In general the younger you are the btter but it doesnt matter as much as youd think.

should i rather serve in the French military or US one ?
>>
>>32166477
Are you me? I'm in the exact same case.
I'm leaning towards the former option, if only because acquiring permanent residency in the US is pretty much impossible unless you marry a US citizen or get lucky with the green card lottery.
So I'll probably be enlisting in the French army.
>>
>>32165389
How hard is basic training? I can do about 45 push-ups, plan to get to 80. Can run 2 miles in 14 or so minutes. Plan to get to 13m. I think I'm fine for the physical stuff, but I'm really worried about the mental aspect. Do a lot of people drop out?
>>
>>32166583

Wish you good luck on gatting US citizenship

i may be wrong, but i feel like french army can be more comfy, better food, and i could be handling dem famas, and if 'im gonna leave france, i might as well give it a favor.

Can you resume studies after the military ?
one of the reason i want to nelist is because i can't bear school anymore.

i just want to give up on the give up on the studies for some time, learn discipline, get /fit/ and just be in the military

Well if my family didnt hated the military i would probably be already in it by now, but i've only been discovering recently how wrong they are.
>>
>>32166591
Only if you can't into social functions or handle authority or tumble dry setting.

If that's your physical baseline now, and can basic hygiene, you'll excel really.
>>
>>32166609
>gatting US citizenship
I've more or less given up on that, it's too hard.
I don't know if the French military would be more comfy (what makes you say that?) and they're going to replace the FAMAS with another rifle if I'm not mistaken

You can probably resume your studies afterwards, yeah, but why would you do that?

We're in the same boat, I'm studying something I hate as well and my family isn't very enthusiastic about the military. I've realized that I wasn't cut out for academic stuff so I've decided to enlist. Depending on the MOS you're aiming for, you might be able to convince them that you're making the right choice
>>
>>32166630
Thanks for the response, puts my mind at ease.
>>
>>32166642
French military got the better food, and generally the french military guy i asked if they liked it, all of them replied yes, so i guess its good

why would i do what ?

I think i'm just not gonna tell them, i'm just gonna do it secretly from them, içf they knew, they would be trying everything to stop me from doing so
>>
>>32166630
>>
>>32166680
What do you want to do in the military? What branch are you joining, and to do what?

>why would I do what
Resuming your studies after your service

I don't know if it's a good idea to do it secretly, but it's your choice
If you're over 18, you can do what you want anyway, so it might be better to discuss it with them since they can't stop you
>>
>>32166706
I'm pretty frugal, so as long as i don't mop the floor, i am ok with whatever they'll give me, and i don't even have a baccalauréat anyway, so its not like i'll have a super advanced thing.

Well, i need to study to get a job

Eurofag who just migrated to the US here, got my permanent residency approved last week. Pretty hype, gonna enlist next month.

But yeah, unless you're a millionaire or marry an american you're kinda fucked as a european wanting to move to the US.

Your other chance is to get a work or study permit and apply under the MAVNI program (french is a language they would approve), but then you have to be a lawful resident for at least 2 years before you can apply iirc.
>>
>>32167994
How did you get your green card?
>>
>>32168103
Married an american woman, came here on a K1 visa. Took a little over 3 months to get adjusted to permanent resident after i got married and filed the papers. So not too bad really.

Filing the Visa application and waiting to get to the US embassy took a long ass time though. Like a year.
>>

Downside is that being a non-citizen I can't get any jobs that require security clearance. But if I want to do combat role that won't matter anyways, just means I can't get any cool tech jobs.

Help me, I just got done at MEPS and I am held over. I couldn't piss for the drug test. I sat there and tried for like an hour but I just couldn't piss with a guy watching me. Any tips on getting over it? My current plan is to just chug until I can't hold it once I am in there.
>>
>>32168389
Is being SOF even possible for the average joe? What would I have to do to become a likely candidate for best boys?
>>
>>32168869
Chug, but you're going to have to get used to peeing for America eventually.
>>
I meet the mins to pass selection for sf and exceed them in most areas, but I'm taking a month to get in even better shape.

Question: if you're already fit enough to get through, then are the two months of basic, two months of infantry training, and airborne training likely to blunt your edge before you get to the pre-selection training? Because I doubt by that they push grunts as hard as we need to push to get into the q course.
>>
>>32169002
0321 here, if there's major cardio or pool gut checks you'll definitely feel it after getting soft for a few months. I know the Navy puts there SOF guys in separate platoons with more PT, and most selection courses have a prep course, a la BRPC > BRC. I think AF might have the worst of it.

