They had *one* kind of plastic back then; Bakelite. They used a lot of it, actually, I'm surprised - it was used all over the USS North Carolina, for instance, and you can still see it.

Bakelite isn't super strong or durable, but it was perfect for that kind of job, such as cheap grips for mass-produced pistols.

thanks. thats the kind of shit im talking about, if you were trying to buy a real ww2 1911 you have to figure out the date and if the grips are period correct and all that shit. its a lot of info to know, i dont know if ill ever go down that rabbit hole but i would like a ww2 representative example at some point. im hoping the CMP 1911s still come through

Glad this thread is still alive... I really don't want to give it back. I don't own a 1911 yet, but will definitely be picking one up soon. Maybe an ATI or a Rock Island. Something GI spec.
