Hey there /k/,

Finally saved enough money to get a good handgun for Christmas. What do y'all recommend? I've been told the Glock 19 is a good go-to, but I want to get the /k/ opinion before making this big purchase.

Also general handgun thread
>>
>>32176365
My vote is the gen 3 Glock 19.
You can't go wrong and is the absolute best for its price.
>>
>>32176375
Why gen 3?
>>
>>32176365
GTG, but better options exist for the same price
>>
>>32176378
iirc it had failure to feed and ejection problems.
I'm not sure if it ever got fixed. someone would need to weigh in on that.
Gen 3 is also proven, has a bigger market for parts, and the overall design between generations didn't change enough to add another $50-60 imo
>>
>>32176383
Like what? I'm new to handguns, I'm more familiar with rifles and shotguns

>>32176406
Gotcha, thanks
>>
>>32176383
>>32176417
I'm curious too. I haven't seen an objectively better pistol without spending at least $100 more.
>>
>>32176383
>GTG, but better options exist for the same price
This is literally flat out a lie.

>>32176365
9mm Glock is best. And ponies.
>>
>>32176365
If you plan on carrying it at all, just buy a single stack 9mm like a shield, glock 43, or lc9, and be done with it. they're comfortable enough to shoot, carry enough rounds which you can easily carry a second mag(they're tiny), and you'll actually carry it.

don't even bother with double stack. you probably won't carry it. People saying they carry something like a glock 19 are fucking idiots. TWO SHOTS is the average in any situation where someone had to use their CCW. 5-10rds+extra magazine is quite enough.

have a 9mm single stack for a CCW, then have full sized shotguns/rifles for HD/SHTF. people saying they have a pistol for SHTF is so fucking retarded I almost can't believe it.
>>
>>32176513
I'm more interested in using it for the range and carrying it with me when i go hiking and stuff
>>
>>32176530
>hiking and stuff
oh, you're starting at .357 magnum revolvers and 10mm semi-autos then. anything below, I wouldn't trust against a grizzly bear. even .44 magnum revolvers, maybe.
>>
>>32176513
May as well carry a Derringer with that attitude.
>>
>>32176417
>>32176432
>>32176439

Polymer Striker guns:

XD/XDm
SW M&P
FNS 9
CZ P10
PPQ

All of these guns are competitive with the Glock 19 and in the same 500-550 price range.

Pick the one that fells best in your hand or makes your dick the hardest.
>>
>>32176550
Not so much for grizzly bears, I've just had friends who have carried when they've gone hiking and ran into people who were trying to rob them on the trail
>>
>>32176569
Yeah I'm going to try them all out but the erection will definitely be the determining factor
>>
>>32176559
no because they suck to shoot.

>>32176570
well, if you don't give a fuck about animals attacking you, then just do what I said unless you also don't give a fuck about weight, then just buy whatever you want. go to your gun store and finger fuck a glock 19, beretta 92fs, cz 75b, too many to list really.
>>
>>32176569

it that's the situation get a G19 and have a 19 and 32rd spare mag handy.
>>

>>32176606
>XD/XDm
Also haven't heard good things about this gun.
>SW M&P
Don't really think negatively of this gun. Just think what is good about this gun, Glock does at least slightly better.
>FNS 9
There are a couple of situations where the slide will lock up cannot be racked. When this happens, the slide can only be released by pulling the trigger. This can be disasterous in a defensive situation (especially during a malfunction if you can’t clear a bad round) and dangerous even for more casual shooting if an inexperienced person is unfamiliar with the problem.
>CZ P10
CZ makes good guns. No experience with the P10, but I'm sure it lacks the aftermarket.
>PPQ
Ergonomics felt weird but haven't heard of any issues. Doesn't have the aftermarket though.
>>
>>32176606
Glock fanboys out in full force today I see.

OP just get a nice DA/SA and practice quick draw while also unlocking the safety. They're much nicer guns than any polymer striker on the market right now.
>>
>>32176365
Don't buy a Glock before shooting one. Their triggers are a love or hate affair. Personally I can't stand them, which is unfortunate because I like how Glocks shoot and feel in the hand.
>>

M&P has ergonomics better than a Glock, it's also the only Polymer Striker gun that doesn't look like it's attempting to disguise itself as a brick.

Apart from general sloppiness in manufacturing and spotty quality control, the XD has a number of design faults. The first deal-breaker is that the grip safety not only locks the trigger and prevents it from moving, but also locks the slide and prevents it from moving. This means that the shooter needs to maintain a perfect firing grip in order to clear malfunctions or perform remedial actions. An additional risk is that if the grip safety breaks or gets debris under it (both of which have been frequently documented), the gun is out of commission until it can be fixed.

>>32176670
>better ergo
My Glock 19 is perfect fitting with a hogue sleeve that cost me $10.
>inb4 hurrr durrr you had to modify
It was a $10 fix and my brother prefers it without the sleeve.

> only Polymer Striker gun that doesn't look like it's attempting to disguise itself as a brick

It's square. It's a tool, not another creepy ceramic doll for your wiccan feminist cult.

>>32176675
I might. I don't like the idea of relying on batteries for my sidearm though. I was thinking about getting tritium sights.
>>
>>32176639
>Aftermarket

If you're going to spend 1000+ dollars on a Glock and it's miscellaneous shit, simply buy a better gun.

There is literally no reason to spend that much on a Glock unless you're doing legitimate precision shooting and need the amenities.

That being said, get a;

Mk.23, if you want to burn money
An older Sig
A Beretta
An all metal CZ if you can't wait for the P10
Any of FN's polymer handguns
Any of Walther's handguns
Literally anything as expensive as a Glock + Garbage
>>
>>32176735
>I don't like the idea of relying on batteries for my sidearm though. I was thinking about getting tritium sights.