All in all only my cardio took a hit, find some guys and do all the body weight stuff you can when you have free time.
>>
>>32169002
Nearly positive infantry AIT is only like 4 weeks.
Also, if you have hold over youll get worked out. There was an 18x drop a few threads ago saying how they dont have classes over the summer. So they were on hold that whole time basically just getting the shit beat out of them on a daily basis.
>>
>>32169307
They have retraining over the summer, a couple of our guard guys went for a few weeks to pick up 11C.

For fresh guys it's OSUT, boot and AIT all rolled into one. You graduate basic, then the next morning it's infantry school with all the same fucksticks you've been with.
>>
>>32168918
You don't have to be a superhuman to get into SOF, you know.
>>
>>32168918
Yes. The only thing keeping more "average joes" from doing it is the thought that they could never make it no matter how hard they tried. It's a lot of hard work and determination, but it's way more doable than people give it credit for. Not easy, but it's a far cry from impossible

Just max the PFT and then some before you even think of signing a contract, score above mongoloid on the ASVAB and sign a contract that guarantees you a slot in the appropriate schools(option 40, 18x, etc. idk what it is for other branches)

From there on out, it's
1-don't quit EVER. Seriously, no matter what. Make them escort you off the course if you have to, but as long as you never say "I quit" your odds of passing increase almost to 100%
2-don't get lazy. If you become a lazy shitbag before, during, or after selection you will either not make or be kicked out of your high-speed unit

That's it
>>
>>32168918
>>32169395
I'm gonna go ahead and say 'no' then

Only an nth of anybody even attempts it, and less than an 1/8th even has the fortitude to make it. If you compare that to our population, they sure as hell aren't average.
>>
>>32169395
>1-don't quit EVER.
I don't know about the US, but in my country you have to get above average results during training in order to make it into SOF, it doesn't only rely on whether or not you choose to quit. Is that not the case for Americans?
>>
>>32169445
Most branches will take any one out of basic training into a selection course, but at the start of each course is generally a physical fitness test that is pass/fail. If you pass that then it's a ton of smoke and mirrors and brutal physical activity, it's not even training really.

If you get selected then you go do the cool guy training, then get to a unit and get smoked and hazed.

I'm going for a rate that requires TS, but I had taken adhd meds from elementary until the end of high school. thing is, the doc who diagnosed me ran her own private practice and retired without leaving a trace 5 years ago, and the only records I could scrounge up were for other shit that merely references that some other doc thinks i have adhd. I got through college with a 3.7 without meds so I should be fine.

Should I just lie and hope OPM/the navy doesn't find out, or is it not worth the gamble? even if I do find the records, will they give me a waiver? DOD says I can't have had more than a single daily dosage but I had one dose of ritalin in the morning and one at lunch during high school: http://www.dtic.mil/whs/directives/corres/pdf/613003p.pdf

what are the chances of getting caught if i lie?
>>
>>32169806
As long as anyone they interview doesn't mention it then you'll be okay. A high school teacher maybe?

If they find out it depends on how far along you are in training and situational type stuff. I saw a guy halfway through EOD get fucking dropped on the spot, reclassed to some maintenance mos.
>>
>>32169495
Well, it seems to be different here then
>First step is a profile selection: Candidates will be selected regarding unit requirements and personal file (e.g. if the regiment needs some mountain specialists, they will ask for more mountain troopers to come for the selection). Candidates selected must attend the two weeks basic airborne training prior the SF training, for those who are not already enlisted in an airborne regiment.
>Second step of selection is "adaptation training" and "stage commando" lasting twelve weeks. Candidates must be above average to continue the training. Most cases of failure and RTU occur during this phase.

frenchfag by the way, this is an extract from the wikipedia page of the 1st Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment which is part of our SOCOM
>>
>>32169871
Yeah, our recruiting is near constant to keep teams filled, so we take people with no experience as long as they can hack it. The bulk of SF though comes from current active duty soldiers, they still have to go to the same selection as those that come straight from basic.

When I was saying "don't quit" I was talking about after you actually make selection. Willpower and determination is 90% of what selection is about. Teamwork, physical and mental ability, and everything else all take up the remaining 10% of what the cadre is looking for

Youre much better off choosing a rate youll actually enjoy. Either way youre a veteran which looks great and you get the Gi Bill to get a degree in criminal justice if you want for free. They don't. They mean they're checking trucks in at a loading dock, or patrolling a parking lot at night. That's what "private security" means. If they're really lucky, they're somewhere that requires them to be armed (critical infrastructure, power plants, etc), since that at least pays a decent living.

