innocent bystander and all other AOJs for lethal force are met. I'd hate to be the test case though.

Guys, I have an improvement idea.

>Camera linked to smart phone, tablet, computer, whatever.
>Sentry detects motion and notification is sent.
>Verified hog on screen in sights.
>Remote trigger to fire individual rounds with individual trigger press.

>profit.
