Yes. At least in theory. The m9 was made off the ideas of the P38 because allied gun designers couldn't figure out how to get 124gr 9mm to fly out a barrel at 1250+fps without it exploding or weighing 4lbs.

There's some heritage the Beretta 92 shares with the Walther P38 but the two are very distinct pistols.