So for your actual question:

>Will enlisting as an infantryman get someone to pay me $150k a year to go innadesert and shoot cool guns?

No, absolutely not. Conventional infantrymen have nothing that makes them worth hiring, especially if you're joining now and probably won't even deploy. Half-retarded IT guys will get six-figure overseas contracting jobs before you will, because they at least have a necessary skill.
>>
>>32171671

>>

Just go active. Going from reserve to active is near impossible now adays. Youll regret now going active. Do 4 and get out with the gi bill and become whatever you want to be.

>>
>>32171714

Depends on what you did during your deployment, but generally no. Deployments are rare as fuck now, deployments where you're actually doing anything are even rarer.

Like I said, it's not hard to get a job as an overseas contractor making good money. It's just hard to get those jobs if literally your only skill is "i cn shoot gud and wer a heevy backpak".

That's really the only problem with your plan. The (Air/Army) National Guard doesn't really do their military job. If you're in it for the college money and stuff, cool, go for it. If you think you're actually going to do anything related to your chosen military job, you're going to be disappointed.

Every time I post on /int/ I have a tie with a foreigner. Do I have to report that? No. Don't be autistic. Save the reporting for family, close friends, and business contacts, not random chink in food stall or gypsy who ripped you off in italy.

Also, this only really matters for a security clearance, so it depends on your rate.

I hate to ask to be spoon fed, but why shouldn't I go into the us air force?

I'm a 22 y/o male with no college education and not much more than a job that keeps the lights on. My motivation is that I want more than I'm getting out of life and fast, without going into debt as I currently have none and don't want a cent of it.

Before someone inevitably calls me a faggot, I'm saying right now that I'm ignorant as fuck about the ins and outs of military service, it just seems like the most direct route to a better life.
>>
>>32176599
What do you want to do in the armed forces? You need to find a service that you could imagine doing for a few years.
>>
What makes infantry so different from other mos?
>>
>>32176624
I'm curious about munitions systems, but I can see how that would have little civilian application, so essentially anything that has me building something or fixing something.

Overall though, I'm not entirely sure what I would like to do, I almost assumed someone would have given me a reason it's a shit idea.

As far as what I want from service in general, I want an opportunity to set a direction in my life and to take advantage of the educational benefits offered by the military. Having a chance to do something for my country is a draw as well, even if I'm just sitting in the back building bombs or fixing trucks or something.
>>
>>32176659
Well no matter what you do you'll get the GI bill which can pay for college after you're done. But if you want to do some kind of maintenance work that'll help you learn a trade too, or give you an idea of what you want to do (or don't want to do). So you have plenty of options afterwards.
>>
>>32176870
thanks for the help, I'll do some more reading and maybe talk to a recruiter if I feel like it's a good move for me

I don't doubt that I'm capable, just if it's really the best thing to do with the rest of my early 20s, but that's a question only I can answer.
>>
>>32176995
Look at it this way, if you join now you'll come out with a fair amount of cash and decent career opportunities by the time you're 26. Compare that of doing 4 years of what you're doing right now and decide if you think it'll be better or worse.

You'll be signing away a few years of your life though, that's why it's important that you find something that you could be ok with doing for 4 years without killing yourself.

>leaves out that if you're staying in a rich country BAH and COLA adjust to that and the base exchange is cheap as fuck and carries the essential goods

It's like googling base salaries doesn't tell the full story of what military jobs actually pay.

Officers do not enlist.

Aside from that, if job skills are what you want you should pick another branch. Memerines are pretty up-front about the fact that they want people who value the title above all else.

An active duty enlistment or deployment.

Private military contracting isn't all WPS guys working for State. A lot of private contracting gigs are Supply, IT, Admin, Intel, maintenance etc.

If theirs no paper trail (or images) then keep your mouth shut. Even if they want to track down some random druggie from your past it's not enough proof that you actually did anything. Only that you happened to be at the same parties.

So I'm 99% certain Im getting a 3D0X2 Cyber Systems Operations contract for the Air force. I'm told I would need to interview for it.

Oh, is that why infantry SNCOs always end up switching jobs later on when they get broke off?

Infantry is the mistake you make when you're a teenager. It isn't a career.

>It isn't a career.
Why?

Yeah it is.

I know 2 people that were in 24 years They loved it. Obviously its not for everyone but its not a bad choice

Neither is the enlisted corps. There is a reason every retired SNCO has to mention the fact that he was military, while every retired officer simply moves on and does other shit.