I'm not saying you should get an RMR, I'm saying whatever the percentage of handguns with RMRs is today, it's gonna be twice that 3 years from now. also, depending on the optic and gun, you can get irons sights that work with the optic.
>>
>>32176639
>no one mentions the H&K VP9
What a shame. All that gun needs is an optics-ready mount and it'd be fucking perfect.

When they were introduced the Gen4s had some teething issues, just like every other gun. Go for the Gen4. There is literally no reason to cling to the Gen3s unless you live in Commiefornia, where Gen4s are not "government-approved."

That's a huge fucking leap there, buddy. I never said I was going to spend thousands on my Glock, and your argument sucks ass.

>There is literally no reason to spend that much on a Glock unless you're doing legitimate precision shooting and need the amenities.

Glock aftermarket doesn't just have to be about making the ultimate percussion machine. What if you just want to make it look your own? The Glock aftermarket makes it extremely easy to modify a Glock to fit whatever you want it to do. You're advocating for a cookie cutter solution to strawman problem.

Also, you're a condescending douche and people don't like you.
>>
>>32176550
Not everyone lives in grizz country. A .44 is the upper limit of what you need for black bears, and in most states you're never going to see a black bear either, so the upper limit for a reasonable carry piece would be 10mm. There is no need to lug a heavy-recoiling boat anchor around unless you really are living in bear country.
>>
>>32176791
Or they could just buy a better gun.
>>
>>32176800
to tell you the truth, while I love me some G20, I would not feel defenseless with a G17 in (brown) bear country. Some quality +p TMJ or handmade wadcutter HCL and I'm set. That's 18 rds I can dump into the animal in 8 seconds.

Others have said it, but a Gen 3 or 4 Glock in 9mm is probably the best. I like the 17 as I have bigger hands, and despite what others may say, you can CC a full size gun if you have the right system for it. Gen 4 reliability is fine now. I've got around 20,000 ish rounds through my Gen 4 G17 that I bought in 2013, and have had no issues with it. As a range and outdoor gun the 17 would be my pick. For defending yourself from animals, 9mm is fine, especially when in a magazine with 32 of its buddies.

If you can get the Glock at a reasonable price it's fine, but it has a bizarre grip angle. If you're about to drop $550 on a new handgun there are better options. And if you want moderately reasonable responses, never include the word Glock in the question. The fanbase is the equivalent of Undertale with guns.

Basically everyone is making their own version of a Glock now but the only company that gets progressively worse at it is Glock.

The Slovakian Grand Power s.r.o. company is by now well know within the international sport shooters community. Ever since its first mass-produced polymer-frame semiautomatic pistol (the K100) was launched in the early 2000s, the Grand Power company conquered the "hearts and minds" of a huge number of civilian shooters and professional operators worldwide with its high-quality handguns offered at a very competitive price.
All the Grand Power semiautomatic pistols are based upon a rotating barrel system, which drastically reduces recoil and muzzle climb levels so that even less experienced shooters may be able to handle hot loads or high calibers.
>>
heart employs a much less common trigger configuration called “Double Action+.” Interestingly, a shooter can run a triple action pistol like a double/single action one and never realize the difference. This is because the shooter needs to take an additional step to activate the new capability. Once the hammer is cocked on the Lionheart LH9, a shooter can push the hammer forward rendering the next trigger pull slightly heavier than a single action one but markedly lighter than the standard double action pull.
>>
he Rex Zero 1S is one of the highest quality pistols and best values in today’s handgun market. The Rex is an all metal, hammer fired pistol that has passed extensive Slovenian military/NATO based tests, and has a lifetime warranty. The Rex allows the user to operate the gun in their choice of modes; either DA/SA or SAO. AREX is an ISO90001 certified company. Their expertise shows in the exceptional fit and finish of this gun. The frame is T7075-T6 aluminum with full-length slide rails, dust cover picatinny rail, ambi-safeties, and ambi-magazine releases. The slide is cut from solid bar stock, coated to protect against wear and corrosion, and has forward cocking serrations. The steel sights can be replaced with any after-market dovetail sights. AREX makes their own magazines, and they are of superb quality. They contain a unique progressive rate spring, are easy to disassemble for cleaning, are coated inside and out for corrosion resistance, and the spring is attached to the follower (can be removed).

It features a polymer frame with a stainless steel slide so it is completely corrosion resistent making it perfect for concealed carry. Ultra smooth slide release. Traditional double action with a very smooth double action trigger pull and a crisp release when the hammer is cocked. It also has a half cock feature that allows for a shortend double action trigger and a great option between hammer down and hammer back carry. Safety acts as a cock and lock in single action but also prevents trigger pull in hammer down and half cock positions. Mid range compact size is excellent for concealed or open carry. Pistol features a 3.8" barrel and comes with a 13 Round mag. Design is based on a CZ-75 and all CZ-75 based mags will fit although the 17 round full frame mags will extend outside the frame. 3 dot sights. Textured grips.
I need another 9mm pistol like I need a non house trained baby sloth, but I think I will get one of these. It is simply a lot of gun for the money.
Comes complete with a hard shell factory case, cable lock, cleaning rod, and owners manual. Carries a 1 year warranty from the importer.

If you plan on CCing it, keep in mind that the main reason the Glock 19 is so commonly recommended is because it is the smallest fully featured handgun that your average person can reasonably conceal. It's a good choice, but it's not the end-all be-all that some people make it out to be, particularly if you work at a job where you have to tuck your shirt in or need deep concealment.

You should also consider that the next generation of Glocks is probably going to be rolled out next year. If you decide to go with a Glock, you can possibly get a better one or one of the current gens for cheaper if you're willing to wait.