What kind of people is it for? I don't get this "infantry is nothing at all like the other MOS" meme

Army lets enlisted pilot drones. Air Force is really the only ones with weird issues when it comes to certain jobs. They're worried that if people realize that having a college degree isn't magic, they'll get their huge fucking officer bloat cut down. The Air Force keeps officers in a lot of jobs that other branches would use enlisted for, just to justify having a bunch of officers.

It isnt a career past e6 because you will basically be doing office work. So in effect your infantry career stops and you become an office bitch.

If you are stupid enough to stay in the military as combat arms enlisted for that long you need to be going to an SF unit or something because otherwise you're just wasting your time.

>>32193016

I dont know if you're the same cocksucker that rails on and on about how great officers are but unless you are doing something relevant to the degree you got or made some friends in the military you are gonna have just as hard of a time finding a job.

So I'm currently studying up to be a 153A (Army helicopter pilot, warrant officer) and I'm just wondering, how hard is piloting an aircraft if you've never done it before? Also considering enlisting. How good/bad is E-1 pay?

Guys I chose a job at meps that requires a TS clearance. I'm slightly worried about it because when I was 12 I saw a therapist/counselor, and I got prescribed anxiety meds because I was an edgy teen. Off topic question here lads, normally browse /v/, /tv/, and /pol/ but noticed the new vegas general and decided I'd ask here. Me and my sister recently inherited a couple of guns from my grandpa and I've been trying to find the legalities regarding inheritance gun laws either federal or for my State, California.

From what I've been able to find from google I've come across a lot of outdated links that 404 or just go to the homepage of whatever site they linked me to.

I'm trying to find out if I need to do an intra-family registration of the newly inherited guns, if they're even legal to have in my possession, if I need to unload every gun due to loaded(?) gun laws in CA.

Guns came from NV

>>
>>32201630
Keep your fucking mouth shut and don't tell anyone about those guns. If you bring them into California and register them it's highly likely they'll be confiscated if you registered.
>>
>>32198122
>Anybody ever been stationed overseas?
Of course. Is there a point to your question?
>>
>>32200850
Most of the idiots I work with are just too fucking stupid for academics.
>>
>>32201793
I don't think that sounds very legal butttttt from what I'm reading it's legal to own an unregistered handgun so long as I don't ever transport it in a concealed manner, which I would never do. I'll look more into the IFF registration but if I seriously have to go to a dealer and get a "gun safety certificate" i'm gunna be peeved. Fucking California
>>
>>32201630
Don't ask this in /meg/, this would merit a post of its own
>>

>>
>>32201886
ya but I want to shitpost about legally acquired guns without being scared of the FBI lurking the threads to v& me
>>
>>32201926
How you go about this legally depends on a lot of factors.
Option 1: leave the guns in NV, and go there whenever you want to shoot your guns.
Pros: No registration
Cons: you have to drive hundreds of miles to shoot
Option 2: register the guns that aren't illegal in california (most of the fun, modern guns are illegal in california. too bad, try moving)
Option 3: get a lawyer
>>
>>32201958
>option 2
The guns are 10+ years old, one of them is from muh great grandpappy. I think i'll just have to do the $19.00 DOJ IFF 30- day registration thing. The problem I'm running into is finding information regarding gun laws for guns that weren't bought. For example you have to have a state approved gun safe when you want to buy a new gun but since I'm not buying guns and no minors are ever near my house I don't need one.

I'm still trying to find all the legalities tbqh
>>
>>32202007
What kind of guns are they? 10+ years old is still in the range for b& shit.
>>
>>32202079
There's a hispana(?) colt .45, .357 magnum pretty new'ish, a 9mm pretty small beretta, I'd def say it's from 1995+. And a .308 Rifle from 1990+. I called my mom and apparently the couple of .22 rifles/.12 gauge's are registered here in CA under my great grandpappy's name so those are legal to shitpost about.
>>
>>32202178
for the handguns, you'll need to check with your local gunstore or ask calguns.net. As for the .308, if it's a bolt action, you're good. If it's semiauto, there's a flowchart that will tell you if you're boned or not.
>>
>>32202261
the .308's bolt action so that's good but the handguns I've been trying to look around to see if they're legal here or not. If they are i'll do the IFF form and register them, if not they'll probably get sent back to Nevada and keep them at my grandmother or uncle's house. There's a 30 day window so I still got time to find everything out. They kind of just got dropped off at the house out of the blue
>>
>>32202305
http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

One loophole is if you move to california from another state with those arms, you're golden so long as the mags are 10 rounds or less each.
